My final time for the #readathon ! Just over 9 hours.
I didn‘t get as many hours as I would have liked, but still pretty happy!
I‘ve been so busy with exams and projects. It was nice to have a bit of reading time to relax.
I finally finished The Institute and started The Testaments.

While I may have had the disappointing experience of needing to return a book I was reading to my university library, I am lucky to have also borrowed Margaret Atwood‘s sequel to The Handmaid‘s Tale!

I was a huge fan of the first book and the TV series, so I am very excited to see how Atwood develops the world and ideas in The Testaments!

Or if you‘re far enough along that I won‘t give away spoilers I can tell you what‘s on my mind about the novel! #BuddyRead 7d
Alora Oh wow 😂 Haha this is why I can‘t keep up in buddy reads. I‘m a slow reader and sometimes don‘t have a lot of time to read. I loved The Handmaid‘s Tale and the series. I started watching the series first, stopped at episode 3 and had to go buy the book lol 7d
Pruzy @Alora Yeah, read the book and watch the series, or skip the series and go straight to The Testaments! It is very good! 5d
Alora @Pruzy Im saving season 2 and 3 for after the book! 5d
Pruzy @Alora To be honest, The Testaments is so far after Season 2 and 3, it honestly makes more sense to read it after. I just don‘t want to recommend reading a book over a TV show 😆 5d

Alora OMG. I was starting to think this was telling the story of June?! On Pg 85 when Shunammite says that Agnes‘ mother tried to carry her across the border and she got caught. Is this June‘s child that was taken?! Loving it so far! 😱😱 4d
Pruzy @Alora You‘re pretty much 100% correct! Yeah, I‘ve got about 50 pages left, hopefully I can finish it this weekend 4d

Not for me. Easy enough to listen to, but I finished feeling I had read a bit of a thriller with limited substance, unlikely scenarios and gaping plot holes. I just didn‘t manage enough buy-in. Apologies to all the fans...

Tamra Yes, have to have buy-in! I think that is why I have difficulty really engaging with fantasy, dystopia, and sci fi, there are exceptions of course. My buy-in with the audio historical fiction I finished up today was not complete, so it hindered my enjoyment. Thanks for the food for thought! (edited) 2w
Graywacke @Tamra You‘re welcome. 🙂 I think about buy-in a lot - how taking in a book isn‘t just passive, you have to...well, me anyway...I have to figure out _how_ to read it. But...sometimes the book just has issues ☺️ 2w
CarolynM @Tamra I'm with you on those genres - I find it really hard to accept their fundamental premises. At a more general level, that issue of believability is the great unknown for me. Why do some books have it and some not? I know that sometimes it's my attitude, but sometimes it's the book itself. I've sometimes found some myself unconvinced by books I've wanted to love and other times completely captivated by books I've tried to resist. 2w
See All 14 Comments
batsy Nice review. I get the concept of a buy-in. Is it like the reader-writer contract of sorts... Some readers are on board with your fictional world and some will struggle. 2w
Graywacke @CarolynM @tamra - interesting that this conversation goes to the weaknesses of genre fiction. If we classify this book as a dystopian thriller, it changes some perspective about the book, and if we associate that genre with the expected problems of the genre, it also lessens it. I could have simply wrote: “decent dystopian thriller”, and I would considered that a brutal review. 🙂 (I thought about doing just that) 2w
Graywacke @batsy hmm Buy-in is a word I use for an unconscious thing we do as readers when we let our guard down, turn off the inner critic and just enjoy. No conscious contract. The author disarms us, and we trust them wherever they take us. It‘s the best way of reading, IMO, but it‘s something I always struggle to get to. (Every Cather, she has to disarm me, and every time she does. I don‘t know why. Shakespeare doesn‘t need to.) 👇👇 2w
Graywacke @batsy this goes into why I‘m a very bad book starter. I have to figure out how to read the book, and shut everything else off. Part of why I have been doing themes is to help myself mentally prep for books and overcome that a bit. (Here, in this book, of course, I never did) 2w
Graywacke @tamra @CarolynM @batsy - you all have me thinking in ways I didn‘t expect/intend. 🙂 2w
batsy @Graywacke Thank you for explaining! I get what you mean. I think I also tend to think of books that way. Most of my 5-star books are where I've completely bought in, so to speak. 4-star reads can be brilliant or even visionary books but maybe I haven't really been convinced all the way... This is so fascinating to think about. And I love hearing others talk about it, too, because it can be so subjective and personal. 2w
Graywacke @batsy so subjective, personal... and also moody. I‘m always fascinated by the various responses to specific books. 2w
Liz_M @Graywacke Fascinating discussion. My flip side is that I almost always fall into the world of the book and am incapable of thinking about it critically. It's why I struggle with writing reviews and joining discussions 1w
Graywacke @Liz_M it‘s a good problem 🙂 1w
Liz_M @Graywacke Grass is always greener 😝 I am envious of your critical analysis skills and fantastic, thought-provoking reviews. 🤓 1w
Graywacke @Liz_M 😍you‘re my hero for today. Ego uplifted 💪... 🙂 ☺️ (Of course, I love your reviews and admire your 1001 project. Feels a little inadequate to say that now...but it‘s still true. !!) 1w

Okay, so according to my kindle I am 36% of the way through Atwood‘s novel and I am on struggle street.

At the moment, I don‘t agree with this winning the Booker Prize. It took me ages to work out who the other characters were apart from Aunt Lydia and I don‘t like the way it‘s set out.

Anyone agree or disagree?

I finished this book on Sunday, and I am still not sure how to feel about it. I love that we got more information about Gilead and the changing POV was a treat, but then it stopped right at a point where it got very interesting? Also b/o it read sometimes more like non-Fiction/biographical the mystery was missing a bit. Her writing suffered a bit from that too.

But since then I've come across 3 other parties who have been just rude and belligerent messing my day up completely.. Incidents on separate days wouldn't bother me much less but I'm so in my feelings now. Sorry for the rant, Litsy has become my #safeplace

*Sigh* #UnpopularOpinion incoming...
I wish I hadn‘t read this. I hadn‘t expected it to be anywhere near as good as The Handmaid‘s Tale, but I had hoped for better than this. It just felt cheap, like it was written to cash in on fans of the show. Parts felt very YA (which is something I usually do not like and this was no exception), I found the plot twists painfully obvious, the ending underwhelming, even the writing felt ⬇️

shadowspeak17 lackluster. I ended up rolling my eyes and saying, “Seriously?” far too often... 😔 I really wanted to like this, but in the end I found it disappointing and unnecessary.

BarbaraTheBibliophage I agree with your assessment. But, hey, at least it checks off a prompt! 1mo
Come-read-with-me @shadowspeak17 Thanks for the honest review. It‘s hard to speak so frankly in a less than positive way about a book that many people are celebrating. Great observations on your part - this book is an acquired taste for many readers. 1mo

Cinfhen I applaud your review and had very similar feelings. I‘m glad I read it because I wanted to see if this book really could live up to the hype, which for me, it did not. I also felt this was a total sell out. But good for Margaret Atwood for at least writing her own ending. 1mo
shadowspeak17 @BarbaraTheBibliophage I‘m glad I‘m not alone in my opinion. 😅 Yes, just five more prompts to go! I think I might actually complete the challenge this year. 😬🤞🏽 1mo
shadowspeak17 @Come-read-with-me Thank you! I‘m really glad the people on Litsy tend to be kind when someone goes against the popular opinion on a book, otherwise I doubt I would have posted a review for this. 1mo
shadowspeak17 @Cinfhen That‘s part of the reason why I read it too, to see if it would live up to the hype. I honestly didn‘t really expect it to, so my expectations weren‘t actually that high going in. But of course I hoped to be pleasantly surprised. Yes, good for Atwood, and I‘m glad lots of people have enjoyed the ending she gave this story even though I don‘t happen to be one of them. 1mo
Cinfhen Same!!! Oh well!! 1mo
BarbaraTheBibliophage @Cinfhen @shadowspeak17 Am I the only one scratching my head about the Booker Prize for this book? 🤔 1mo
Cinfhen Not at all @BarbaraTheBibliophage it‘s not fair to Bernadine Evaristo who actually deserved to win!!!!!! 1mo
BarbaraTheBibliophage @Cinfhen I‘m anxious to read Evaristo‘s winning book. Sad she couldn‘t have all the glory. The judges bowed to book politics! 1mo
Cinfhen I think so @BarbaraTheBibliophage which is disappointing 1mo
shadowspeak17 @BarbaraTheBibliophage Definitely not. I don‘t get it either. I haven‘t read Evaristo‘s book, but the split prize feels like a total cop out that‘s not fair to either author. 😕 1mo

I‘ve seen some mixed opinions on this one, but I really enjoyed it. It‘s a solid sequel that shines a light on some of the darkness and mystery that The Handmaid‘s Tale left is with. Ultimately, it left me questioning what I would have done in the same situations and I never found my answer. So that‘s the sign of a good book to me.

It has been years since I read, The Handmaid's Tale, and I don't really watch TV so I read this more as a stand alone. I liked it quite a lot, I don't think it moved me as much as, Handmaid's Tale, it could be a difference with me. I was a new mom at the time and felt the story, if that makes sense 😋

Hugely hyped, wonderfully executed. This follow-up to The Handmaid‘s Tale is told from three points of view 15 years later. Aunt Lydia‘s and two other characters, whose pasts unfold as the story progresses. I loved the choices of which characters she highlights and felt the ending was completely satisfying. It took me a short time to get into it, but the audiobook is so well done that I found myself trying to find extra time to listen.

This is a very addictive book. But I must say it's not on the same level as The Handmaid's Tale. It doesn't have the same power, mystique or gravitas. This felt very new age and it was too neatly packaged. Nevertheless, I still really enjoyed it. Now I must re-read The Handmaid's Tale to bask in its greatness.

The Testaments is entertaining enough...if your after a book that reads like your standard YA dystopian novels. It unfortunately wasn't great.
I didn't like how Aunt Lydia was portrayed at all and how it's all wrapped up at the end...really had me rolling my eyes.
I'm left dissapointed after reading this.

LittleMummyMe And its like Nicole didn't even need to be in the book!
She's only in the book to let her conveniently befriend Agnes and be together as sisters at the end and find their mother together. 🤮

I mean, they get her into Gilead, just to get her back out of Gilead...🙄🙄🙄🙄

Agnes could have got out of Gilead with Becka.
