Lost Roses | Martha Hall Kelly
The runaway bestseller Lilac Girls introduced the world to the real-life heroine Caroline Ferriday. Now, a generation earlier, this sweeping new novel featuring Caroline's mother, Eliza, follows three equally indomitable women from St. Petersburg to Paris under the shadow of World War I. It is 1914 and the world has been on the brink of war so many times, many New Yorkers treat the subject with only passing interest. Eliza Ferriday is thrilled to be traveling to St. Petersburg with Sofya Streshnayva, a cousin of the Romanovs. The two met years ago one summer in Paris and became close confidantes. Now Eliza embarks on the trip of a lifetime, home with Sofya to see the splendors of Russia: the church with the interior covered in jeweled mosaics, the Rembrandts at the Tsar's Winter Palace, the famous ballet. But when Austria declares war on Serbia and Russia's Imperial dynasty begins to fall, Eliza escapes back to America, while Sofya and her family flee to their estate outside the city. In need of domestic help, they hire the local fortuneteller's daughter, Varinka, unknowingly bringing intense danger into their home. On the other side of the Atlantic, Eliza is doing her part to help the White Russian families find safety as they escape the revolution. But when Sofya's letters suddenly stop coming she fears the worst for her best friend. From the turbulent streets of St. Petersburg and aristocratic estates of the countryside to the avenues of Paris and the society of fallen Russian migrs there to the mansions of Long Island, the lives of Eliza, Sofya, and Varinka will intersect in profound ways, taking readers on a breathtaking ride through a momentous time in history.

A prequel to Lilac Girls, this novel follows the stories of Eliza Ferriday - NY socialite (Caroline‘s mother from Lilac Girls), Sofya & Luba - sisters who are Russian aristocracy & dear friends of Eliza, and Varinka, a Russian peasant. War is coming. Sofya & Luba and their family are in danger. Varinka is looking for an escape. Eliza, does her best to help Russian families, but can she save the ones she loves the most? Unputdownable! ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️/5

Very much like when I read her book The Lilac Girls, I experienced a deep, challenging, visceral response while reading. At times It felt too much for me so I put the book down & listened to a cozy that asked nothing of me. In this novel the author writes almost a prequel to LG. Eliza Ferriday, mother to Caroline in LG, becomes involved in the rescue of her close friend, Sofya, cousin to the Tzar. The author‘s research is impeccable.🔽

kspenmoll 🔼 She visited Russia to get a feel the country, its land & its people. As a result her settings of both cities & countryside pre and post Revolution( 1912-1920) are remarkable in their details. Characters are authentic from all walks of life, & come alive. This book hurt but it also caused me to admire the resilience & courage of the characters.I t‘s historical fiction based on the real life Eliza Ferriday & her “WhiteRussian” aristocratic friends (edited) 2y
Ncostell Great review, I will have to check this out. I read Lilac Girls a few years ago and still think of it from time to time as some of those scenes really stuck with me. This author really brings history to life, highlighting important stories that should be remembered. 2y

We visited the gorgeous Rose Garden in Elizabeth Park Yesterday. 2.5 acres of the 102 acres are dedicated to about 15,000 rose bushes of 800 varieties. It‘s an immersive world of roses, where you can wander aimlessly, marvel in its beauty, and revel in its bounty of colors.
I plan to visit the Bellamy- Ferriday House, home of the family, the Ferriday‘s,who inspired the author to write 3 books historical fiction, based on this philanthropic family.

kspenmoll @Soubhiville It is quite the experience! First year since Covid that we went. It was established in 1894 when Charles Pond bequeathed the land to the city. The rose garden was created in 1904. In the 1970s Hartford could no longer afford its upkeep and the roses had languished for some time. A nonprofit was crested to save the roses so some staff but mostly volunteers have tende the garden 2y

I enjoyed the book but I read the last one first by mistake. It went back and forth between characters so you had to remember who was who. I am now starting on Lilac Girls to fill in the beginning. Great story based on events that happened many sad years ago. War is never easy and these woman were brave, scared, out of their comfort zones but forged on to make a better life for Russian Immigrants.

Lost Roses is about the unbreakable bonds of women's friendship. It is set a generation earlier than The Lilac Girls and also inspired by true events. It features Caroline's mother, Eliza, and follows three women (Eliza, Sofya and Varinka) from St. Petersburg to Paris under the shadow of World War I. Sofya Streshnayva is a cousin of the Romanovs. Kelly explores the fate of the next tier of the aristocracy and how they fared during the revolution.

EadieB Varinka is the local fortune-teller's daughter. She is a poor girl from the Russian countryside and brings danger into their household. If you enjoyed Lilac Girls and love historical fiction, you will enjoy this book. I am awaiting Kelly's next book from the time of the Civil War with Caroline's great-grandmother's story. A special thank-you to Jena, one of my other daughters, for gifting me this book. #LostRoses #MarthaHallKelly 3y

Not as good as LILAC GIRLS, but still gripping historical fiction set during a time period I know little about. Kelly writes so beautifully about the power of female friendships. However, the last third of the book didn‘t seem as strong - as though the author was rushing to tie up all the loose ends. ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ #netgalley

Came down to the wire, but I finished tonight to complete two lines for #bookspinbingo for August. Excited for September!

Tagged book was a bit slow to start, but did eventually pick up and I enjoyed it. I have never read about the Russian revolution so it was fascinating to learn more. The story follows three women and I found myself rooting for all of them, even as they found themselves on opposing sides of the revolution.

I struggled with this at first. It failed to grab me as the many characters were introduced and backstories explained. I almost gave up but then the narratives combined and I finally started to enjoy it. I have never given much thought to the plight of the Russian people during the revolution before but this totally opened my eyes to how it had been for all classes.

This is not a book I would have chosen for myself—I didn‘t find the idea of a book set during the Russian Revolution very appealing. But man, was I surprised! I couldn‘t put this one down. Martha Hall Kelly also wrote Lilac Girls, which I have also read. While I did like Lilac Girls, I really think Lost Roses was much better. And now I need more books set during the Russian Revolution. 😊

I liked the historical setting in this story and I was content with how the journeys resolved for the three main characters, But my journey in this book couldn‘t find a way out of so-so status. I found the dialogue corney, and the cliff-hanging pivots from one POV to another made me want to skip pages to stay with the current storyline.

I loved Lilac Girls and was excited to read a WWI novel by the same author. I enjoyed the story, particularly the parts in Russia, but the varying perspectives were awkwardly done. This was fine otherwise but not really memorable. The photo is from a recent sunset boat ride and felt it appropriate for an immigrant story. #aty2019

BarbaraBB Such a great picture! Don‘t know the book. 5y
Rachel_nyc @BarbaraBB Thanks! It was such a beautiful evening and sunset! I would recommend the author‘s book Lilac Girls which is a WWII novel about women in Ravensbruck concentration camp. I wonder if the author was pushed by her publisher, due to that book‘s success, to follow it up with this “prequel”? The books have very little in common other than a main character in this one is the mother of a main character in the other. 5y

Just as with Lilac Girls, i read 50 pages, or Part 1 in this case, and did not find myself compelled to continue. I am generally turned off by ultra-privileged characters in times of great poverty, and this book features at least one, maybe two (I‘m not sure about Sofya). The action in Russia had me interested, but the book‘s focus on Eliza was such a letdown.

I enjoyed the focus on the women's lives as they were affected throughout history by the unrest and the war. Showing how the situation was for those in Europe and abroad in America, gave a nice overall view of the circumstances at the time.
