One More Thing
One More Thing: Stories and Other Stories | B.J. Novak
B.J. Novak's One More Thing: Stories and Other Stories is an endlessly entertaining, surprisingly sensitive, and startlingly original debut that signals the arrival of a brilliant new voice in American fiction.A boy wins a $100,000 prize in a box of Frosted Flakesonly to discover that claiming the winnings might unravel his family. A woman sets out to seduce motivational speaker Tony Robbinsturning for help to the famed motivator himself. A new arrival in Heaven, overwhelmed with options, procrastinates over a long-ago promise to visit his grandmother. We meet Sophia, the first artificially intelligent being capable of love, who falls for a man who might not be ready for it himself; a vengeance-minded hare, obsessed with scoring a rematch against the tortoise who ruined his life; and post-college friends who try to figure out how to host an intervention in the era of Facebook. Along the way, we learn why wearing a red T-shirt every day is the key to finding love, how February got its name, and why the stock market is sometimes just . . . down. Finding inspiration in questions from the nature of perfection to the icing on carrot cake, One More Thing has at its heart the most human of phenomena: love, fear, hope, ambition, and the inner stirring for the one elusive element just that might make a person complete. Across a dazzling range of subjects, themes, tones, and narrative voices, the many pieces in this collection are like nothing else, but they have one thing in common: they share the playful humor, deep heart, sharp eye, inquisitive mind, and altogether electrifying spirit of a writer with a fierce devotion to the entertainment of the reader. From the Hardcover edition.

I've had this on my TBR for ages, but was never really all that interested in reading it (I'm not a short story fan). I finally read it out of desperation (empty Overdrive pipeline), and I'm glad I did. Some of the stories were pretty funny. Others not so much. But, I'm glad to get out of my comfort zone occasionally.

This is slightly more than a "so-so", but not quite a pick. I wanted to like this more than I did. Sarcastic, sardonic humor is funny in small doses. This was just too much of the same kind of thing for me. I did find myself chuckling but it was very hit or miss.

I really enjoyed the majority of this book. There were some rambly stories that felt unpolished or not quite finished but they were worth it for the real gems in here like The Something by John Grisham, The Rematch Between The Tortoise and The Hare, and Wikipedia Brown. Some short, others longer; irreverent and witty humor throughout. Reminiscent of The Office's writing, this dry take into today's social network world was delightful.

These short stories are clever and had me laughing aloud. I typically don‘t go for short stories, but these were refreshingly different. The book is definitely YA, not for young teens & has a preponderance of f-bombs. I‘m glad I‘m reading it before my 15-year-old daughter; but maybe tempting her with a funny book with mature-ish content will get her to actually READ. #YAWednesday

Covered in doggos, attempting to read. Not entirely sure why I need a pibble on my lap.
#dogsoflitsy

Jabberwocky Is Pibble the kitty‘s name? 2y
DGRachel If “Pibble” is short for pit bull (that‘s what I call mine, by the way), laps are where they belong, at least that‘s what Bailey tells me when she‘s sitting on my legs with all 60 lbs of muscle and fur, licking my face. 😂😂 2y
Aimeesue @Jabberwocky Yes, @DGRachel is right, pibble = pit bull. They‘re great dogs, but rather… pushy at times. Also, they will absolutely cover you with pibble spit. They‘re the kissiest dogs on earth. 😋 2y

Finally have this up next for an #audioread. I love The Office. Ryan Howard was a dick (to quote Ben Stovington from Felicity), but I'm fascinated by the relationship between Novak & Mindy Kaling.

raelaschoenherr Me too! Her books that talked about him were interesting. I should listen to this one too! 3y
lynneamch @raelaschoenherr I still need to read her's, but just finished Rainn's where he talks a bit about them, too. Plus, lots of other good stuff about The Office, his Baha'i faith, lots more. 3y
dariazeoli @lynneamch @raelaschoenherr Yes! I read Rainn's book a couple years ago and it's great! I liked Mindy's, too. Where do we petition for Jenna Fischer & John Krasinski to write books? 3y

Most promising read out of today's #libraryhaul I told another librarian about Litsy. She said she would check it out. I hope she does!! 😻😻❤️❤️📚📚Here's Taz and Ozzie just chillin on my bed #catsoflitsy #petsoflitsy

Viji Aw, I wish my kitties loved each other! The younger one hides behind things waiting for a chance to pounce on the old one 😧 3y
Mimi28 @Viji I have 5 cats, the 2 pictured are brothers. My youngest cat Mogwai who is 9 but still-- goes after my 17 year old cat a lot. In the morning I just lock Mogwai in my room alone so I can get some sleep after 6:30am. They ALL go crazy if I don't feed them by 5:30am, lol 3y
Viji Cats are definitely very habitual. I work 3 twelve hour shifts a week and on those days I get up and feed cats at 5:00. They don't understand why I don't want to get up early on my days off 😏. 3y

It's so good! I was expecting more of an essay style approach, which this is decidedly not. One of the most bizarre short story collections I have read. It's funny, and absurd. The amount of weird that he stuffs into these stories, many are so short, they shouldn't stick with you like they do, but I will be thinking about this for a while. 5 stars! 10 stars! Stars!

This was an odd experience. I went into this book expecting something different. A light Mindy Kaling-esqe memoir. I was confused by the first few stories and found the style off-putting. Then I started to get it. I am going out on a limb and saying that one day, BJ Novak is going to be one of the great short story writers. There were a few in here that were okay, and some that came off too glib, but there were a handful that were brilliant.

Krisjericho This book isn't laugh out loud funny. It is dark and subtle and finds the sadness in humor and the humor in sadness. 3y

I finished listening to this on my commute home last night and am so happy I did. The funny and sometimes thought provoking stories were a great antidote to news about the debate. I know I would have enjoyed reading this, but cannot help but think the experience was enhanced by the narration from B.J. Novak, Rainn Wilson, Mindy Kaling, and others. I definitely have some favorites, but I enjoyed every story in this collection.
