Witch Doesn't Burn in This One
Witch Doesn't Burn in This One | Amanda Lovelace
2016 Goodreads Choice Award-winning poet Amanda Lovelace returns in the witch doesn't burn in this one -- the bold second book in her "women are some kind of magic" series. The witch: supernaturally powerful, inscrutably independent, and now--indestructible. These moving, relatable poems encourage resilience and embolden women to take control of their own stories. Enemies try to judge, oppress, and marginalize her, but the witch doesn't burn in this one.

I throughly enjoyed this book.
It felt like a 'Battle Cry' book with a side dish of hatred, witchcraft, taking no shit, standing up for other woman.
Definitely one of my favourites.

I have been after books from Amanda Lovelace and Courtney Peppernell for a while now but they where too expensive but on World of Books I got a great deal, and we all know Nikita Gill is just fabulous author so that went too 😀

A gorgeous book. A beautiful collection of poems that I felt spoke to the fiery woman deep inside all of us. A lesson in reclaiming the power of our ancestors who have been wronged for being strong and powerful. Generational female trauma is slowly beginning to be gealed with literature such as this 🖤🔥🖤

Wonderful, amazing, and inspiring. This book somehow had me wanting to cuddle with my boyfriend, happy that I managed to find one of the good ones, but also inspired me to finish writing all the stories I started and never finished because I thought I could never make it as a writer. Amanda Lovelace is an amazing poet and I really love that she includes poems that encourage her readers to follow their dreams and write their own stories or poems.

My first Amanda Lovelace, this is a collection of fiery, feminist poems, empowering women to stand up for their rights, be courageous, and be a survivor. There are a few inspiring poems, but most sounded like angry rants which is not my cup of tea. Pick for it‘s important message/content.

Lovelace is definitely conveying a lot of anger towards men here, but rightfully so if she is representing women who have been raped, abused, ignored, and degraded by men. Many poems are closer to short prose, there is definitely empowerment galore, and I was impressed by how she linked them all together with fire. I have certainly been made to feel “less-than” as a woman in my life and found myself nodding my head in solidarity.

⭐️⭐️⭐️

After DNFing this book last year, I attempted this collection of poetry again. Overall, this is a scathing book of feminist poetry that rages against the patriarchy and advocates self-love and embracing womanhood. I enjoyed the topics that were mentioned, such as the 2016 election and the 2017 Women‘s March, but I found that a good portion of the “poetry” inside this book weren‘t really poems but just statements.

This was an interesting anthology of poems focusing on feminism, empowerment, identity, self-love, and fighting the patriarchy. It also explores themes of sisterhood, pays homage to various other literary texts, and even the 2017 Women‘s March is written about. #FBCReadathon

I didn't hate it. I just think maybe I picked the wrong format (audio). It was very angry and she repeats words for a super (feels like forever) long of time to where I thought the audio didn't download appropriately. So yeah... its more of a so-so. It also might have been the wrong time for me read a book like this one

ElizaMarie Also because I borrowed it from the library I‘m counting it as having borrowed it from a friend (librarians are friends right?) 4y
Lizpixie Why is my May Book Bingo different than yours? 4y
ElizaMarie @Lizpixie Mine maybe be a different year? I just googled May Bookish Bingo and found this one. I am not really thinking I am gonna do many of these prompts though. 4y
Lizpixie @ElizaMarie I think yours is definitely last year, mine has a 2020 specific prompt on it. A lot are the same though so I don‘t think it really matters which one you do👍 4y

You can tell these poems are angry from the first page just because the ink is all in red. With a title about witches burning, what‘d you expect? That‘s exactly what these poems go after; women being left behind in history. The women being told she‘s too dramatic, too loud. The book progresses into the poems becoming the witch tired of being burnt, and ready to burn the world around her. Not much of a fan of the aggression, but so much raw feeling

literarymermaid This is my favorite collection of hers so far. There's just something about the aggression and being so done that I really love too. 4y

While I enjoyed most of her first collection, I find that this one just didn't resonate with me.
Certain style choices like the constant use of hyphens kind of threw me off as I read it, and made it seem more disjointed.

I will most like still check out her other stuff though, because the poems that worked for me, really worked.

2.5/5 Stars (rounding up to three on sites with star systems)

Cinfhen I wasn‘t a fan of this volume, either. 4y

This one was longer than the other books but just wonderfully written. She tells a story about witches and then does poems about rape and feminism. Kudos to just making us women feel important in this day and age with your strong words. Simply beautiful.

And this is yet another book that I bailed on. I enjoyed Lovelace‘s previous “the princess saves herself in this one”, but this one is a lot angrier and felt a bit anti-men. I also thought that some of the poems I had made it through needed some work or were basically just phrases with spaces in between them. I will have to attempt this one again at another time.

This is officially the first time I have ever used the “Bail” review on Litsy. I am going to try this again in print sometime, as I liked her other book, but the audio is terrible. Like REALLY bad. I didn‘t even make it ten minutes, and then happily returned it to Overdrive for some other poor, unsuspecting patron. Some authors are just not meant to be narrators.

ElizaMarie I‘m listening to it right now. It‘s angry. I don‘t know if I‘d much rather have read it myself 4y
