the witch doesn't burn in this one
the witch doesn't burn in this one | Amanda Lovelace, ladybookmad
The witch: supernaturally powerful, inscrutably independent, and nowindestructible. These moving, relatable poems encourage resilience and embolden women to take control of their own stories. Enemies try to judge, oppress, and marginalize her, but the witch doesnt burn in this one.

I learned alot from reading this poetry collection but you should be warned a lot of the poems are difficult to read. In the sense of the content is very hard to hear.

This one was longer than the other books but just wonderfully written. She tells a story about witches and then does poems about rape and feminism. Kudos to just making us women feel important in this day and age with your strong words. Simply beautiful.

And this is yet another book that I bailed on. I enjoyed Lovelace‘s previous “the princess saves herself in this one”, but this one is a lot angrier and felt a bit anti-men. I also thought that some of the poems I had made it through needed some work or were basically just phrases with spaces in between them. I will have to attempt this one again at another time.

This is officially the first time I have ever used the “Bail” review on Litsy. I am going to try this again in print sometime, as I liked her other book, but the audio is terrible. Like REALLY bad. I didn‘t even make it ten minutes, and then happily returned it to Overdrive for some other poor, unsuspecting patron. Some authors are just not meant to be narrators.

Can I be honest Litsy?
I‘ve been through some stuff
But not enough
To hate men enough
To like this volume as much
As the first

We need each other‘s stories, yes. To know we aren‘t alone. But not as much as we need action. Not the blip of a march‘s soundbyte on the news. But the hard daily work of calling people out on their BS at work. For me, that lays the groundwork for the next generation to have to do less to be taken more seriously. 👇🏻

megnews I‘ve been on this soapbox for awhile. But a Huffpost article about not “being permitted” to walk through the office with a tampon really riled me up last week. 1. Stop talking. 2. Walk through the office with your tampon out if you want. You just empowered yourself. Feels better than the talk that only burns your soul. We are burning ourselves now with the talk. Talk less. Act more. Off my soapbox now. Back to regular programming. 11mo

I adore Amanda Lovelace's poetry. Her first collection knocked my socks off, and this sequel is just as good. Her work is personal, political, profound, and powerful. I highly recommend it even to folks who don't typically read poetry.

I included the trigger warnings page as the image for any folks who may need those before choosing to start reading.

So I didn't love this as much as the previous one but I did enjoy it immensely. The prose are so fascinating and creatively done. The topics are gutwrenching but most of us know them well. I am just glad that these are in the world.

Maybe it‘s because I read both of her novels back to back, but this one seemed a lot more angry for anger‘s sake. Sprinkled throughout were also a lot of quotes and excerpts that were either taken from other sources or repetitive in nature. In an already short novel full of poems, anything frivolous really stands out. I also might be in the minority here, but to me there‘s a fine line between coming across as pro women without being anti men.

I been reading Amanda Lovelace's poetry and this book is hands down my favorite. There were some really powerful pieces that resonated with me. Now, I really want to join a coven.

#CovenRules
1. Always put yourself first. Sacrifice at your own discretion.
2. Burn whoever tries to burn you.
3. Make no apologies; accept no apologies.
4. Know that anger has it's limits and act accordingly.

Unfortunately this is one I didn‘t end up liking. While it does start strong and have a few good messages, it quickly went downhill for me. Too much generalizations and man hating. I am all for girl power and finding common ground, but the author plays a victim too well in this book.

I know all too well of the inexplicable acts that women have faced at the hands of men. I was attracted to the idea of reading poetry written by a woman who speaks her truth so unashamedly. With that being said, I was left disheartened by the amount of rage that was directed at men, as if all men are guilty based on the fact that they are men. Eradicating all men seemed to be Lovelace‘s solution and I didn‘t find that empowering.

Ye_Mighty_Andy_Spare Your tattoos are intriguing. Is it impolite to ask their significance? 1y
quirkthenerd @Ye_Mighty_Andy_Spare Thank you 🙂 Definitely not impolite! Ask away! To be honest, they do not have much significance at all. The one design on my thumb is a Viking symbol that signifies ‘create your own reality‘. I‘m a firm believer in the idea that tattoos do not require profound significance to be placed on your body. Tattoos, personally, help me feel comfortable in my own skin. 1y

Some of these poems were a bit *too* “ALL men are horrible”, which I simply cannot get behind due to both my dad and my fiancé being truly amazing people that support me and empower me. However, judging by how I bookmarked a fair amount of these poems due to them being inspiring and witty, I‘ll say this collection is a “pick”.

I read this because like the first I fell into the hype and this one, although it was driven with passion, was more misandry than feminist to me and I think this is enough for me.
There's a few poems that I can take with me but as a whole, no.
