Bride Test
Bride Test | Helen Hoang
From the critically acclaimed author of The Kiss Quotient comes a romantic novel about love that crosses international borders and all boundaries of the heart... Khai Diep has no feelings. Well, he feels irritation when people move his things or contentment when ledgers balance down to the penny, but not big, important emotions--like grief. And love. He thinks he's defective. His family knows better--that his autism means he just processes emotions differently. When he steadfastly avoids relationships, his mother takes matters into her own hands and returns to Vietnam to find him the perfect bride. As a mixed-race girl living in the slums of Ho Chi Minh City, Esme Tran has always felt out of place. When the opportunity arises to come to America and meet a potential husband, she can't turn it down, thinking this could be the break her family needs. Seducing Khai, however, doesn't go as planned. Esme's lessons in love seem to be working...but only on herself. She's hopelessly smitten with a man who's convinced he can never return her affection. With Esme's time in the United States dwindling, Khai is forced to understand he's been wrong all along. And there's more than one way to love.

Sweet story about Kai, a man with autism, and his mother‘s search for a romantic match for him. Esme agrees to come over from Vietnam to try and win Kai‘s heart. Story of self-discovery as Kai must confront his own ideas about his emotions. Steamy and cheesy (in the best rom-com way), it still takes on real issues of life with a disability, immigration, all told through the lens of a Vietnamese family in California.

For such a great story, this was a really quick read. I don‘t know how it‘s possible, but I think I love Khai and Esme (My) even more than I love Michael and Stella. This read wasn‘t as “lusty” as The Kiss Quotient, but I found it to be more lovey 💕. Ms. Hoang has really hit her stride with character development in this second book; two beautifully complex, strong characters are to brought to life with an equally beautiful and emotional story.

annahenke I love these two books! She's one of my fave new authors. 3d

LOVED this as an audiobook! If you liked The Kiss Quotient, definitely pick it up. So funny, heartwarming and endearing. The romance is alternately sexy, sweet and blundering as Khai and Esme navigate how they relate to each other given his autism and her cultural unfamiliarity and separation from everything she's ever known. Very excited for the next book following Khai's brother Quan, he was great in this one.

I liked the book, but it was not as riveting as "The Kiss Quotient ". A mother goes to Vietnam and finds a girl she thinks would be compatible with her autistic son. The story has many ups and downs and t but ey both have secrets. Recommend.

Encouraged by all the positive reviews I'd read, I picked this one on a whim from the library. Overall, I found the book just ok. Esme and Khai's love story was cute, but there were so many contrived plot devices. I became frustrated by the character's misunderstandings and miscommunications.

The Bride Test was a quick, easy and fun read. Definitely needed after tackling the Goldfinch. I enjoyed the interweaving between this book and Hoang‘s other novel, The Kiss Quotient. Her perspective as a Vietnamese American is refreshing and adds a lot of fun elements to a typically predictable and cliche genre. A great summer read!

Helen Hoang has got to be my favorite new author. Her first book The Kiss Quotient was a 5 ⭐ book for me and I would put The Bride Test as a 4 1/2 ⭐ read. I really liked this book and Khai is awesome. He thinks he can not love, but oh how wrong he is. I honestly can not wait until she comes out with Quan's story. I have a soft spot for these characters (my youngest daughter is autistic), but she creates these awesome characters you ❤

3.5 ⭐️ - The Bride Test is the second book in The Kiss Quotient series and also features an artistic main character. 💕

While this book has less sass than the first book (and can be read as a stand-alone), it is still a sweet romance - perfect for reading poolside this summer.

An Americanized Asian Drama. This is a light read and ideal for people who cannot commit to serious books for some reason. Mostly an Adult romance, the novel nevertheless has its own side of cuteness and uniqueness as a narrative. One big quality of this book is its characterisation. The author has done wonderfully well in portraying the characters physically and emotionally.

If you read a lot of romances, most protagonists are interchangeable from novel to novel, but in this contemporary romance, the family feels real and so do their hopes and heartaches.

Michael‘s (The Kiss Quotient) cousin, who is autistic, is set up w/a with a bride from Vietnam Nam...

Not as steamy as TKQ but still ❤️❤️❤️❤️

Unpopular opinion but I am bailing on this one. I gave it 120 pages but I‘m just not feeling this book😞 which is super sad because I loved the Kissing quotient. I don‘t like the premise or the characters so far and my TBR pile is to big to force myself to see if it gets better.

This romance novel was good timing for May during #apicelebrasian - the author note at the end explains that part of her inspiration for Esme comes from her mother's story as a Vietnamese refugee, and not knowing much about it because she worked all the time. The author also shares her own impulse to feature a white character but Esme demanded to be more central. Between a pick and soso for me because it was too unrealistic even for what it is.
⤵️

ReadingEnvy So this is a good example of what is happening in contemporary romance - one character with Autism (who has to teach his love interest how to touch him because he's very sensitive to light touches,) one character who is an immigrant (although the whole fairy godmother element is a bit far fetched to say the least), men teaching each other how to please a woman, etc. ⤵️
2w
ReadingEnvy .
This is in the same universe as The Kiss Quotient (those characters even show up at one point) but you don't need to have read it to understand this one.

⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ Hoang is so good at spinning every thread into something cohesive. Here she broaches sensitive familial issues, immigration, romance, autism, grief, feminism, etc. And it‘s funny, too. Yes, the premise of Khai‘s over-bearing, but well-meaning mom arranging a marriage is a bit cheesy, but it serves as the catalyst for a story that is at once touching, frustrating, and really damned cute. Be sure to read the Author‘s Note at the end. 💛

Helen Hoang's The Bride Test is a moving, gorgeous, steamy romance that more than lives up to her debut. Khai's mother travels to Vietnam to find him a bride. After testing several women who don't pass her test, she finds My, a humble single mother who is working as a cleaning lady to provide for her daughter. She agrees to go to America to win over Khai, in hopes of offering her daughter a better life. (continued in comments)

Unabridged Khai, who is autistic, is convinced that he is incapable of love and that he must protect others (and himself) from over attachment. As the they begin to know one another, Hoang develops a romance that begins with friendship. I loved this novel. Oh, and be sure to read Hoang's Author's Note. As in The Kiss Quotient, her revelations about the story behind the novel only made me love it more. 3w
