The City of Mirrors
The City of Mirrors | Justin Cronin
In The Passage and The Twelve, Justin Cronin brilliantly imagined the fall of civilization and humanity's desperate fight to survive. Now all is quiet on the horizon--but does silence promise the nightmare's end or the second coming of unspeakable darkness? At last, this bestselling epic races to its breathtaking finale. The world we knew is gone. What world will rise in its place? The Twelve have been destroyed and the hundred-year reign of darkness that descended upon the world has ended. The survivors are stepping outside their walls, determined to build society anew--and daring to dream of a hopeful future. But far from them, in a dead metropolis, he waits: Zero. The First. Father of the Twelve. The anguish that shattered his human life haunts him, and the hatred spawned by his transformation burns bright. His fury will be quenched only when he destroys Amy--humanity's only hope, the Girl from Nowhere who grew up to rise against him. One last time light and dark will clash, and at last Amy and her friends will know their fate. Praise for Justin Cronin "One of those rare authors who work on two different levels, blending elegantly crafted literary fiction with cliff-hanging thrills."--Fort Worth Star-Telegram The Passage "Magnificent . . . Cronin has taken his literary gifts, and he has weaponized them. . . . The Passage can stand proudly next to Stephen King's apocalyptic masterpiece The Stand, but a closer match would be Cormac McCarthy's The Road."--Time "Read this book and the ordinary world disappears."--Stephen King "[A] big, engrossing read that will have you leaving the lights on late into the night."--The Dallas Morning News The Twelve "[A] literary superthriller, driven at once by character and plot."--The New York Times Book Review "Gripping . . . Cronin [introduces] eerie new elements to his masterful mythology."--The San Diego Union-Tribune "An undeniable and compelling epic . . . a complex narrative of flight and forgiveness, of great suffering and staggering loss, of terrible betrayals and incredible hope."--Milwaukee Journal Sentinel

After two trilogy chapters, the sequel even better than the first, this final book is sadly disappointing. With the real threat eliminated by the end of the second book, this entry feels more like a 600 page epilogue. The first third is a flashback to the human life of the main antagonist before the fall of humankind explored in the first installment. A slog to get through, as I found it impossible to care. The rest is equally pointless.

I did it! I feel like I‘ve run a marathon after these 3 audiobooks but there‘s a lot to like (and some not so much) about the trilogy. I love the concept and the vast world this author created (and the narrator deftly brought to life). I could have done with a few less characters (so hard to keep track of while listening) and it did feel dragged out at times. Also the epilogue wasn‘t needed. More new characters now 🙄? 🌟🌟🌟 1/2

TheNeverendingTBR I LOVE the first two books, but I got completely lost on this one. I guess it was the LONG wait between books. 3y
candc320 @TheNeverendingTBR I can totally see that! I listened to all 3 books in just the last few months and I was still confused! The first book was definitely my favorite. 3y

* This is nonsensical at best.
* Way too long. Could've been cut down by half.
* The absolute killer is the TWO-HUNDRED-PAGE-LONG Zero backstory. Dude. You are over 150 years old. Do you think you could possibly maybe get over your lost college love who married your buddy? No one cares. YOU ARE A VAMPIRE. EAT SOME PEOPLE OR SOMETHING. Ugh, so emo.
* Plot holes for daaaaaaays.
* Can we just talk about Soldier for a minute? How old is this horse?

TheKidUpstairs I whipped through The Passage and The Twelve, and this one i haven't been able to get through. I've tried three times! 3y

Satisfying conclusion to The Passage trilogy. I borrowed all 3 audiobooks from the library, and wound up buying all 3 as physical books because of the impact the story had on me. Scott Brick is an amazing narrator to boot. ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️

Final vampire 🧛🏻‍♀️ post-apocalypse novel in the trilogy♥️worth the heartache for sure. I feel like I will carry these characters around for awhile but I couldn‘t help but think of this final door stopper as more denouement than climax even though a lot more people died in this one 🤷‍♀️apple pie pictured, eaten largely for comfort

The best way to relax and enjoy your day - a cup of coffee and a couple of good books. 👓📖📚☕️

Cronin was fantastic. I love the story line. It's not the genre I usually read but was a good refresh. 👀
And I hope that I will also enjoy the other one - Sins of the house of Borgia by Sarah Bower. Must say that cover is absolutely amazing. 😍

Pretty satisfying end to the trilogy, but a little bloated in parts. Fanning‘s story needed to be told, but not sure if we needed his WHOLE life story. Also, not sure that not getting the girl you love (when you did have a chance and didn‘t go for it) is reason enough for wiping out the entire human race. I‘m just sayin‘! 😜 Glad Amy got to share her story so it would be remembered, but again—way too much info about those characters at the end.

I do what to also know about those who made it to pacific island.

Did Pim reveal about the former life on the island? How, when, and why did their ancestors leave the island? Did Sara or Lore try to seek out Michael, Amy, Alicia, and Peter or did they just know they would never see them again?

I wish that there would have been more to what happened to some characters.

Like Michael, when he left New York, did he make it to the English coast or not? I like to think that he sadly did not. He either got caught in a storm or maybe stayed at sea and died there. If he did make it, maybe there was nothing there to make a life of and left or if he stayed it wasn‘t an easy task to survive (food, weather, or other human resistance).

It‘s never fun saying goodbye to characters one has grown an attachment to but what an adventure it has been from the first book “The Passage” to this the last book of the trilogy.

I do wish there would have been a bit more to what happened to some characters but it is always to think what their lives turned out to be like.

Just finished this trilogy and am glad to report it has a very satisfying ending. I haven't heard anything about this author writing anything else so far, but would be all over that if anyone knows of anything else he has done? Planning to do?

BibliOphelia I follow him on Twitter. Think he‘s planning another fairly big book (not Passage trilogy big tho 😂), and he has said we may one day find out what happened to Michael. 5y

As I was watching The Passage (which is better than I expected) I remembered that I hadn‘t finished reading this trilogy. Well, WOW. How had I let that happen, given Cronin‘s incredible storytelling and excellent writing? I don‘t think there was a page I didn‘t savor, and Fanning‘s backstory was a book in itself. Now I want to go back and start the series from the beginning again, which I very seldom do. I miss this book already. #allthebooklove

While this was my least favorite of the series, the satisfying conclusion made it worth it. The middle third really dragged for me, with the characters separated for most of the book. I applaud Cronin allowing his characters to age, but I wasn‘t as interested in their lives as middle aged adults. But the ending really blew me away with its zoom out and then circle back to the central story.

A fantastic series overall.

What a beautiful ending to an epic trilogy! Cronin is a masterful storyteller and Scott Brick is a masterful narrator. I am both glad and sad that it's over. I will miss these characters so so much! A quote from the book sums up all my feels - "There is a joy so powerful it is like sadness...just as the opposite is also true."

After finishing The Twelve, I had to dive right in to The City of Mirrors. While I was disappointed in the fates of some of my favorite characters I still really enjoyed this last installment in The Passage Trilogy. This series was a total surprise to me as it is completely out of my wheelhouse, yet I was totally absorbed in this post apocalyptic world and in the lives of its characters. I have a book hangover from this one for sure.

Men, where do I start? As previously said, loved passage, liked twelve. Didn't need a third book but still waited patiently all those years.bought a copy first day it came out.took it on cruise and was ready for some entertainment.I've never been more bored in my life. There was no need for this book. Actually, I was insulted and mad and disappointed that this promising series tarnished it's legacy with lazy writing and an extremely boring story.

This series was great! I have to say I thought the first book, The Passage, was the best of the three, but I enjoyed all three. I felt like this one got a little bogged down in the backstory of the zero.

I loved the story of the ship, and Michael‘s storyline especially spoke to me.

This is the best vampire series I‘ve read in a long time.

Soubhiville @Gharv what did you think? 6y
Gharv @Soubhiville I completely agree! I liked The Passage best, but I did like the backstory in this one quite a lot. So I found myself struggling to finish this book, despite adoring the first two of the trilogy. There are moments of the same dazzling affective range and resonance; and Cronin's virtuosic gift for choreographing epic-scale action sequences is most evident on these pages. And yet, it didn't engross my like its predecessors; it was somehow both too much and not enough. Nonetheless, I thought it was a satisfying end to an exceptional story.
