“That‘s how the madness of the world tries to colonize you: from the outside in, forcing you to live in its reality.”

Oh my GOD. I just started the first installment of VanderMeer‘s eco-horror #SouthernReach trilogy last night, and I‘m hooked. Reminds me of Justin Cronin at his best. #AllEyes #audiobook #libby #nowreading #nowlistening

Flyers, this was good! I devoured it like a viral in a crowded diner (sorry 😱). I loved the first two books & this was a fitting end to the trilogy. The story of Fanning was a book in itself. I‘ve been completely hooked on the story & the characters throughout - this series will stay with me for a long time. If the rest of my 2018 reading is going to be as good as this I can‘t wait, although I predict a serious book hangover first! #alleyes

minkyb This really is an amazing trilogy. 6y
Victoria_Clyne I love this trilogy too. Though i haven't found the time to read City of Mirrors yet. 6y
JillR As you can see @Victoria_Clyne i thought this one was worth it to finish the trilogy off, despite its length! I enjoyed it more than The Twelve. @minkyb it is isn‘t it? 😍 6y
ChloeTallis I am taking these on holiday in a few months!! You have sold it. 6y
JillR @chloetallis you‘re so going to love them! (I hope...) 6y

The City of Mirrors | Justin Cronin
Mehso-so

So I found myself struggling to finish this book, despite adoring the first two of the trilogy. There are moments of the same dazzling affective range and resonance; and Cronin's virtuosic gift for choreographing epic-scale action sequences is most evident on these pages. And yet, it didn't engross my like its predecessors; it was somehow both too much and not enough. Nonetheless, I thought it was a satisfying end to an exceptional story.

"I thought of visiting my old apartment but discarded the idea; it was not, had never been, home. What is home to a monster? To anyone? There exists for each of us a geographical fulcrum, a place so saturated with memory that within its precinct the past is always present."

Wow. I heard that Cronin's trilogy dips here in the middle, but I respectfully disagree. I have developed such deep and profound emotional relationships to these characters that, frankly, it reminds me of how I felt twenty years ago, reading Harry Potter for the first time: they have become dear friends, and I will miss them when they're finally gone. Though not without flaws, these novels are majestically human. #AllEyes

nofutureparttwo Also: I've been reading these through a combination of paper and audio, and this probably goes without saying, but Scott Brick is one of the best narrators I've ever heard. Seriously, I could listen to him read the phone book and it would probably bring me to tears. 7y
Reggie I haven‘t read the 3rd one because as much as I love the first halves of the first 2 books, I absolutely dislike the set in the future second halves. But this one had me crying at work. Especially when the ex army guy found the brother while the bombs were being dropped saying, “I‘m here.” And there‘s also a special place in my heart for the slow bus driver who drives the hell out of the bus into the horde. 6y
nofutureparttwo @Reggie I know!! Had me crying at work too. This book in particular stayed with me a long time. 6y

Cronin's horror trilogy appears to be an epic of Dickensian or Homeric proportion, dear readers, and I am *so* along for the ride. At times it felt like if Cormac McCarthy had written Station Eleven. Cronin's prose is so masterful as to be nearly transparent—I feel so engulfed by the story that I forget I'm reading.
I should go to bed, but I don't know if I can resist starting the next audiobook.
All eyes, dear readers! #AllEyes.
