Norwegian Wood
Norwegian Wood | Haruki Murakami
First American PublicationThis stunning and elegiac novel by the author of the internationally acclaimed Wind-Up Bird Chronicle has sold over 4 million copies in Japan and is now available to American audiences for the first time.It is sure to be a literary event.Toru, a quiet and preternaturally serious young college student in Tokyo, is devoted to Naoko, a beautiful and introspective young woman, but their mutual passion is marked by the tragic death of their best friend years before.Toru begins to adapt to campus life and the loneliness and isolation he faces there, but Naoko finds the pressures and responsibilities of life unbearable. As she retreats further into her own world, Toru finds himself reaching out to others and drawn to a fiercely independent and sexually liberated young woman.A poignant story of one college student's romantic coming-of-age, Norwegian Wood takes us to that distant place of a young man's first, hopeless, and heroic love.

This was my first Haruki Murakami novel, and I read it on a recommendation. It was very, but it was not a quick read and not for everyone.

Seems like it‘s gonna be a good one - just started chapter two, so still deciding what to make of it.

13North Did you like it? What was your experience? 2mo
FountainOfWords I would say it‘s a narrative about relationships the narrator has with the other characters, especially the female protagonists. This also versus an event which occurs early in the book. Whilst I enjoy any analysis of interpersonal relationships, I could see some people finding this tedious, although this is not something I experienced whilst reading. So liking it is very subjective, I would say. Also it has explicit sexual descriptions. (edited) 2mo
FountainOfWords If you think this is something you would like, I definitely recommend. 2mo

Exactly halfway into this book and still dont know how I feel about it. Any of you who has read it, drop in a comment about how you liked it😊

Once this was a “Pick” for me but even though I – especially towards the end – recognise why, the dragging middle part with too much post-teenage insecurities and introspectives, too few real communication and too much ”cool”, “male” behaviour is the reason I downgraded it.

Today, I therein notice different messages than years ago but have the same feeling of exaggerated characters and too few development.

Not easy to rate. Decide yourself.

Emilymdxn This was the first murakami I read and I loved it but then the more other books by him I read the more i got more and more weirded out by his thoughts on women, and while I keep reading them (not a great selection of novels in my library so I‘ll probably read his complete works cause I‘m cheap 🤷‍♀️) I find every time it gets a bit harder to enjoy it around his attitude to women 4mo
Buechersuechtling @Emilymdxn I agree. Personally, I felt the more Murakamis I read the more weird and obsessed his protagonists become throughout each novel. Which is sad because at first I always like his guys – but then everything constantly gets more and more surreal and women more and more become embellishment and/or vehicle for (self-)awareness with the help of sex. Not very contemporary or modern, no … 4mo

Seems I have forgotten about all the “eroticism“ and sex in there since I read it over a decade ago. 🙄 That corporeality is boring and needless – even if it‘s not too explicit, I think – and I don‘t see how it serves or develops the main story.

I‘m sure I thought so, too, when I first read the book but obviously the overall impression that stayed in my mind all these years was a more gentle one.

And I remember situations in my life during the last 2-3 years where I felt similar because I definitely needed to make particular decisions on my own since those who usually gave useful advice were unable to due to lack of own experience. So, yes, I understand this feeling of helplessness when you‘re facing situations you have no patterns of how to deal with them for.

Anyway, here, the „poor-rich-girl“-feeling towards Naoko overweighs.

quote
Buechersuechtling
post image

“Somehow it‘s stupid to turn twenty, I‘m not ready yet. A strange feeling. As if something had pushed me from behind.”

Naoko at 1:40:09

⬆️⬆️⬆️ I feel like bleating precociously: “Girl, if you‘re already feeling this way at twenty. 🙄 Go, and grow up because life seldom asks in advance if you‘re ready. It just sends you challenges.” But I surely know she feels vulnerable and like she had to grow up too soon.

4mo

Finally manage to listen to “Norwegian Wood”, the Beatles song the book starts with.
Yes, now I understand why Murakami decided to chose it.

(I wonder how I have ever been able to read books non-interactively in the before-internet-era. 😂)

I like very much how David Nathan reads it. Just figured out why, he „is“ George Eads and Mark Sloane. 😂

But obviously my brain needs more to do, so, 🥁, I will begin with yesterday‘s present 💝 now. 😍

I liked some elements of this book a lot, but because it was so highly rated I expected...more. You can tell that Murakami is a gifted writer but also that it‘s an earlier work, not yet reaching the heights he‘s capable of. I‘d say it‘s a pick for Murakami fans.

#OneWordReview: Murakamish!

I thought for a long time, in what way one is to describe any murakami novel in perfect words and then i came up with this. I have my own reasons to use or make up this word. As this was not my first murakami novel, i'm pretty much familiar with what one should expect when it comes to murakami novels. You gotta read his works to know what i'm really talking about. It's not The best of murakami but it's a Good read.

imitelis I should be reading "Death in the air" right now. I know. But i haven't touched that book since many days. It's not that there's anything wrong with the book. No. It's interesting to read and i know i'll go thru it no matter what. But, here's the thing, THE MOOD. I'm not in mood to read non-fiction. Nah. However great and interesting it is, i don't give a damn. I guess it'd take me few more days to get back in mood and pick this non fiction book. 8mo
imitelis I was going thru some of my favorite classics. Again & Again... That's how i know why those books passed the test of time and have retained themselves even now. Ever green books. That's why they are classics 8mo
imitelis In particular, i was "wandering" thru the beautifully written book series "In search of lost time" and "Anne of green gables". Apart from that, i lost myself in world of poetry. 8mo
See All 13 Comments
imitelis So yeah.. It's completely unrelated to the post i know. But i wanted to say these things anyway. 8mo
imitelis About this book called "Norwegian wood" 8mo
imitelis I'd say it's a treat for those who love the Beatles and classical music etc. As there are many references to that stuff throughout the novel. It's not something unusual though. Murakami have done it in almost all the novels i have read. 8mo
imitelis Apart from that, the prose is beautiful. Not "Conrad"-y. But in a Murakamish way. Characters are well developed. At least that's what i found the most interesting part of this book. The book doesn't have much plot to it but the Ending, uh... That's the best thing about this book. At least to me 8mo
imitelis I should have read it earlier. But it never attracted me so much compared to other novels by murakami. Novels like Kafka on the shore or The wind up bird chronicle. Those are masterpieces, no doubt in that 8mo
imitelis But i'm Glad that i chose to read it. 8mo
imitelis To tell you the truth, some of it (most of it) i listened (audiobook) and some of it i read. 8mo
imitelis In all, i found it satisfying . now i'm aware that there are lot of readers out there who never liked this one outing by murakami that much. But in my experience, this one is really good. I really liked it . i'd not have liked it that much if murakami would have kept the ending different . 8mo
booklahoma @Aashkaar Well said! Murakamish is a great descriptor. 8mo
imitelis Yeah.. You're right! 8mo

Sad, lyrical, lonely; beautiful and atmospherical. Murakami draws you into intimate details of a scene, a conversation, everyday vignettes of life. His characters do not belong; teeter between sanity and mental illness; between life and death. Some cannot move on; the rest are left with grief and aching love. Beautiful, hopeless yet hopeful, honest, sexually liberated, but emotionally bound. Unique and mesmerizing, but also too sad. ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️/5

batsy I read this a long time ago, but your review brings to mind why I loved it. That languid sadness... When Murakami does it well, he does it so well! 10mo

It's not the usual Murakami book but it is definitely one that's hard to put down. So much simplicity in the protagonist's love life but yet intriging enough. As usual, Murakami described all the normalities so perfectly. Even when the protagonist is just ralking a walk in the park, it's magical.

Self referential fiction ... not all that common.

So far so good on my 3rd book for @TheReadingMermaid 's #BookaWeekChallenge. This is one of my husband's favorites, so I have high expectations for it. It did not receive a single vote for August's #MakeMeReadIt, though, so I'm skipping over 5th and 6th place. Mostly, though, I just want to take a break from nonfiction.

2. I have 2 *least* faves: "Not like this. Not like this." (The Matrix) & "No.. no.. waaaarm" (Jim Carrey's Grinch)
3. I like to say Muh-LEE-Chee, which is my fave mispronunciation of my baby's name yet.?
