Wise Man's Fear
Wise Man's Fear | Pat Rothfuss
Picking up the tale of Kvothe Kingkiller once again, we follow him into exile, into political intrigue, courtship, adventure, love and magic - and further along the path that has turned Kvothe, the mightiest magician of his age, a legend in his own time, into Kote, the unassuming pub landlord.

Book two. I really enjoy the story. Patrick Rothfuss writes really well. The story differs in location and cultures. I would love to hear theories of who the mysterious patron is for Denna.

Patrick Rothfuss is one of a very few writers imho that can release a book that is this massive yet not leave me feeling like the editor didn't don their job taking out excess. I am engrossed in Kvothe's world every moment I'm in it. Kvothe has become one of my favorite characters, taking a place among characters like FitzChilvary in Robin Hobb's, (another master of massive books done well), Farseer series.

Waiting for the next one...

It‘s done and I‘m feeling enthusiastically empty... What a brilliant world Mr. Rothfuss has constructed. It‘s made to be reread and reread again. Everything I‘ve said previously for the Name of the Wind can be said for its successor. As much as I want the third book in the series released...I am more than willing to wait because you can only read a book for the first time once.

Here is just a few of the books I have read that are over 500K pages. All read within the last 18 months. Big books don't scare me off. Not even over 1K in length.

Alwaysbeenaloverofbooks That‘s awesome 👏🏻☺️📚 1mo

Crazeedi I actually stay away from any under 300 unless it's a recommendation or such. But I dont even really look at skinny books. Maybe that's why I dont read 200 plus books a year, lol 1mo
TheSpineView @Crazeedi I would never make 200 a year. More like 100. 1mo
Crazeedi @TheSpineView me neither, I'm trying for 160 1mo
TheSpineView @Crazeedi I can't even make 125. Work, grand kids and life see that I dont. Maybe if I was retired... when that happens?😋 1mo
jb72 I don‘t let page count (big or small) influence my reading. I try to incorporate all lengths, but don‘t worry too much about it. I would like to read 30,000 pages next year so I may focus more on that. 1mo
TheSpineView @jb72 That's a good idea! I started using Bookly this spring to track my reading. Already at > 20K and that is not a full year. It will be interesting to see my total next year. 1mo
Crazeedi @TheSpineView yes definitely when one retires, as I am!! 1mo
Crazeedi @jb72 I guess I just like a book that has a story line or a historical context that needs pages to develop! 1mo
Crazeedi @jb72 @TheSpineView there are several mystery series that I love that arent big long books too 1mo
jb72 @Crazeedi Personally I love long involved books. The Historian was a favorite of mine along with It. So much story and many characters. I‘m usually sad when they end. 1mo

I enjoyed this second installment in the Kingkiller Chronicle. Lots of great characters and tales. I guess I have a long wait in store for the final installment.

Pedrocamacho Honestly, though, a lot happened in the 1000 pages of this book. However, very few of the hanging threads were resolved, which was surprising given its length. 2mo

I‘ll be honest, I didn‘t like this one as much as The Name of the Wind. I realize that wandering is a common trope in epic fantasy, but I was just bored with all of Kvothe‘s travels in this book. While I was glad that the story expanded beyond the university, some of these interludes lasted wayyyyy too long to keep my interest. Throughout my listening, I found myself zoning out and having to rewind to make sure I didn‘t miss anything important👇🏼

Kimberlone I am still giving this a pick as I am sure things will fit together better once the third book is released 3mo

Well this one‘s going back. I don‘t know why I can‘t stand to listen to high fantasy read in an American accent. No offense to the narrator because he‘s doing a fine job. It‘s not you, it‘s me....😕.

Edit: I returned to it and I‘ve become accustomed to the young American narrator. 👍🏻

This is a very good fantasy novel. However, it‘s been 6 years or so and still no third book.

I'm going on vacation next week and trying to plan what books to take. What do you take to read on vacation?

Hardcover? Paperbacks? E-books?

What genre? Action/adventure? Mystery? Beach read? Contemporary/romance?

Shorter stories? Chunksters?

Something I've started? Something new?

Buy something when I get there? (It's a road-trip, no planes, if that helps)

HELP!

monogamist_reader That's a tough question. I would say ebooks... So you have more space in your luggage for paperbacks 🙈 6mo
charl08 If it's a car, I'm taking as many as fit. You never know what you'll feel like reading... 6mo
shadowspeak17 I would say ebooks for easier transport and I‘d pick books that either don‘t require a lot of concentration and/or are easy to get absorbed in because, for me at least, I have trouble concentrating on reading during trips. 6mo

GypsyKat I would definitely bring the book I‘m reading. Then whatever genre I think I might be in the mood for. Ebooks and paperbacks travel nicely. 6mo

This is one #unpopularopinion I truly did not expect to have. 🙁 I really enjoyed TNotW, so when I started this, I was fully convinced I would like it, but I didn‘t really. There were parts that I genuinely enjoyed, but then there was just so much that I didn‘t. I mostly liked the first part, but then it started to drag and things just went downhill. I can‘t really go into much else without spoilers, but I will say, Kvothe started getting ⬇️

shadowspeak17 on my nerves, and I definitely agree with the reviewers who have described this book as too “side questy.” I‘m still down to give the third book a chance whenever it comes out, but this one was a disappointment.

Palimpsest I read The Name of the Wind three years ago and then immediately started reading Wise Man‘s Fear. I got about 500 pages in and I wasn‘t sure if I didn‘t like it as much as the first book or I was just currently burned out on that world. I keep meaning to finish it, but I keep choosing other books to read instead. I did love the slow regard of silent things. 8mo

shadowspeak17 @Palimpsest I could definitely see getting burned out on the world. I love Auri, so I do still want to get to that. ❤️ 8mo
shadowspeak17 @Cinfhen It really is a bummer. 😩 I didn‘t want to bail though since I liked the first book and this one could just be suffering from middle book syndrome, so maybe the third will be better (I say hopefully 😬🤞🏽). 8mo
Palimpsest @shadowspeak The Slow regard of Silent Things is very different. Even the intro by Rothfuss says people either like it or they don‘t.
