Rosemary and Rue (Toby Daye Book 1)
Rosemary and Rue (Toby Daye Book 1) | Seanan McGuire
The first instalment of the highly praised Toby Daye series. The world of Faerie never disappeared; it merely went into hiding, continuing to exist parallel to our own. Secrecy is the key to Faerie's survival: but no secret can be kept forever, and when the fae and mortal worlds collide, changelings are born. Outsiders from birth, these children spend their lives fighting for the respect of their immortal relations. Or in the case of October 'Toby' Daye, rejecting the fae completely. Toby has retreated into a 'normal' life - spending her nights stocking shelves at a San Francisco grocery store and her days asleep in her downtown apartment. But when Countess Evening Winterroseis murdered, Toby finds herself drawn abruptly back into the world she thought she'd left behind. It's going to take everything she's got just to stay alive, and the stakes are higher than anyone has guessed . . .

Humble Bundle has a Kobo ebooks bundle of most of the October Daye
and InCryptid series! For those of you who don't have Kobo (like me) you can download them to Adobe Digital Editions, which will turn them into EPUBs.
Supposedly you can then put them on your Kindle, but I haven't gotten that far yet.

This popped up on a number of Recommended lists for urban fantasy. Interesting concept. I am always amazed by the creativity people have to come up with these kinds of stories. If you are in to urban fantasy, I think you will like this. I'm on the library waitlist for the next book in the series.

I love McGuire‘s Wayward Children series and have had my eye on this Hugo-nominated urban fantasy series for a bit. Even though most reviews say it doesn‘t get great until a few books in, I enjoyed this as is! Might be the fae fiefdoms being set in my native SF Bay Area, but I thought the world set-up totally fantastic & intriguing. Toby is complicated and situations can get dark. I look forward to tearing through the series now that I am hooked!

I finished several more short stories about Tybalt, King of Cats, from the October Daye series. I've now completed 15 of the 17 published ones featuring Tybalt and I'm ready to return to the main series. It's astounding how prolific Seanan McGuire (a.k.a. Mira Grant) is!

Currently at 9 hours and 20 minutes for the #20in4 readathon.

I finally have started this much loved urban fantasy series. I enjoyed our main character, she is a down on her luck changling detective who has incredibly bad luck. Though a little slow, I have heard the series gets really great so I am intrigued to continue. 3.5⭐️

Another series by the awesome Seanan McGuire that doesn't let down. Quite different than Wayward Children series which I love but still a great read: a blend of mystery and fantasy, non-stop action that doesn't let down, great world and character building. A pick!

@PuddleJumper: this is January #49 #Roll100 pick on my list.
@TheAromaOfBooks: I was able to advance in the #PromptMaze with this read.
Thank you both for awesome challenges!

PuddleJumper Oh, that does sound fun! Glad you enjoyed it 2y
claudiuo @PuddleJumper Thanks for this challenge, it makes me try to read more! 2y
TheAromaofBooks Yes!!! I've advanced three spaces and and have been stuck for there for the last couple of books. I don't know what I was thinking with some of these prompts 😂 2y

TheAromaofBooks I'm going to see how it goes. I may come up with a second one for the second half of the year. Or I may still be stuck on square 3 by then 😂 2y
BookmarkTavern Yay! I also love the Incryptid books! I hope you enjoy them! 2y
claudiuo @TheAromaofBooks What? I just finished the maze! I thought there is something wrong and last square sent me to I5 cause there is no I5; except there is and it is the ending 😁 It seems I was very lucky and the selections I made took me there in 3 steps: A2 -> A5 -> F5 -> I5.
I will retrace my steps, read another book for an already done cell and go in a different direction!
Thanks a lot for the fun!
2y
TheAromaofBooks Nice!!! That is awesome!! I wasn't sure how many steps there are... the only “planning“ I did was to try and make sure there were same number chances to get sent to each cell (so I think I ended up with 3 as the magic number - of course - so three different cells send you to A2; 3 cells send you to A3; etc). That's awesome that you found the finish!!! 2y
claudiuo @TheAromaofBooks I love the fact that you provided for more than one possibility in each cell, it makes for more fun. Now that I finished by starting with a nonfiction in A2, I will start all over with either a Fairytale retelling or a Romance and see where that gets me. I really love it! Thank you so much! 2y

I can't remember the last time a book has left me this cold. McGuire is a prolific and popular author, and this particular book has been purported as an excellent place to begin with her. This book was flipping awful.

esurient The writing was downright grating, with my loathed first-person POV and frequent blocks of infodumping. The story pacing was bizarre, with the prologue rocketing from 'and then the heroine was a fish' to 'huge timeskip, now she's a grocery clerk,' which seemed an especially cumbersome way to introduce backstory. I thought the heroine's name was fucking twee, I even hated the cover -- I find McGrath's art vastly overused in the market. 3y
esurient Heck no, I will not be reading more in this series. 3y
esurient Ugh, I do remember: it was Catfishing on Catnet. So disappointing. 3y

Clare-Dragonfly I found this book rather disappointing as well. IIRC, I only finished it because it was all I had on a day of many short travels. 3y

Although I didn't find the writing as strong as some of McGuire's newer books, it was still a great start to an urban fantasy series. I loved all the creatures she introduced and I hope we see more off them.

October Daye grew on me as the story developed, and I will definitely read more in the series.

Loved this one! It was my first McGuire, so I guess I have a new author to add to my TBR. Have already started No 2 in the series, actually🥴

So why did I love it? Well...I liked the MC, who is kick ass, but also fallible. The book is set in a fae setting and I love fae elements in my books, really liked McGuire‘s version too! And I thought the storyline was good. Strong and complex, but not too much so.

This book has a great way of melding heavy Fantasy into an urban setting. October (aka "Toby") is a brilliant character who gets into all kinds of trouble.

You'll laugh, you'll cringe, and you'll keep reading to see how she'll get out of the mess she made this time.

This was the perfect book to get me through a few nights of jet lag. Honestly, what‘s not to love about a murder mystery set in the world of Faerie? Toby Daye, a changling who doesn‘t quite fit in either the human or Faerie world, falls under a curse & will die if she doesn‘t solve the murder of Countess Evening Winterrose. The mystery wasn‘t hard to solve but Toby is an engaging character & I enjoyed the story. I‘ll definitely read more.

1. Arnold, MO (just south of St Louis)
2. Sci-fi/fantasy, YA, thriller, historical fiction, nonfiction, memoir, poetry
...it's really easier to list what ISN'T a favorite genre
3. Seanan McGuire, Taylor Jenkins Reid, there are about a million others
4. Rosemary and Rue. Lately I have been also frequently recommending Where the Crawdads Sing and No Exit

EchoLogical I'll bite. What genres AREN'T your favorites? LoL 5y
rjsthumbelina @EchoLogical I don't read as much romance or mysteries that don't have much of a thriller aspect. I don't read cozy mysteries, as a general rule. I never read books categorized as erotica or travel. Or cookbooks. But that's about it! Lol. I have worked at a bookstore part time for several years, and it has done wonders for opening up my horizons as far as what I like to read! 5y

I love this author, and this series has great potential, but this one just didn‘t grab me the way her books normally do. It was non-stop action, but the story development was slow at the same time. I will check out the next one though, to see if it gets better. This was my book from the blacklist of a favorite author for #MMDchallenge

Carolyn11215 @TommieMarie74 I noticed you stacked. Yay! As is the case with many series, this gets better with each book so hope you continue reading past the initial book. I adore Toby and the other characters she develops in future books! 6y
TommieMarie74 @Carolyn11215 I‘ve heard this title before and found it intriguing but never really thought any more of it. After reading how much you love it, I really think I should give the series a try. Usually with series, unless the first book is just horrid, I try to give it at least two books before I make a decision. Because, like you said, series often get better with each book. Thanks for setting this series back in my sights. 😊 (edited) 6y

My current re-read! I love this series (it has the best world-building ever), but it's been a couple of years and I totally don't remember enough details to get the most out of the recent installments, so it's time to brush up on the Toby Daye universe. This one is noticeably weaker than later books, but I do remember that the quality dramatically improves around An Artificial Night, so I'm really looking forward to the rest of this re-read.
