The Illustrated Jane Eyre
The Illustrated Jane Eyre | Charlotte Bront, Dame Darcy
The creator of Meat Cake presents an off-kilter illustrated interpretation of Charlotte Bront's Victorian classic, in a volume that features darkly elegant drawings that follow themes of human depravity, despair, and ultimate redemption. Original.

As someone who lives with ADHD, I don‘t often find characters with traits like mine. Helen Burns is an exception. She daydreams, struggles in school, & can‘t stay organized. The scene where a teacher writes “slattern” (a dirty, untidy woman) on a piece of paper & makes Helen wear it on her forehead made me 😢. It shows the shame and stigma surrounding ADHD, especially for women. I can‘t wait to read more!

Ms_T The way Helen is treated is shocking. 3d

I‘m rereading Jane Eyre for the umpteenth time (via Audible so I guess it‘s a re-listen) and this book STILL has me in awe every time I dive in. It‘s my absolute all time favourite classic ❤️

I ❤ this. It makes me think back to film studies, when we would discuss how movies typically presented active males but passive females (that's finally changing). It's so striking to see the concept laid out so plainly in this classic: a female character who wants to be active, but recognizes how society restricts that. This is why female voices matter in fiction of any medium, from any period. #activefemale 😊

Wait a second... is Harry Potter secretly a Jane Eyre retelling?!
This is my first time reading Jane Eyre and I am really enjoying it. The orphan being wildly mistreated by her aunt, while she dotes over her big bully of a son seems awfully familiar, Rowling 😅

laurenslibrary One of my favorite books! 1w

HOTPock3tt I hadn‘t even noticed the comparison when I read this book last year. Quite true 🤔 5d
ShyBookOwl @HOTPock3tt it might have stood out to me more because I also only read and saw HP for the first time pretty recently (maybe 2 or 3 yrs ago). It struck me and I thought it was a fun comparison 5d

I remember loving The Giver, I read the graphic Novel this year. I also read Jane Eyre for the first time when I was around 12. It became my favorite book, still is, and I reread it every year or two. #wintergames #tmskellington @Crimson613

Jane eyre was a tranquil and beautiful book to read; I found myself transported to a much more simple era but could readily relate to the emotions experienced by the narrator. Whilst incredibly progressive for its time, it was fascinating to learn about the expectations of women wrt marriage. I was not entirely satisfied with the ending, but overall really enjoyed reading this story. A romantic novel with a strong female lead.

This copy of Jane Eyre was published in 1943 and I bought it at a second hand book store in Boulder, CO when I was in college in 2007 or so. It took me quite a long time to get around to reading it, but I'm so glad I finally did. It was creepy, gothic, romantic (if you can ignore the manipulation and gaslighting), and shockingly modern in it's tone and prose. I absolutely loved it ❤️

“Till morning...I was tossed on a buoyant but unquiet sea, where billows of trouble rolled under surges of joy. I thought...I saw beyond its wild waters a shore...now and then a freshening gale, wakened by hope, bore my spirit triumphantly towards the bourne: but I could not reach it...a counteracting breeze...continually drove me back. Sense would resist delirium: judgment would warn passion. Too feverish to rest, I rose as soon as day dawned.”

Page 172/433, unfortunately somehow this magnificent book became boring the moment she became a governess and met our leading man. If a tv show became boring i would move on after a couple episodes left me uninvested; so, i will treat this book the same way, save myself some many boring/frustrated hours, read a different book, and come back to this when i am ready and refreshed and having forgotten the feeling of boredom.

EricJames1 I decided to change the channel to Love in the Time of Cholera and Crime and Punishment and was able to return to Jane Eyre refreshed and with greater speed and vivacity than before. Now on page 182 (edited) 4mo
