A Court of Thorns and Roses
A Court of Thorns and Roses | Sarah J. Maas
THE INSTANT NEW YORK TIMES BESTSELLERPerfect for fans of Kristin Cashore and George R.R. Martin, this first book in a sexy and action-packed new series is impossible to put down! When nineteen-year-old huntress Feyre kills a wolf in the woods, a beast-like creature arrives to demand retribution for it. Dragged to a treacherous magical land she only knows about from legends, Feyre discovers that her captor is not an animal, but Tamlin--one of the lethal, immortal faeries who once ruled their world. As she dwells on his estate, her feelings for Tamlin transform from icy hostility into a fiery passion that burns through every lie and warning she's been told about the beautiful, dangerous world of the Fae. But an ancient, wicked shadow over the faerie lands is growing, and Feyre must find a way to stop it . . . or doom Tamlin--and his world--forever.

Today‘s #colormepretty is #red!

Most of these I‘ve already covered in previous posts, so go check those out if you missed them!

Inkheart was okay. I remember loving the movie, but I just never really got super into the book.

State of Emergency is disaster series that got worse after book 1.

Malice I read in middle school with a friend. That book and it‘s sequel are really interesting and definitely a good read for younger audiences.

Guys guys guyss! Quick question, have you ever read a book which has given you readers block? I mean a book that just stops your reading cycle for days or months? If yes, then which one was it and how did you overcome it? 😰

Shley9225 Is this block kind of like a reading slump, where you‘re just not motivated to pick up another book like you usually are? Or more like you just CANNOT move on from an amazing book you finished and get it out of your head? 1w
Shley9225 Anyways 2suggestions for the former are: read some shorter stories, like a short contemporary or a graphic novel. Something you can blow through in a day or two and feel accomplished about. And two: try reading something you normally aren‘t in the mood for. Don‘t worry about what‘s next on your TBR or what your book club is reading this month, read WHATEVER sounds kind of interesting to you today ❤️ Hope that helps! 1w
Mishu94 @Shley9225 it‘s more like a reading slump, where you just can‘t seem to read anything! I had that recently for the longest time! It took me months to get out of it! So I thought I‘d ask if you guys also go through this slump! 1w

Mishu94 @Shley9225 that‘s what I have been doing! And honestly since I have joined Litsy my reading game is going strong! I‘m enjoying reading even more now! 😁 1w
Shley9225 @Mishu94 yeah, I‘ve been going through the past few months, too, and am MAYBE FINALLY JUST getting over it. We‘ll see. I‘m on my second book of the week I just couldn‘t put down so I‘m starting to feel like my old self :) 1w
Mishu94 @Shley9225 i know that feeling! It feels so good to be reading again! And which book got you out of it? 😁 1w
Mishu94 @Shley9225 I haven‘t ever read science fiction! Is it good? 1w
Shley9225 @Mishu94 omg so good! Amie Kaufman and Jay Kiristoff are the best co-writers ever. You can also check out their other (finished) series 1w
Mishu94 @Shley9225 okay I would love to! Thank you so much! 😁 1w

About to start my next read! Have no idea what it‘s going to be like because the guy at the bookstore recommended it to me! 🤭 Oh well atleast I‘ll get to enjoy a nice cuppa with Nutella banana bread 🤤 Has anyone read this? I‘d really like your thoughts about it! 😬

julesG You don't really want my thoughts about it. Trust me. What I remember is YA, masks, lots of snow, lots of trees,... Read it when #DickSoapGate was hot. One of the YA reads definitely not suited for a younger teenage audience 1w
BethM I adore this series! But I‘m also a YA fantasy fan. 1w
Mishu94 @julesG I literally just started reading it! 😂 I‘m on page 5! 😂😂🤦‍♂️ And I haven‘t really explored fantasy books! Like I have only read Harry Potter and the hunger games series! I would really love it if you could recommend me top notch books of this genre! 😁 1w

julesG A fantasy YA series that I liked is 1w
Mishu94 @julesG it‘s stacked! 😁 I‘ll read it once I finish this 😬 1w
Shley9225 Oooooh some other great YA fantasy is Shadow and Bone by Leigh Bardugo, Six of Crows by Leigh Bardugo, Cinder by Marissa Meyer (this one‘s a bit sci-fi but you‘ll like it), Girls of Paper and Fire by Natasha Ngan, The Cruel Prince by Holly Black, anything by Cassandra Clare, or something by Anna-Marie McLemore. Sorry this is so long, I tried to get you some variety bc I don‘t know your tastes too well :) 1w
Mishu94 @Shley9225 OMG! Thank you so so much for taking out the time and recommending these! 😭❤️ I‘ll check all of them out and whichever catches my attention, that shall go on my TBR 😁 1w
bewareofwords I love this series!! I will say that I liked the second book better, so if you get to the end of this first one and it‘s just okay, it‘s worth trying the second one. :) And @Shley9225 gave a really great fantasy YA list—I also LOVED the Throne of Glass series (also by Sarah J. Maas!). 💖 1w
Mishu94 @bewareofwords I have been reading it all day long! The story is slowly building up so let‘s see how that goes! And thank you so much, I‘ll definitely look it up! 😁 1w

My favorite series of the year so far is the A Court of Thorns and Roses series. Sarah J Maas has become one of my favorite authors. I never had read anything by her until this year. I‘m reading Throne of Glass right now and I love it just as much, if not more.

HOTPock3tt I recently started “A Court of Thornes and Roses” and I‘m sooo hooked on it!! I only want to read it and not the library books I have due in just a few days 😅lol. It‘s SO much fun though!! #LovingIt (edited) 3w

It‘s your basic Beauty and Beast plot which makes it somewhat predictable. The world of fae is well designed and mysterious. The plot expands and becomes a bit more complex. I‘d recommend it to fantasy lovers.

This one was entertaining, but problematic. I don‘t feel like the character relationships were developed very well. I was frustrated by a lot of the decisions & actions of the characters. Without spoiling anything, it felt like a weird compilation of other tales (Beauty & the Beast, Hunger Games, etc.) with some cheesy descriptions & predictable plot points. I didn‘t hate it, but I‘m on the fence about reading the next one. Does it get better?

Hestapleton The second one is my absolute favorite and addresses some of the problematic stuff from the first one. The second one is CHUNKY book, but the strongest in the series. 1mo
LibrarianRyan The #LitsyAfterDark group read this after the #dicksoapgate thing. Most of us agree with you. Some toxic masculinity. Why of why are people so keen on the secondary relationship. Why does our “heroine“ allow her self to be used etc. I didn't hate it, but i didn't love it either. I may read book 2 because I do own it, but it is not priority. 1mo
Avidreader25 @Hestapleton Ok, that gives me a bit I hope. I might check it out now. 1mo
Avidreader25 @LibrarianRyan Yes! The scenes that really bothered me were the aggressive and unconsenting use of the main character. It felt unnecessary and once again sends the wrong message about what‘s OK when it comes to consent. Why is it “sexy” if a male character is forcing himself on someone? 1mo
Hestapleton @Avidreader25 @LibrarianRyan yes book 2 DEF address toxic masculinity stuff. Also, #dicksoapgate still makes me crack up lol 1mo

I‘m not a big YA reader and there were parts I found a lil cringy, but overall I was so impressed! I know if I‘d read it when I was younger I‘d have been totally obsessed with it and I definitely want to finish the series. I‘m so pleased the Tam Lin legend is being reimagined now, it‘s one of my favourites! Completely compulsive, I sped through it in a few days and would recommend to anyone interested in YA - it hooked me and I barely read it

Guess who finally got a Southwark library card and access to ebooks???? It‘s gonna save me so much money!

Issue is I don‘t have a tablet or e-reader that will support downloading apps and mean I can read without straining my eyes and making the pain in my wrists worse on my phone. I could get a second hand Fire for (e7 which seems like a fair deal and would save me so much money on buying books, but (e7 is... money. What do you guys think?

vumblereads Congratulations on getting the library card! Ereaders are so sturdy, I still have the first kindle paperwhite and use it for reading my library loans. I would maybe wait for a sale or get a second hand ereader if you can. I sometimes use the kindle app on my iphone and change the background to light green. I find that this is gentler on my eyes compared to the other background colors. 3mo
Kaye Just my opinion, so feel free to disregard it. If you‘re having wrist problems from holding your phone, I‘d advise against the Fire. They‘re heavy and clunky to hold. Does your library rent kindles ? Ours loans them out but I don‘t know the details. If you‘re looking for a lightweight way to read ebooks, you‘d be better off getting a kindle. They‘re so lightweight I doubt they‘d bother your wrists at all. 3mo
Stacy_31 I second what @kaye said. I have the Fire and it is rather heavy. I have a cover with a stand so I don't have to hold it. 😳😳. My husband's Paperwhite, however, is very lightweight and comfortable enough for him to hold even with arthritis. If you can find a secondhand Paperwhite or a good sale, I'd go with that one. 3mo
See All 35 Comments
AlaMich I absolutely agree with @kaye and @Stacy_31. Fires are HEAVY! I have hand issues as well and it‘s a problem. The paperwhite is a better choice, but you need to check if it plays nicely with whatever format your library‘s ebooks use. It shouldn‘t be a problem, but just in case. (edited) 3mo
julesG I second @kaye and @Stacy_31, the Fire is heavy. And it's the same strain on your eyes as reading on your phone. I'd go for a Paperwhite. Second hand is good. Amazon Warehouse Deals is better; I bought a "refurbished" one with full warranty for 40 Euros. It has a tiny scratch on the back, which I don't see because it's in a protective cover. 3mo
julesG Yes, @AlaMich, is right. Some libraries don't go with kindle. Mine, for example, doesn't offer kindle support. I'd need another eReader to check out ebooks from the library 😵😵😵 3mo
ShyBookOwl I have chronic pain issues and I use a kindle paperwhite. For reference, it is difficult for me to read a paperback over 300 pages. If you can find a used paperwhite, I highly recommend it! 3mo
ShyBookOwl @julesG my library doesn't use kindle either which makes it pretty inaccessible to me since pain issues make it difficult for me to read physical books 😕 bummer. 3mo
julesG @ShyBookOwl Right there with you. Have trouble holding a book open with one hand. Sometimes even with two hands. Get cramps, or can't grip tight enough. I've asked my library whether there is any chance of converting the books to kindle format, but they were adamant that one format should be enough and I could always read on my phone if I didn't want to buy another eReader. 😵😬 One of the reasons I no longer have a library card, just the kids. 3mo
AlaMich You might want to look into a Kobo. I just ordered one, though I haven‘t received it yet, and it seems that they are much more flexible regarding formats. I don‘t know how easy it would be to find a used one but I just thought I‘d suggest it. I chose the Clara HD, which is even a little lighter than my old paperwhite. 3mo
AlaMich @julesG “You can just read on your phone?” Wow. That is...very unhelpful. 3mo
ShyBookOwl @julesG I'm glad I'm not the only one who has encountered this. I sometimes feel ripped off when it comes to all the library love in the book community lol But then I tell myself, when I buy an outrageous amount of kindle books, at least the authors are getting a % (however small it may be). 3mo
AlaMich @julesG Have you looked into the app Calibre? It converts book files into other formats. I haven‘t used it personally but I think it‘s definitely worth a look. https://www.techadvisor.co.uk/how-to/digital-home/how-put-ebooks-on-kindle-36909... 3mo
ShyBookOwl @AlaMich it's great that kobo allows for more format flexibility, but are books for kobo pricier than kindle? I've never looked into it, but amazon pricing is usually the most affordable (if u don't mind that it's Amazon, which I don't). 3mo
AlaMich @ShyBookOwl I just replied to julesG with this. Have you looked into the app Calibre? It converts book files into other formats. I haven‘t used it personally but I think it‘s definitely worth a look. https://www.techadvisor.co.uk/how-to/digital-home/how-put-ebooks-on-kindle-36909... 3mo
julesG @AlaMich The ladies at the information desk can still be glad that a) I had both my kids with me, and b) my son spoke up that this was ridiculous and definitely not inclusive, and my daughter pointed out that I have health issues. I bought both kids a book afterwards for behaviour and stepping up for me - also, keeping me from exploding. 😁 3mo
julesG @AlaMich Yep, I've used Calibre before. But the darn library books have copy protection and cannot be converted into any other format. 😬 3mo
ShyBookOwl @julesG Great kids! 3mo
ShyBookOwl @AlaMich thanks! I think library books will be protected against this but it's really good to know 3mo
AlaMich @julesG Awww! You raised them right! 😊 3mo
julesG Sorry Emily for hijacking your post. But you see, it is a topic that needs discussing. 😉 3mo
AlaMich @julesG @ShyBookOwl Well that‘s a bummer. 😕 3mo
Emilymdxn @AlaMich @julesG @ShyBookOwl @stacy_31 @kaye thank you very much for your tips! Unfortunately I don‘t think the paperwhite is likely to work with the southwark library system, I spent a while trying to make it work and didn‘t have much luck. The weight of the fire is a bummer but shouldn‘t be too much of an issue for me - my hands have more of an issue with awkward holding positions, so as long as it‘s touch screen and I can swipe to turn pages (edited) 3mo
Emilymdxn @julesG I can‘t believe the library said that to you!! That‘s shocking and really awful. I used to sit on a library services committee at uni and I took no shit from people trying to make things worse for disabled people. I made sure to wear my big wrist splints so that they felt awkward telling me they didn‘t support my ideas to make stuff easier for people with hand and wrist difficulties. It can be such a struggle making things more accessible (edited) 3mo
julesG If the Paperwhite won't work with the Southwark library system, then the Fire might not work either. It's the same ebook format. Yes, the Fire has the advantage of Apps that might let you read. But, then you could get a small tablet computer. Might be lighter and have better/more storage/Harddisk space. 3mo
Emilymdxn @julesG the issue with the paperwhite is that the library will only let you read through an app, so anything that didn‘t support apps wouldn‘t work but anything with apps would. I don‘t have a laptop to use calibre or download and switch ebook formats for paperwhite, so it looks cheaper to get the fire than a laptop that could download things for paperwhite 3mo
julesG That's why I suggested a tablet. Gives you the same functionality as the Fire but definitely has more harddisk space. My Fire can't handle more than four apps, because it only has 8 GB. Okay, it's one of the first generations and they might have changed that by now. Still, if you have to buy something that uses apps, I'd recommend getting a tablet computer. https://www.zdnet.com/article/when-to-buy-an-android-tablet-and-when-to-buy-a-ki... 3mo
SW-T Congrats on the new library card! Hope you can find an affordable tablet that supports the apps you need. 3mo
Weaponxgirl I use my iPad for app reading (expensive I know) I got locked in years ago to apple and since I use it mainly for book reading they do last me at least 4 years each time I‘ve bought one. The eye strain can be very real but I‘ve found switching screen colour helps me personally with that since I read a lot at night. I‘ve got the mini which for me is a great size for reading and not as heavy as. The larger one but I don‘t have any issues so cant 3mo
Weaponxgirl Comment fully on how heavy it would be for someone else. The library has saved me a lot of money with ebooks. Just saying what has worked for me personally. 3mo
SW-T @Weaponxgirl I use an iPad mini also. Litsy, Overdrive, Hoopla, iBooks, Nook, and Kindle. I had more but a couple of them folded (Shelfari, Oyster). It fits in my purse and I use a darker screen to relieve eye strain. Totally in love 🥰 3mo
Emilymdxn @julesG thank you for your suggestions! I‘ll read some comparison articles and consult my dad the tech guru and let you all know tomorrow what I order! 3mo
Emilymdxn @Weaponxgirl long term I‘d definitely like to get an iPad mini! Possibly next Christmas! I‘d love to cram a lot of bookish stuff on there! Whatever I buy I‘ll make sure I get an app to filter the screen and help with eye strain 3mo
Weaponxgirl @SW-T sounds similar to my setup except hoopla isn‘t very good in the uk unfortunately. Litsy, iBooks, kindle, audible, scribd (I love this one soooo much), ZINIO as my library also does emagazines and I saw it has the Paris Review for sale, then some poetry and different magazine apps that are bookish and then finally podcasts for bookish listening all in one place. I can‘t really imagine not having one now. 3mo
SW-T @Weaponxgirl I‘m old enough to remember when scribd first started it was just free PDFs of old instruction manuals, study guides, & white papers. 🤣🤣 3mo

Herbology OWL: 4⭐️

This was definitely a fun ride and I understand the hype behind it. There were a lot of things that I enjoyed primarily Lucien all around, but also the many differnt types of fairies/creatures and the music playing from the plants and animals of the Spring Court. I did have an issue with the tattoo dress scene but I understood the reasoning behind it.

BethM I love this series so hard. I didn‘t get the retelling though, and honestly didn‘t know it was supposed to be one. 4mo
sammisho I loved this series so hard too! @BethM 4mo
TsundokuAleax @BethM I think Tamlin is suppose to be Gaston while Rhys is the Beast. 4mo

BethM @TsundokuAleax that makes sense I guess. I‘d rather think of it as it‘s own story. Makes more sense to me. 4mo
Purrsistently @BethM I didn't know it was supposed to be one either till recently! There's been a couple of new b&b retellings released lately and that made me want to go read all the ones I could find. 😻 4mo
TsundokuAleax @BethM I get it. They author is kinda smart in the way she turns the whole thing on its head. I love how you settle into this world and realize how skewed the view was. Also the parallels between the guys and who the represent is more visible when you go back and reread it. It doesn't really play out the same way as b&b but you can see it better. 4mo

Are you guys reading anything this weekend? I‘m at a track meet all day and extremely tired so I doubt I read much this weekend sadly.

If you love a world-creation story, where you slip from the world we know into a new world filled with wonder, amazement, possibilities and terror - you‘ll love falling in love with this book! The characters are vivid and well planned out - and the writing takes me breath away. Swoon ... I can‘t decide who I love more ... the good boy, the bad boy, or the friend ... #ACOTAR #yesfromme

This book is a twist on the beauty and the beast story with fairies. It is by no means sweet, in parts it is violent and very adult. The works Maas is built I‘d really quite incredible and believable. On the whole I don‘t know if I will continue with this series as I am not that invested.

Finally read this #blameitonlitsy book that I‘ve picked up multiple times from the library but kept not starting. Sometimes books are so hyped up I‘m reluctant to read them in case they don‘t live up to my expectations. This one came pretty close. This is a fun fantasy pulpy violent tale of good vs evil and the power of love. Not new tropes but handled with care and it made for a fast, compelling read. I‘m excited to have a new series to dig into!

annahenke Just wait until you read book two! 4mo
erinreads The second one is my favorite of the series! Hope you enjoy the rest! 4mo

I was so hooked that I stayed up until 1:30 reading which is late for me! I know there were 3 other books in the series and I‘m super excited to see where they lead to, I simply can‘t imagine.
I also loved the writing style. It was easy to read but not too simple that I got frustrated.
The plot line was flawless, I wasn‘t expecting all the turns of events which made them a wonderful (yet scary!) surprise. 5/5 stars!

BethM I waited a long time to read this and then wondered why I did! Soooo good! 4mo
Lydsters @BethM same here! I so wish I had picked it up years ago 4mo
BookishBlonde12 I‘m in love with this series! About to wrap up book book two, which in my opinion, so much better than the first book! 4mo

This was a re-read. I first read it before the sequels were out, so I needed a refresher.
