#HollyJollyReading Day 5: Fats‘ review: “another masterpiece that will remain a children‘s classic and a holiday favorite. I like how the story begins with a boy who was told by a friend that he would never hear the ringing bells of Santa‘s #sleigh because there was no Santa. The boy never believed his friend. The beauty of The Polar Express comes from the magic of believing and the power of childlike wonder.” Full review: https://wp.me/pDlzr-aMS

The Polar Express written and illustrated by Chris Van Allsburg is a Fiction Caldecott Medal winner. This is an amazing classic book absolutely perfect for the Christmas season! I would use this book as a LC.#ucflae3414f19

KevinKantola something that I would do is show the movie right after reading the book. This is a good resource that provides a venn diagram that compares the book and the movie.

KevinKantola The UDL strategy that I would use is 2.5 which is illustrate through multiple media by playing the movie. The ESOL strategy that I would use is using Venn diagrams to contrast and compare activities by comparing and contrasting the movie and book. 1mo
DrSpalding Many, many, many children will hear this story and hopefully see the movie! Comparing and contrasting the two versions is an excellent way to enhance comprehension. Great idea and well written. 2d

One of the most underrated holiday stories comes to life in this F book written and illustrated by Chris Van Allsburg. A young boy takes a magical train to the North Pole on Christmas Eve. He finds out that one of the children will be selected to receive the first gift of Christmas from Santa. Who will be picked? What will they get? Most importantly, do you still believe? This book won a Caldecott Medal for its fantastic illustrations.

Jgolub13 This book provides a great opportunity to use the culture of many students who celebrate Christmas. This is why I believe that ESOL strategy #24 Incorporate the culture and the language of second language learners in your curriculum is perfect. I also believe that UDL principle Activate or supply background knowledge (3.1) fits as well. This should activate background knowledge in many of the students. 1mo
Jgolub13 I love this lesson from scholastic. It assesses comprehension by having students “record a podcast“ to tell the story of The Polar Express to the generations after the students. That way they will believe forever, and the teacher can assess the student's comprehension. https://www.scholastic.com/teachers/lesson-plans/teaching-content/polar-express-... #ucflae3414 (edited) 1mo
DrSpalding Several of your peers have highlighted this book! It is perfect for this time of year and your resource is stellar. Podcasts assist in oral language development and are engaging tools to use in your classroom. 2w

The Polar Express is a holiday classic book written and illustrated by Chris Van Allsbury. This fantasy Caldecott winning book tells the story of a young boy who wakes up one night to the sound of a train outside his window. When he boards, he meets other kids, all awaiting a trip to the North Pole. When I was in 1st grade we did a Polar Express night at my school where we watched the movies in our pjs and drank hot chocolate. #UCFLAE3414F19

Mwinship I think this book would be a great RA during the holiday season. This scholastic lesson plan can be incorporated afterwards for a writing unit: https://www.scholastic.com/teachers/blog-posts/erin-klein/polar-express-and-chri...
The EL strategy 16 and the UDL guideline 5.2 about integrating writing activities and using multiple tools for construction and composition align with this book and lesson plan.
1mo
AlyssaB I love this book. Every year for Christmas the kids make their own box of a train and we Parade around the school for the little ones to see. 1mo
DrSpalding Most of us love this holiday classic and scholastic is an excellent choice. There are so many ways to use this book around this time of year. 2w

The Polar Express is an RF picture book written and illustrated by Chris Van Allsburg. This book would be best as a RA for grades K-3 during the holiday season. This book follows the journey of a young boy who doubts Santa is real. He boards the Polar Express and enjoys a magical journey throughout the North Pole. The Polar Express was awarded the Caldecott Medal. #UCFLAE3414F19

katiehamlin The UDL I would use for this book is 3.1. Activate or supply background knowledge is important for this book because you can incorporate the culture of many different holidays. Students can talk about the holidays they celebrate while discussing Christmas, which is represented in this book. 2mo
katiehamlin The EL strategy you could use is 4. Linking the lesson topic to students‘ prior knowledge is good for this because students can discuss their knowledge of Christmas and other holidays and traditions. Here is a link to a resource I would use for this that had a great lesson plan and activities. houghtonmifflinbooks.com/features/thepolarexpress/tg/polar.shtml 2mo
kradebaugh Love love this book. I agree that I think it would be a great book for RA with kindergarten through 3rd but I think you could also use it with 4th or 5th grade. Only because I think that they can relate to the main character. 2mo
DrSpalding While this is not realistic fiction, this fantasy story should be shared many times over the next few weeks. Going straight to the publisher website is a wise choice for amazing extension ideas that go along with this award-winning book. I believe this book can be read to any grade level kindergarten through adulthood! 8h

The Polar Express by Chris Van Allsburg and was the 1986 Caldecott award winner. This is one of those books that defines what it is to be a classic. One of my personal favorites and must read around the holiday times. Between the magical storyline line and the gorgeous illustrations you cannot help but fall in love with this story. I love the use of dark colors and how there is not that much white on the page to set the tone of night time.

The F picture book, The Polar Express, is a holiday classic - going from the perspective of a young boy holding on tightly to his lively spirit with the most special gift of all from the jolly man himself! Winning the Gold Caldecott Award, this book would make an excellent addition to a classroom library and could be told through an AS. #UCFLAE3414F19

TristanPool Link: https://www.scholastic.com/teachers/lesson-plans/teaching-content/polar-express-... is a great resource to use when planning out an author study and or a fun winter read aloud for students in the PreK-2 grades. 2mo
TristanPool UDL 5.2 use multiple tools for construction and comprehension with EL 8 use direction instruction is perfect with the Lesson Plan provided as the teacher is able to dive deep to ensure success among students as they step into the shoes of author and illustrator Chris Van Allsburg and retell his story in the form of words or video formats. 2mo
Tinks I love, love, love this movie. However, I have yet to have the pleasure in reading the book. My daughters and I make it a tradition to watch it every holiday and then some... I think you did a great job in your post. 2mo

The Polar Express written and illustrated by Chris Van Allsburg is a wonderful RF PB, Caldecott Medal winner, that could be used for S in an elementary classroom. A young boy embarks on an unforgettable train ride to the North Pole where he discovers new friendships and realizes that you should always believe. The Polar Express is an incredible book for children to read to learn about the real Christmas spirit and to always believe. #UCFLAE3414F19

Camrynm This wonderful PB could be perfect for storytelling in your K-2 classrooms. The polar express is one of my favorite book‘s to read during the holiday season! It was written and illustrated by Chris Van Allsburg, who won a Caldecott for this MF PB. The story is about a boy who does not believe in the spirit of Christmas, that is until he ends up on a train traveling to the North Pole. This book would be a great RA to do in the month of December. #ucflae3414f19

KristenScala UDL strategy 5.1 would be perfect to use for this book, after reading you could show students the movie. EL strategy 21 could be used for this book, record yourself with an audiotape during the RA so students can listen to it at their own pace for clarification.

Lrobertson I have always wanted to read this book to my students before Christmas break, and then watch the movie, showing students' books and movies are not always precisely the same.
