Exhalation
Exhalation: Stories | Ted Chiang
From an award-winning science fiction writer (whose short story "The Story of Your Life" was the basis for the Academy Award-nominated movie Arrival), the long-awaited new collection of stunningly original, humane, and already celebrated short stories This much-anticipated second collection of stories is signature Ted Chiang, full of revelatory ideas and deeply sympathetic characters. In "The Merchant and the Alchemist's Gate," a portal through time forces a fabric seller in ancient Baghdad to grapple with past mistakes and the temptation of second chances. In the epistolary "Exhalation," an alien scientist makes a shocking discovery with ramifications not just for his own people, but for all of reality. And in "The Lifecycle of Software Objects," a woman cares for an artificial intelligence over twenty years, elevating a faddish digital pet into what might be a true living being. Also included are two brand-new stories: "Omphalos" and "Anxiety Is the Dizziness of Freedom." In this fantastical and elegant collection, Ted Chiang wrestles with the oldest questions on earth--What is the nature of the universe? What does it mean to be human?--and ones that no one else has even imagined. And, each in its own way, the stories prove that complex and thoughtful science fiction can rise to new heights of beauty, meaning, and compassion.

‪I don‘t know what to say about this except that I think Ted Chiang is one of the greatest living writers of short speculative fiction. I mean, I‘ve been thinking about “The Truth of Fact, The Truth of Feeling” for literal years now, and yet I still find it just as breathtaking reading it again as part of this collection. Great book.

Bailedbailed

I‘m currently on a bail spree. For some reason, not much is holding my attention these days (I‘m in a bit of a stressful period, so it‘s probably more about me than the books themselves). And while I adored Chiang‘s last collection of stories, these didn‘t keep me engaged.

SW-T Sometimes that happens. Hopefully things settle down for you and the right book finds you at the right time😊 4d

Absolutely fabulous collection of stories! Some of them have been published elsewhere, but a few more of them are new to this collection. I honestly enjoyed each one.

Sci-fi short story collections are not always my jam, but Ted Chiang might be the author to change my mind. The creativity and diversity of subject in this collection made it a delight to read. Standouts for me include; The Merchant and the Alchemist's Gate; Anxiety is the Dizziness of Freedom; and Omphalos. In fairness, though, I can't think of a miss in the bunch. Very highly recommended. ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐

⭐️⭐️⭐️1/2
I enjoyed the thought-provoking nature of these stories, and while all of the stories were solid and I liked most of them, it was hard not to compare this collection to Chiang‘s previous one which I enjoyed a lot more.

Mehso-so

I‘ve been listening to this book on Libby for the past few days and I‘ve only got about an hour left. I mean the book is interesting and everything but I felt like it could have been pushed farther. It has a black mirror feeling but it doesn‘t disturb me enough- like it‘s ever so slightly in the twilight zone. The only other thing of complaint is that the narrators all sound like robots for some reason? I don‘t know (it might just be me).

This is one of those books you read that opens up your perspective up a bit. To the point where you wonder how you were living without considering these ideas at all before. Each short story addressed an aspect of humanity - language, memory, morals, time, etc. And each was interesting, eye-opening and extremely thought provoking. Highly recommend.

1. Exhalation by Ted Chiang
2. I‘d like to finish Exhalation and start either Limit or American Gods. I haven‘t decided which yet. 🤔
3. Exhalation... I‘m only 1/3 through, but it already seems right up my friend‘s alley, so I told him he should read it. 😂

Love it. Book of the year for me (so far).
Most of all:
- Exhalation (air-driven mechanical scientist looks into his mind. Literally).
- What's expected of us (Do we have a free will?)
- The truth of fact, the truth of feeling (digital memory vs organic memory)
- Omphalos (life in a world literally created by god, but why?)
- Anxiety is the dizziness of freedom (do you want to chat with your parallel self? )

Brilliant!

As some sort of bizarre coping mechanism, during the last couple weeks of classes I somehow brought home 30 LIBRARY BOOKS. Here are the ones that aren‘t picture books or currently on my mother‘s desk. (She wanted to read it. What can I say? I‘m an enabler.) Now that I‘m done with the semester I can actually maybe read some of them! But where to begin?

dragondrool I would be starting with the Kiernan. 2mo

Ted Chiang continues his focus on connection, free will, and emergent technologies in this practically perfect collection. Superb speculative fiction but absolutely works for readers outside the genre as well. The Lifecycle of Software Objects alone is worth the cover price on this one. And I love Chiang's story notes (present in Stories of Your Life as well); does anyone know any other authors that do this?

Thank you so much again, @TheSpineView! I ended up getting these three books and preordering the tagged one. Her Body and Other Parties was one of my favorite books I read last year, and I‘d been wanting to add it to my personal library. The others I haven‘t read yet and I‘m really looking forward to them. 😄📚💕
