White Cat | Holly Black

Holly Black‘s older work is so much better than her Cruel Prince series. (Unpopular opinion maybe?) This book is about a teen who grows up in family of magic users, called Curseworkers, in a world where working magic is illegal. This book also features con artists and different crime families who use magic to control people and stay in power. It is dark, gritty and such a fun read!
(Too bad it suffers from an ugly, early 2000s, YA fantasy cover)

My first Agatha Christie mystery and it was so good! The sense of suspense and hints of supernatural influence really kept you guessing the entire time and toward the end of the book I was dying to know who did it!

This was a fun read and great for fans of political intrigue. The dragons were adorable but I recommend getting the print version of this so you can reference the different types of dragons because it does get confusing. The book can be slow at times but I‘ve heard good things about this series so I definitely will continue.

Tonight marks the end of an era. It is bittersweet for me because I‘m not quite ready for the end of a series I have loved and cried over for almost 10 years. It is also hard to accept the final chapter when the story is still not complete in novel form. With little hope that the last two books will ever be published, this will be a hard goodbye.

Fact about me, I am a special education teacher who works with kids with autism. I picked up this book for a class I‘m taking & it was such an insightful read. It was really interesting to hear about life with autism from an autistic person. My book currently has many colorful tabs in it marking thoughtful passages & quotes. I plan to keep this book handy, especially when reflecting on tough days, to remind me to have patience and understanding.

This book had so much potential and such an interesting premise but it really missed the mark by the end. The characterizations were so over the top and the motivations behind the decisions the characters made during the game were so confusing and overly complicated that it all ended up feeling pointless.

This series just doesn‘t live up to the hype. The plot twists are completely predictable and the main characters are awful. The relationship between Cardan and Jude is so toxic it is painful to read about. Ugh. I doubt I will bother to actually finish the series.

Vinjii Huh. I was looking for a review like that among all the love. I liked it, a lot, but I will fully admit I see the toxic, I see the abuse and I see predictability. I don‘t really know why it didn‘t bother me more....thank you for sharing your thoughts. 5mo

I really loved the setting (pre-unification Italy inspired), the main characters and the magic system; the strega were so interesting! The ending felt very rushed and left me wanting more. Overall though I enjoyed the story and recommend it.

P.S. Cielo gave me a Wizard Howl vibe from Howl‘s Moving Castle and I loved it.

Finished my first book of 2019!
I‘m still new to the military fantasy/flintlock fantasy genres but this series continues to be enjoyable. It is definitely a slow-burn fantasy but it is jam packed with political intrigue, secret societies and a bad ass group of female street gang. The magical elements that do show up are so intriguing and I can‘t wait to dive into the next book.

I don‘t normally read a lot of nonfiction but after watching a few short documentaries on Everest this month I picked up a copy of this book from my library last week and read it while on vacation. This book is haunting & the events described by Everest survivor, Krakauer, are terrifying. It is hard to give a rating to a book that is a true story/perspective piece of a mountaineering tragedy but I will say I enjoyed Krakauer‘s narrative & honesty.
