Misinterpretation | Ledia Xhoga

#BookerLonglist
In the beginning, I was hooked! Loved the commentary on interpreting and words, appreciated the immigrant experience and differences between the MC and her husband. But then towards the middle it was difficult for me to stay involved…was this purposeful? I lost interest instead of figuring out where Xhoga was taking us. And that ending..not sure I fully grasped that. But that cover is striking!

ChaoticMissAdventures I feel like this is the theme of this year's Booker, the beginning is great, the end not so much. 3d
BarbaraBB Looking forward to this one. 2d
squirrelbrain I agree, Chelsea, this one started so well but finished rather flat. And I agree with you too, Shawna @ChaoticMissAdventures , so many of the longlist books have the same issue. 🤷‍♀️ 2d

Universality: A Novel | Natasha Brown

I agree with those who‘ve compared this to Birnam Wood at the start with that long form essay. Then readers get the background story on how that piece came to be. A satire, I suppose, of the way media distorts and public opinion is sculpted. Also, a very “of the moment” read. I thought it was fine but worry I am missing something to make it worthy of such praise. Another from the #BookerLonglist that was fine, but not as great as I‘d hoped.

Jas16 I also felt that I was missing something that everyone else was seeing with this one. Nice review. 3d

I regret listening to the audio instead of reading the print because I think I‘d have enjoyed the read. Instead, my mind wandered with the scenes — past vs present? Who‘s speaking? That said, I did love the set up and setting. I came away disappointed though, as I just wasn‘t able to connect with the characters in this format.

BarbaraBB You‘re on a roll with the Booker longlist! I hope one of them will be really great! 2d
squirrelbrain I struggled with the audio too -I felt it would have been better in print. 2d

A Ukrainian woman seeking to find snails before they become extinct & two sisters participating in the bridal tourism industry meet up & become embroiled in a journey with 13 men they‘ve abducted & placed in their mobile van. In the middle of the story things change, the Russian invasion begins, and the author begins to speak of her ancestry and her feelings about the invasion. Then we return to the story already in progress. A five star read.

Ruthiella I think this is the longlist title I am most interested in. Sounds so weird in a good way. 4d
Suet624 @Ruthiella I really liked the humor as well as the weirdness. And I wish more people would read the parts about the war. (edited) 4d

Flesh: A Novel | David Szalay

#BookerLonglist #3

I really liked Szalay‘s other books but I can‘t make much of this one.
István doesn‘t live his life, it just happens to him. He doesn‘t make choices or decisions. He just says okay to everything that is decided for him. There‘s just one time he does takes action, and it changes the course of his life. Yet it doesn‘t have any real impact on him or on me as a reader. So. Not very impressed.

And can someone explain the title?

squirrelbrain I‘m sad you didn‘t like this more as you were looking forward to it…. I looked up why he‘d chosen the title and he said it was to do with the physicality of the book rather than the cerebral nature of some stories. 🤷‍♀️ 2d
Graywacke @squirrelbrain make sense. I see the title has highlighting the body‘s unconscious motivations - the sex drive especially, but also other things along those lines. 2d
BarbaraBB @squirrelbrain Makes sense indeed. The flesh seems to dominate his decisions, that‘s true @Graywacke 2d

I loved this epic, character driven chunkster. Louisa goes walking on a Japanese beach with her father one night. Sometime later Louisa is found, barely alive. Her father is never found.

We look back at their lives, and those of other peripheral characters, & also at the post-war history of Japan / Korea and China, a period of time I don‘t know much about and found fascinating.

At the top of my list, alongside Seascraper.

TheKidUpstairs Great review! I've got this one lined up next 👍😁 7d
BarbaraBB Sounds like a book for me too! 7d
JamieArc I just got Seascraper today! It was out for a little while after the Longlist was announced so I‘m glad to finally get it. 6d

Hooked_on_books I was originally going to avoid this one, as I HATED her last book. But this sounds completely different and also interesting to me. I have it on hold, so we‘ll see where I land on it! 5d

What a wild ride! It burrowed into my brain in the best ways, made me think, and then every once in a while dealt a fierce punch to the heart. This kind of mutli-genre novel can be a very tricky tightrope and requires special talent to manage, esp. when you bring in elements of metafiction and autofiction. Reva accomplishes an impressive feat, like Percival Everett says in his blurb “I like it when a book is smarter than me!“ cont

TheKidUpstairs ...and this was smarter than me in delightful, surprising, and thought provoking ways.

Beginning as a combination of climate fiction and a satire on the Ukrainian marriage tourism industry, it felt like Charlotte McConaghy meets Emily St John Mandel. Yeva is single mindedly obsessed with snails on the verge of extinction, travelling the country in her mobile lab desperately searching for endlings - the last of their species...cont'd in next

TheKidUpstairs ...taking dates with foreign men when she needs fast funds for her rescue operation. Nastia and Sol are trying to survive the disappearance of their mother, and have come to the marriage industry in an attempt to make sense of her absence. The three women hatch a plan, and then Russia invades Ukraine, and the author invades the narrative.

It is mind spinning, thought provoking, and very timely. A high pick for me from the Booker list!

I found the first half of the book really compelling and intriguing, with the mix of marriage-bureau and saving the snails. (sounds odd but kind-of works!)

I also liked the meta-fiction elements, where the author inserts her own thoughts on the Ukraine war into the storyline.

Later on, it all started to get a bit dis-jointed and I didn‘t think the author quite nailed the ending.

squirrelbrain It still deserves a place on the shortlist though for its sheer breadth and inventiveness. 1w
ChaoticMissAdventures So the Endling didn't Ending well? 🤣 1w
Hooked_on_books This was on my radar before the Booker list came out and its inclusion pushed me over the edge to get it. I‘m looking forward to it! And @ChaoticMissAdventures I was going to make a similar pun! 😂 1w

TheKidUpstairs Just finished this one today, will post my review soon. Short version: I loved it 😁👍 1w
TheKidUpstairs I really liked the slightly disjointed ending. It seemed to fit with “The Author“'s inability to make sense of art and war, and her increased need to find a way to save her grandfather, even if only on the page, knowing she would never be able to do it in reality. 1w
monalyisha Totally thought the pun was going to be that she didn‘t quite “(s)nail” the ending. 🐌😅 1w
BarbaraBB Curious about this one after reading @TheKidUpstairs review too. 1w
squirrelbrain @ChaoticMissAdventures @Hooked_on_books @monalyisha LOL - it was a bit *startling* in places too! 🤦‍♀️ 1w
squirrelbrain Holly - I had the ARC a few weeks before the longlist came out - I just hadn‘t had chance to read it. 1w
squirrelbrain I think you‘ll love it @BarbaraBB 1w
squirrelbrain I liked the grandfather part, @TheKidUpstairs - I felt that the introduction of Pasha and his storyline at the end, was either not enough depth or too much distraction. I know that doesn‘t make sense - it just felt a bit ‘tacked on‘ to me. 1w
monalyisha @squirrelbrain Love it. 🤩😅 1w
TheKidUpstairs @squirrelbrain yes, I agree that the Pasha as artist part was unnecessary. I think my brain just glossed over that because I loved the rest so much! 1w
TheKidUpstairs @monalyisha 🤣🤣🤣 1w

A truly lovely book about a boy who scrapes the sea for shrimp and then meets a man who promises him Hollywood. The setting and scenery are drawn out so well, Thomas Flett is quite a special boy and the ending is… wow. Do visit the website mentioned at the end of the book 🎶

BarbaraBB @Graywacke I hear mixed things about this year‘s longlist but this one is definitely worth reading! 1w
TheKidUpstairs I think it is! I think I'll have to put in an order from Blackwell's for this one. I'm being slightly more selective with my Booker reading this year, but everything I've picked up so far has been really good. 1w
ImperfectCJ I can't get this one here yet, but I did put another by Benjamin Wood on hold at the library 1w
ImperfectCJ @TheKidUpstairs Thanks for mentioning Blackwell's! I totally forgot about ordering from them! 1w
ChaoticMissAdventures I have been having a hard time getting ahold of this one in the States, going to see if I can nab an English copy next month when I am in Czech. 1w
BarbaraBB @ChaoticMissAdventures How cool you are going to Czech! If you can‘t find it over there, let me know. I‘ll send you my copy. It‘s your kind of book too 1w

Graywacke @BarbaraBB so far I‘m smitten with this year‘s list. Love the variety and the fun and literary play 1w
BarbaraBB @Graywacke that is good to know! I only read this one and Audition so far and both are at least memorable! 1w
Cathythoughts Great review! I‘m just starting it. 👍🏻 1w

Nothing about this book appealed to me: the blurb, the cover art, the manly-man feel. But then it began popping up on “best of the year so far” lists. Finally, after it made the #bookerlonglist I said fine, I‘ll give it a go. Was it low expectations that helped propel this into a surprise hit for me?! I careened through the life of Istvan, after meeting him at 14 engaging in lots of sex, then throughout his career and life. Tragic, mundane, fab.⬇️

Chelsea.Poole For this who‘ve read this one: did anyone notice the whole of Istvan‘s life was propelled/set in motion by his mother? (Engaging with the neighbor was her idea then of course he made his own choices, but then that spiraled into his crime, detention, military, moving, rescuing, security, upward mobility, affair, wife, family, tragedy, on & on). Mothers have such influence over our lives. That was my takeaway at least! 2w
CarolynM Great review. I wouldn‘t be interested in it either, if it weren‘t for the rave reviews. (edited) 2w
BarbaraBB Great review. I liked other books by him so I will pick this one up. 2w

squirrelbrain That‘s how I felt about this book too. And, yes, to the mother thing! 2w
Jas16 The Booker is the only thing that convinced me to give this one a try too. Still waiting on my library hold but your review makes me more hopeful. 2w
TheKidUpstairs Hmm...intriguing... If it gets shortlisted I'll give it a try. It doesn't hold any appeal to me, but knowing it worked for you after feeling the same makes me think I might be missing out on something! 1w
