Love Song of Miss Queenie Hennessy
Love Song of Miss Queenie Hennessy | Rachel Joyce
From the bestselling author of The Unlikely Pilgrimage of Harold Fry comes an exquisite love story about Queenie Hennessy, the remarkable friend who inspired Harold's cross-country journey.A runaway international bestseller, The Unlikely Pilgrimage of Harold Fry followed its unassuming hero on an incredible journey as he traveled the length of England on foot--a journey spurred by a simple letter from his old friend Queenie Hennessy, writing from a hospice to say goodbye. Harold believed that as long as he kept walking, Queenie would live. What he didn't know was that his decision to walk had caused her both alarm and fear. How could she wait? What would she say? Forced to confront the past, Queenie realizes she must write again. In this poignant parallel story to Harold's saga, acclaimed author Rachel Joyce brings Queenie Hennessy's voice into sharp focus. Setting pen to paper, Queenie makes a journey of her own, a journey that is even bigger than Harold's; one word after another, she promises to confess long-buried truths--about her modest childhood, her studies at Oxford, the heartbreak that brought her to Kingsbridge and to loving Harold, her friendship with his son, the solace she has found in a garden by the sea. And, finally, the devastating secret she has kept from Harold for all these years. A wise, tender, layered novel that gathers tremendous emotional force, The Love Song of Miss Queenie Hennessy underscores the resilience of the human spirit, beautifully illuminating the small yet pivotal moments that can change a person's life. Praise for The Love Song of Miss Queenie Hennessy "In the end, this lovely book is full of joy. Much more than the story of a woman's enduring love for an ordinary, flawed man, it's an ode to messy, imperfect, glorious, unsung humanity. . . . [Queenie's] love song is for us. Thank you, Rachel Joyce."--The Washington Post "Destined to change your world. One can't help but see life, and the end of it, differently after experiencing this novel. Full of wisdom and heart, it will overwhelm its readers with a deep sensitivity."--Bookreporter "[A] beguiling follow-up . . . In telling Queenie's side of the story, Joyce accomplishes the rare feat of endowing her continuing narrative with as much pathos and warmth, wisdom and poignancy as her debut. Harold was beloved by millions; Queenie will be, too."--Booklist (starred review)"Delightful and dark . . . But Joyce is so deft that when the book is over and you close the cover, the darkness fades. What sticks with you is the light of Queenie's unwavering love."--Minneapolis Star Tribune "[A] deeply affecting novel . . . Culminating in a shattering revelation, [Queenie's] tale is funny, sad, hopeful: She's bound for death, but full of life."--People "Joyce's writing at moments has a simplicity that sings. She captures hope best of all."--The Guardian "Joyce has a wonderfully evocative turn of phrase and like her other books this is a delightful read. . . . Uplifting and moving."--Daily Express "Joyce nicely calls the book a companion rather than a sequel. But The Love Song is bolder than a retread of the same material from another angle. . . . After two such involving novels, readers are bound to wish for a third."--The Telegraph "[Joyce] manages to both add depth to an already strong work and build something new and beautiful upon it."--The A.V. Club From the Hardcover edition.

I‘m not sure what I expected from this companion novel to THE UNLIKELY PILGRIMAGE OF HAROLD FRY- but this fell a little short for me. Maybe because the end is so inevitable? Or that despite Joyce‘s best attempts, this is just a sad, sad story about unrequited love and regrets all set against the backdrop of hospice. I just never looked forward to picking it up despite the characters and great performance…

marleed @TheBookHippie Oh thanks! Compared to yesterday , today is a state of euphoria! My son,30, got his shot with me and suffered a quick morning headache but not enough to stop him from an 8 mile run. I can‘t tell you the last time I spent 36 hours in bed. 3y

marleed @TheBookHippie oh I‘m sending positive vibes your way. I over-hydrated prior and day of shot based on a friend‘s suggestion. I‘m glad I did that. I even pulled out my never-used thermometer- just in case. It‘s now well-used. What I forgot was that food might be unappetizing. I was so wishing I had some bland salteen crackers just so I could eat something. 3y
Alwaysbeenaloverofbooks I‘m glad you are feeling better ❤️ 3y
marleed @Alwaysbeenaloverofbooks Thanks. I‘m seldom with a raised temperature so it really helped that my symptoms were in line with what one might expect. I took Tylenol after 20 hours of sustained high temps because my eyes had been burning and that freaked me out. One of my sisters is managing an aggressive cancer with damaged heart, liver, and kidney. I kept thinking about how she positively moves through a day and realized I‘m a wimp! 3y
MandaManda @TheBookHippie I work at a hospital that had the pfizer vaccine research trial and everyone that I work with was like the younger you are the worse it is. But I had horrible symptoms and my coworker the same age had none. Truth is no one has any idea what causes one person to have symptoms and some don't have any at all. 3y
TheBookHippie @MandaManda I feel the same way. It has made no sense, I hope you're through the worst of it! 3y
marleed @MandaManda @TheBookHippie I went to brunch with both my son and DIL on Easter and was suggesting they be prepared for a couple socks days, also noting that I‘d most likely be fine. Humbled Again as it was they who suggested some chicken soup for me! 3y

marleed @MandaManda Oh thank you! It‘s my absolute pleasure to be a part of this club. Funny thing, a friend asked what I‘d do in 2 weeks. Besides flying to visit an ailing sister, I said I just wanted to browse in a store - even Target - without just running in and out for bare necessities! 3y

This book is the companion to The Unlikely Pilgrimage of Harold Fry. In this novel, we get Queenie‘s story, the friend for whom Harold is making his pilgrimage. Queenie is dying and needs to confess to Harold, so she takes up a pen and writes him a letter. We meet her fellow patients and caregivers as well, and they make an eccentric, quirky group of characters. Queenie‘s moving story is about finding forgiveness before death. ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️/5

Elizabeth2 It took me 2 weeks to finish this book, I think because I knew what the end brought, and I wanted to put that off. ❤️ I enjoyed my time with Queenie. 3y

Book 150 I listened to Queenie's perspective in Rachel Joyce's companion novel to The Unlikely Pilgrimage of Harold Fry.Though I appreciate knowing more of the story of Queenie and Harold, it's a disappointing story. The entire book serves as a pilgrimage to lost potential. Trite and flat, Queenie's peers at the nursing home exist solely to increase anticipation for Harold's arrival. The ending was somewhat redemptive, as it had a surprising twist.

What a really good book. It's a sequel to "The Unlikely Pilgrimage of Harold Frye" but you can read as standalone. I have read 3 of this authors books, and loved them all. Miss Hennessy is in hospice and receives a letter from Harold telling her he's on his way. While waiting, she writes to him every day, and the Sister transcribes, everything she has wanted to say to him(after 20 years). This book will touch your heart

This a great companion book to The Unlikely Pilgrimage of Harold Fry book. I suggest reading the Harold Fry book first though as Queenie's story will then make more sense. I found Queenie's love song to be very moving, tender and humorous in parts. It's about finding joy in sad circumstances and living life to the fullest. It's beautifully written and will be sure to touch your soul.

First of all: No I didn‘t like large parts of this book. The idea of pining away for someone a whole adult lifetime isn‘t very realistic to me. Also, Queenie doesn‘t seem smart to me, only weak.

But I liked the end (Sister Inconnue) and all that Quennie says during the last 2 hours about her garden. It‘s for that and for that I think the process of dying is described authentically that it‘s a “So-So”. Apart from that it‘s dragging and too long.

I admit I just checked this out from my library because I was a bit at a loss. I didn‘t feel like any of the other audiobooks on my wish list that were available. Might be why at hour 3 of 7 I am still not captured. I didn‘t like “Harold Fry”, you remember, and I am so annoyed by that repeated “I‘m-in-love-with-you”–theme. Oh, deal with it‼️🙄 Sigh. 😔 The scenes in hospice seem authentic but much other (inhabitants, nurses) is too exaggerated.

This companion book to The Unlikely Pilgrimage of Harold Fry (I gave ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ on Goodreads) was also excellent! This is Queenie‘s story, told in part with flashbacks and in part with her writing a letter to Harold while in hospice with terminal cancer. The hospice chapters aren‘t as sad as you would think as she is surrounded by an interesting menagerie of characters. Like with Harold‘s book, the ending is beautifully sad and wiped me out. 😰

Readergrrl Oh my, don‘t I love Harold Fry. I have this novel too but I‘ve been afraid to read it... I worry that it‘ll change how I feel about Unlikely Pilgrimage! I love that book SO much. What do you think? Are my fears unfounded? 5y
BestDogDad @Readergrrl I was kind of afraid of that, too. I didn‘t want my Harold Fry experience to be lessened or tainted and for me it wasn‘t. There is a lot of new background information about David which will fill in his story. But as far as her and Harold go it was neat experiencing their interactions through her eyes, especially the end. 😭 5y
Kaye I‘m also in the Harold Fry Camp. One of the best books ever. I like books like that, that teach a life lesson but yet are entertaining. I also have had Queenie sitting here a long time, not wanting her story to mess up Harold‘s side of the story, if that makes any sense. (edited) 5y
Suet624 @Readergrrl @Kaye I loved Harold‘s story. Queenie was a lovely addition to the story. They each hold a special spot in my heart. 5y

All the feels! A beautiful follow-up to Harold Fry. (I finished while at the dog run with Dexter.)

This story reminded me of a movie I recently watched called “Irreplaceable You.” Both the movie & this book deal with people who have terminal illnesses and how they face their death. Both are beautiful, touching stories.

And this marks a total of about 4 hrs for the #25inFive. (I‘m really bad about tracking time, so that‘s a guesstimate.)

Another great story by Rachel Joyce, out her work so far her newest novel The Music Shop is the only one I haven‘t liked, it didn‘t have her magic- it felt flat. I like TLOQH even better than I liked The Unlikely Pilgrimage Of Harold Fry! Joyce‘s enchantment of quirky lovable characters, messy real human lives, serious topics handled in a silly/funny manner and great stories shines in TLOQH! I HIGHLY recommend! Read Harold Fry first. 😁

What a lovely, lovely book! This is the parallel story to The Unlikely Pilgrimage of Harold Fry - told through a series of letters from Queenie as she struggles during her time in hospice. My heart just ached for the MC as she pushed herself in her own journey toward Harold. I would recommend reading these two books close together for full emotional impact. All the stars!!

God, if I thought Harold Fry *destroyed* me ... I don't know how to even begin describing what Queenie did to me 😭

I happened upon this novel in our lovely book shop on a sad day. I was looking for a chicken soup sort of book. Remembering the warmth of The Unlikely Pilgrimage of Harold Fry, I chose this and found it just as soothing and nurturing as I'd hoped. Not an action blockbuster. Not a laugh out loud riotous affair. But gentle and life affirming. Thank you Queenie.

How do I describe this book - beautiful, poignant, sad, happy, entertaining, funny, thought provoking & a great reading experience. It is all these things & more. This book should be read and do read it alongside it's companion book, The Unlikely Pilgrimage of Harold Fry. As the author says at the end it is not a prequel or a sequel but a companion. I am so glad I chose to read these two books, and am sad to have to say goodbye to the characters!

Yeah_I_Read I loved the unlikely pilgrimage of Harold fry ❤️❤️ 7y
