Golden Hour
Golden Hour | Beatriz Williams
The New York Times bestselling author of The Summer Wives and A Certain Age creates a dazzling epic of World War II-era Nassau--a hotbed of spies, traitors, and the most infamous couple of the age, the Duke and Duchess of Windsor. The Bahamas, 1941. Newly-widowed Leonora "Lulu" Randolph arrives in Nassau to investigate the Governor and his wife for a New York society magazine. After all, American readers have an insatiable appetite for news of the Duke and Duchess of Windsor, that glamorous couple whose love affair nearly brought the British monarchy to its knees five years earlier. What more intriguing backdrop for their romance than a wartime Caribbean paradise, a colonial playground for kingpins of ill-gotten empires?Or so Lulu imagines. But as she infiltrates the Duke and Duchess's social circle, and the powerful cabal that controls the islands' political and financial affairs, she uncovers evidence that beneath the glister of Wallis and Edward's marriage lies an ugly--and even treasonous--reality. In fact, Windsor-era Nassau seethes with spies, financial swindles, and racial tension, and in the middle of it all stands Benedict Thorpe: a scientist of tremendous charm and murky national loyalties. Inevitably, the willful and wounded Lulu falls in love. Then Nassau's wealthiest man is murdered in one of the most notorious cases of the century, and the resulting coverup reeks of royal privilege. Benedict Thorpe disappears without a trace, and Lulu embarks on a journey to London and beyond to unpick Thorpe's complicated family history: a fateful love affair, a wartime tragedy, and a mother from whom all joy is stolen. The stories of two unforgettable women thread together in this extraordinary epic of espionage, sacrifice, human love, and human courage, set against a shocking true crime . . . and the rise and fall of a legendary royal couple.

Picking up books for the entire family - top one for my son who will be starting middle school in Sept, middle 2 for me because they are favorite authors, and the bottom for my husband who just watched Dublin Murders on TV and wants to read the books (I may actually reread if I find the time)

A lot of people really liked this book but I was disappointed. There were times I was really struggling to find it interesting. I got about half way through then I just couldn‘t do it anymore. It dragged on and just didn‘t hold my interest. I might go back to it in the future if I have nothing better to read to try and get a better take on it. #botm

All of these for $3? Yes please! I haven't read #petsematary since it first came out, so it's time for a re-read to see how it holds up. The poetry is for #homeschool and the others are because I canceled my #BoTM membership earlier this year, so I've missed a lot of their picks. Thank you to whoever dropped them off at my library's book sale! Their loss is my gain! 😉💗

It saddens me to say this, when I have loved so many of her others, but this book sucks 😔

After 150 pages I still have no idea what's going on or why

Beautiful cover though

Crazeedi I'm so glad someone else dnf, I read about as much as you did and thought maybe I'm missing something, could not get into it at all, and like you I've like her other works 5mo
C.Perone @Crazeedi Usually you know her characters off the bat, and have a sense of story immediately; but here, I felt like I was reading a first, unfleshed draft 5mo
Crazeedi @C.Perone yes you've hit the nail on the head, I couldn't figure out why I wasn't immersed in the story , but that is exactly what the beginning was like. Maybe it became cohesive later, but I just put it down 5mo

A perfect Summer read! Quintessential Williams with dual storylines and timelines that come together at the end. This novel follows Lulu, an American journalist in the Bahamas who becomes entangled in the affairs of the Duke and Duchess of Windsor during WWII.

From the opening chapter, Beatriz Williams captivates her reader. This sweeping novel is beautifully written with an element of mystery and intrigue. 4.5 ☆ My third and favorite so far of Beatriz Williams!! I loved the WWl/WWll historical settings & was fascinated w/the Duke and Duchess of Windsor‘s over the top lifestyle. With two likable main characters that alternated between Elfriede during the turn of the 19th century + Lulu in the 1940‘s w/spies, marriage + murder I was completely engaged from start to finish. I enjoyed the intriguing dual storylines and wasn‘t quite ready for it to end.

I love how Williams wove together two love stories from different generations. I knew somehow they would connect during the timehop, but I was unprepared for a few of the twists thrust upon me. I wept, I held my breath, I laughed and I loved throughout these pages. LuLu is a protagonist I think anyone can identify with and Elfriede is such a genuine character one cannot help but feel for.
This is a must read!!

This is between a pick and so-so for me. I liked the two female protagonists, but wasn‘t too invested in their relationships which are the core of the book. A lot of the middle felt plodding and the sex scenes were repetitive and boring. Ultimately I felt like BW was trying to do too much with the two intersecting storylines (which worked) PLUS all the historical tidbits. I didn‘t like it nearly as much as The Summer Wives. #BotM #catsoflitsy

This is another of my #BOTM picks for June, and once again BOTM has totally delivered. I have loved every pick this year. I‘m so happy. This book wonderfully jumps between different characters, places, and eras. It‘s a method that Williams does so well. The settings and people are glamorous and still relatable. I don‘t normally enjoy romance, but when Williams writes it, I do.

I enjoyed this book for the most part & always like Williams' writing style, but there are a couple of things about her books in general that are getting tiresome for me. The alternating timeline trend is getting really old & gimmicky for me. Also too much "I love you so I have to have your babies!" in her books especially in this one where it was dangerous & life-threatening for the character to have babies. Also some loose ends not tied up.

Crazeedi I'm looking forward to reading, but I get tired of same old same old writing from an author, that's too bad 8mo
Amie @Crazeedi sometimes I like it because then I know what to expect from that author and if that's what I'm in the mood for I know to pick up their book. I think I need to recalibrate my expectations of this author and accept that I'm not going to love all her books like I used to. I'm sure there are readers who love the things that I disliked about this book. 8mo
Crazeedi @amie well I really enjoyed the first 3 I read of hers, but the last one (cant remember name)left me a bit disappointed 8mo
