NOW A MAJOR BBC SERIES "From the incomparable Winston Graham... who has everything that anyone else has, then a whole lot more" The Guardian Ross Poldark is the first book in Winston Graham's sweeping series of Cornwall, Poldark. Tired from a grim war in America, Ross Poldark returns to his land and his family. But the joyful homecoming he has anticipated turns sour, for his father is dead, his estate is derelict and the girl he loves is engaged to his cousin. But his sympathy for the destitute miners and farmers of the district leads him to rescue a half-starved urchin girl from a fairground brawl and take her home - an act which alters the whole course of his life . . .

I love this show; sad it‘s the last season. The stakes are high and the characters make decisions that go from bad to worse. There‘s a light at the end of the tunnel; love ❤️

I just started watching Poldark last week and fell in love. I bought the first 3 books in the series a couple of years ago when they were on sale. Had to dive in shortly after starting the show. Thus far, the show is fairly true to the books. I love being swept away by the saga of the Poldark family. Would highly recommend!

Chrissyreadit I love the TV show also. 2mo

This book is well written, the characters were interesting, and I wanted to find out what happened next. But it is so patronizing towards women that I had trouble relaxing and enjoying it. I know it was written in 1945 and about the 1780s, but I can't do the submissive dumb fair maiden/ dominant male thing. And just when I would get into the story, the author would drop a line like " dark-faced, subhuman pygmies." Took my breath away.

Gissy I have this one😱 4mo
Eggbeater @Gissy I think it's worth the read, I am just coming at it from a feminist pov. 4mo
Gissy Ohhh😲But I'm not going to read it soon. I'm planning to move and most of the books are packed ☹️ 4mo

Closing out the first day of the #24B4Monday #readathon with a respectable time. I've never seen the PBS series based on Poldark, but I've heard it is also good. I am enjoying the book so far minus the animal cruelty. 😵 It's funny, I can read most horror without batting an eye, hurt a dog and I'm going to be sick.

Finished my third book in the early hours of the second day of the #24B42019 #Readathon

Now up to 9 hours 32 minutes.

GingerAntics I‘ve of course heard of the show, but are the books any good? They sound interesting. 11mo
Andrew65 @GingerAntics Yes it was a very enjoyable, although I feel much of it was setting it up for later books in the series. There are 12 books in total and good period historical fiction / saga. 11mo

Poldark returned tonight on PBS and O-M-Gee, I was at the edge of my seat, holding my pillow so as to cover my eyes or bite it in case things didn't turn out alright 😥😱
But that made me realize, I didn't think I could hate another character as much as I hate sadistic, cruel, hateful Dolores Umbridge but George Warleggan proved me wrong! Who do you think takes the crown for the most evil? #LoatheWarleggan

I almost quit this book early on, but decided to give it another couple of chapters. And now I have a new book boyfriend. Ross Poldark is damn near the perfect man. (But I'm happy to not live with 18th century medicine. The cures the doctors come up with in this book are as likely to kill you as any decease!)
The narrator did a really great job too. He even managed to sing as a female character without sounding silly.

Well hello, Mr. Poldark. I apparently need to watch this series. 😂

Such a satisfying historical drama, and right up my alley. Loved the setting (post-Revolutionary War Cornwall) and large cast of characters, going about their lives and inviting me out in to the minutiae. I loved big sweeping dramas with multiple generations and focusing on domestic life. This didn‘t have crazy plot points but was very fun to read and live in for awhile.

An intriguing and fast-paced novel about Cornwall in the late 1700s. Somewhat old-fashioned and sexist, of course, but I was riveted by Ross Poldark and Demelza and their community. I will be continuing on with the second book in the series, Demelza, and I‘ll probably watch the BBC show.
