The Outsiders
The Outsiders | SE Hinton
A heroic story of friendship and belonging No one ever said life was easy. But Ponyboy is pretty sure that he's got things figured out. He knows that he can count on his brothers, Darry and Sodapop. And he knows that he can count on his friendstrue friends who would do anything for him, like Johnny and Two-Bit. And when it comes to the Socsa vicious gang of rich kids who enjoy beating up on "greasers" like him and his friendshe knows that he can count on them for trouble. But one night someone takes things too far, and Ponyboy's world is turned upside down... Written over forty-five years ago, The Outsiders is a dramatic and enduring work of fiction. S. E. Hinton's classic story of a boy who finds himself on the outskirts of regular society remains as powerful today as it was the day it was first published. "The Outsiders transformed young-adult fiction from a genre mostly about prom queens, football players and high school crushes to one that portrayed a darker, truer world." The New York Times "Taut with tension, filled with drama." The Chicago Tribune "[A] classic coming-of-age book." Philadelphia Daily News "What it's like to live lonely and unwanted and cornered by circumstance...There is rawness and violence here, but honest hope, too." National Observer A New York Herald Tribune Best Teenage Book A Chicago Tribune Book World Spring Book Festival Honor Book An ALA Best Book for Young Adults Winner of the Massachusetts Children's Book Award

Another modern classic. This book always reminds me of my dad and his brothers. I can see why so many middle schoolers love this book bc it deals with (very sensitively and lowkey subtly) living in circumstances that you want to rise above. Even tho it‘s sad as shit I think this book makes middle schoolers more sensitive

Last read of 2023! Technically it was a reread but it‘s been a few years. Still good, still made me cry. #publishedbeforeyouwereborn (1967, I believe, I was born in 70). #rushathonchristmaschallenge @Andrew65

This is my new favorite book, so raw and really made me take a look at how messed up society is and I have begun looking at the world and people in general with a new view. Love it so much and for once the movie was almost exactly the same as the book which made me happy. Also Dally is the best character by far.

1. This week.
2. The Outsiders by S.E. Hinton always says school setting to me because my 7th grade teacher read this to us in 1972, bleeping out the bad words. 😄❤️

Wow, I just finished this book yesterday, and it was probably one of the best books I have read this year. This book shows the constant battle between the Socials, the higher class, and the Greasers, the lower class, in the 1960s through the eyes of a 14 year old “Greaser” named Ponyboy. I will definitely be looking for more books by this author!

This might end up as one of my new favorite books. The characters are entertaining and feel incredibly real. Their relationships with each other make you want to root for them, and the end is absolutely heartbreaking.

The outsiders is a book about a 14 year old boy named pony boy. It talks about his struggles with the right and wrong and society, and he happens to believe that he is an outsider he is in a gang called the greasers, and they have a problem with the socs I really liked this book because it was fun to read and easy to understand it tells a good story as well The main theme of the outsiders is identity versus group identity.

MissYaremcio Thank you for the review Hannah! For Litsy post one, you were missing the image and I would have liked a bit more with your theme establishment. Otherwise, good work. 4/6 12mo

Leniverse Yes, Oldboy! The Korean original, right? I mean, as much as I like Spike Lee and the entire cast, that remake was beyond redundant. 1y
jlhammar Yoko Ogawa - great choice! Love her books. I had a different Sharon Van Etten song on mine (One Day). She's so good. 1y
vivastory @Leniverse Def. the original! It belongs with other films where I consider the remake to be superfluous & haven't bothered watching, despite how much I might like the director (Girl w/ the Dragon Tattoo & remake of Let the Right One In both come to mind) 1y
vivastory @jlhammar Ogawa is fantastic. I have read only a couple of her books, but they were both favorites. Sharon Van Etten is def a favorite. 3 of my favorite songs of last year were by her. 1y
Leniverse @vivastory I have watched both of those, and the latter especially is gorgeous cinematography but completely fails to capture the gritty feel of the novel (or original movie). But one I refuse to watch is The Departed. 1y

“ Stay gold Ponyboy. Stay gold.” One of my all time favorite books and seasons.

I‘m Getting into the fall mood even though it‘s still in the 90‘s here in the Alabama beaches. Beautiful day!

I celebrated by making a new front door wreath and adding a little fall decor to my bike and window frame display. I thought about adding a fake book and may do that next. What do you think?

From The Oklahoman, a partial list of books that are banned or could be banned in the state of OK. And also they got Harper Lee's name wrong. Sometimes, I hate it here.

"Of all of us, Dally was the one I liked least. He didn't have Soda's understanding or dash, or Two Bit's humor, or even Darry's superman qualities. But I realized that these three appealed to me because they were like the heroes in the novels I read. Dally was real. I liked my books and clouds and sunsets. Dally was so real he scared me."

Our purchases from the Lansing specialty book show! A found a Pratchett 1e he didn't already have and another fantasy novel. I grabbed one of the Gwen Frostic books I'm missing, the signed Hank Green, and the earliest copy of The Outsiders I've ever seen in person. Because I'm a functional human being the moment I picked it up off the shelf I started bawling. 😅🥰

I never read this one before, nor had I seen the movie, and I liked it a lot! Pretty cool that the author added a short intro saying SHE was only 16 when she finished this book, and that she wrote it because there was no proper representation of teenagers around that time. Wild!

CogsOfEncouragement I was so surprised to find out that S. E. stands for Susan Eloise. 2y

Well written, great characters, important messages, and deep emotionality. Truly one of the best books I‘ve read this year. If you‘ve never read this book, definitely check it out. And give the movie a view if you haven‘t. It‘s really good too! 🙂
