The Bird's Nest
The Bird's Nest | Shirley Jackson
25 posts | 8 read | 35 to read
Shirley Jackson's third novel, a chilling descent into multiple personalities Elizabeth is a demure twenty-three-year-old wiling her life away at a dull museum job, living with her neurotic aunt, and subsisting off her dead mothers inheritance. When Elizabeth begins to suffer terrible migraines and backaches, her aunt takes her to the doctor, then to a psychiatrist. But slowly, and with Jacksons characteristic chill, we learn that Elizabeth is not just one girlbut four separate, self-destructive personalities. The Birds Nest, Jacksons third novel, develops hallmarks of the horror masters most unsettling work: tormented heroines, riveting familial mysteries, and a disquieting vision inside the human mind. For more than seventy years, Penguin has been the leading publisher of classic literature in the English-speaking world. With more than 1,700 titles, Penguin Classics represents a global bookshelf of the best works throughout history and across genres and disciplines. Readers trust the series to provide authoritative texts enhanced by introductions and notes by distinguished scholars and contemporary authors, as well as up-to-date translations by award-winning translators. While visiting my parents in their new town in CA, I discovered that they hadn‘t yet found a little bookstore to call their own. Well, I obviously had to fix that! (Tagged book is one I picked up while there. Because obviously I needed more things to pack. #noregrets )

Sace That looks like a perfect bookstore. I love it. 4w

I got my #horrorgoespostal book from @ephemeralwaltz today. Looking forward to reading it. :) And thank you so much for the beautiful Bartleby tote bag, Clara. ❤️❤️❤️❤️

ephemeralwaltz You're so very welcome! I knew you'd like it 😍 I couldn't resist getting the same one for me. 10mo
CocoReads I haven‘t read that book in so long! Probably not since high school. Oddly enough, it was the only non religious book in my maternal grandma‘s house. Im pretty sure she never read it, I think it must have been left there by one of her kids-my birth Mom or possibly one of her siblings. 10mo

Pickpick

Missing Christmas already! This was my last read of 2018. I picked it up for my #horrorpost bookclub, excited to read more of Jackson's fiction. However, I don't think this works well as a horror novel but it still is dark and mysterious and intriguing. An in-depth exploration of mental health and human relationships surrounding a young woman with multiple personality disorder. As always, Jackson's writing is just superb!

⭐⭐⭐⭐

ephemeralwaltz @scripturient I'll send this out to you next week, once I've finished filling in the journal! 😘😘 11mo

Mehso-so

I despised all the characters, the character changes of the chapters seemed poorly thought out and the story overall seemed to try and blend the horror story always imposed on DID with the 'medical' ramblings of the psych. And I get it was 1950s but I dont really know why Jackson bothered with most of the doctor's chapter.

ephemeralwaltz Agreed! He made me roll my eyes. I "love" that he addressed the reader as "sir," as only men would be capable of studying his medical journals. 11mo
ephemeralwaltz Overall I enjoyed it! Jackson's writing is one to savour slowly. I was expecting more of an ending, though! 11mo

Shirley Jackson's powerful novel of control & identity features Elizabeth Richmond, a woman suffering from multiple personality disorder. She consults a psychiatrist, who begins manipulating her personalities in order to make one of her secondary & more appealing (according to him) personalities the dominant one. Identity integrity is the root of the fear #IAmaPoseur

Jackson's third novel addresses, among other subjects, the tenuous foundations of identity & gender expectations, with her signature creeping unease & black humor. Jackson improved with each publication & this is the finest of her first three books.
