Made for Love | Alissa Nutting
146 posts | 85 read | 1 reading | 176 to read
From one of our most exciting and provocative young writers, a poignant, riotously funny story of how far some will go for love and how far some will go to escape it.Hazel has just moved into a trailer park of senior citizens, with her father and Diane his extremely lifelike sex doll as her roommates. Life with Hazel s father is strained at best, but her only alternative seems even bleaker. She s just run out on her marriage to Byron Gogol, CEO and founder of Gogol Industries, a monolithic corporation hell-bent on making its products and technologies indispensable in daily life. For over a decade, Hazel put up with being veritably quarantined by Byron in the family compound, her every movement and vital sign tracked. But when he demands to wirelessly connect the two of them via brain chips in a first-ever human mind-meld, Hazel decides what was once merely irritating has become unbearable. The world she escapes into is a far cry from the dry and clinical bubble she s been living in, a world populated with a whole host of deviant oddballs. As Hazel tries to carve out a new life for herself in this uncharted territory, Byron is using the most sophisticated tools at his disposal to find her and bring her home. His threats become more and more sinister, and Hazel is forced to take drastic measures in order to find a home of her own and free herself from Byron s virtual clutches once and for all. Perceptive and compulsively readable, Made for Love is at once an absurd, raunchy comedy and a dazzling, profound mediation on marriage, monogamy, and family."

Completely bonkers! 😲😂 But, I really liked it.

I wanted something different, something funny, but also quirky and this was perfect. I've never read this author before but I will definitely try something else by her now.

The pacing is uneven at times but there is great commentary mixed in with the wacky humor.

aperfectmjk Wow, they made this into a series? I wasn't a big fan of this. After I read it, it immediately went in my Free Little Library. 🤣 6mo

First, the cover 🤩🤩 Nutting writes wonderfully nutty books. While I didn‘t like this as much as Tampa, her voice and POV are distinctive and interesting.

Hazel has a problem. She‘s arrived on her dad‘s doorstep because her husband Byron, a tech CEO, threatened to install a chip in her head to merge their thoughts. Her dad wants privacy, especially since he just got a sex robot. With comically horrible coping skills, she fights to leave Bryon.

CoffeeAndABook Wow 🤩 that does sound nuts!! But the intriguing kind of nuts! Stacked 📚 2y

What a breath of fresh air this book is and a mind f*#k! Thanks for putting it on my radar @Reggie
It‘s a cautionary tale about letting technology take things too far in our world. It also acknowledges that women are somebodies not somebody‘s. This was weird and wonderful! 🐬🐬🐬

Did you guys see that they adapted this as a series on HBO Max? Boggles the mind... reposting a pic from when I first read it & I received a matching coffee cup from @saresmoore 😂

BarbaraBB I wonder how they‘ll be able to adopt it 🐬. It‘s one of those books I can still visualize vividly! Great cup by the way! 3y
vivastory @BarbaraBB I think I might check it out tomorrow. I might have to dig out my cup & have coffee while doing so! 🐬 3y
Megabooks @BarbaraBB you and I have talked about my visual memory before, but I read this at such a difficult time in my life, I hardly remember it. Tampa, however, whoa. Thanks for the heads up, Scott. I‘m seriously considering getting hbo max, even if only for the documentaries! 3y
See All 13 Comments
vivastory @Megabooks I think it's worth it. I have it as an add-on channel through Amazon prime. Their documentaries are fantastic! 3y
Megabooks Right now I just pay for Prime, Hulu, and (as a gift to my parents) Paramount Plus. I glom onto their Netflix, but I think I‘d prefer having HBO to Paramount, but I promised to pay for it through 2021. I‘ll have to think about it 🤔🤔 3y
Jess I watched the first three episodes last night (just 25-30 minutes each) and what a wild ride. So far the show is just following Hazel and Gogol‘s story line, which is crazy enough. I‘m interested to see if they will adapt the dolphin story line too. Love the mug! 3y
saresmoore This reminds me of the days when I browsed thrift stores for books! I have to say, I kind of miss the thrill of the hunt. 🧐 3y
TheLibrarian @Megabooks If you do an add-on for HBO in the future, do it through Hulu. Last time I heard, you can‘t get HBO Max access through Prime. Not sure if that‘s still the case but I switched my add-on to Hulu. That way you still have access to some HBO content through Hulu and still can log into HBO Max for even more content! I‘m also paying for Paramount for my parents but prefer HBO! (edited) 3y
vivastory @TheLibrarian @Megabooks Yeah I should have clarified that I got hbo as an add-on through Amazon and then accessed it via ps4 3y
Kimberlone I watched the first three episodes...enjoying it so far! 3y
vivastory @Kimberlone Glad to hear that. I'm happy that they're shorter episodes too 3y
NikkiM5 I didn‘t realize this was a book. I binged three episodes yesterday. stacked 3y

Did anyone else see this book was made into a series? It‘s so strange I can‘t even imagine, but am really intrigued...

Reggie Yes, I keep thinking how strange it‘s going to be onscreen. Especially with the dad and the doll and the guy and the dolphin. It looks like it‘s focusing mainly on the main character and her marriage, though. Who knows. 3y

If you want unexpected dolphin erotica, look no further. In a world of remakes and recycled tropes, Alissa Nutting‘s writing is consistently original and amazingly funny. The speeches her characters make in the protagonist‘s fantasies are raw satires, sharp and ironic in that they showcase reality posing as fantasy.

This book is about human connection or more precise, a lack of it. The characters are attracted to things like sex dolls, dolphins, waking over the dead and technology gadgets but have no clue how to connect to eachother. This leads to a lot of funny situations with relatively normal Hazel, the MC, in the midst of them. In the end however it‘s tragic-comical at the most.

squirrelbrain Yes, I totally agree Barbara. My husband has the day off on Tuesday for his birthday and he had mentioned going to York for a day out. We‘ll see what the ‘social distancing‘ rules say by then anyway, but I quite fancy a trip to the beach instead.... 4y

Megabooks @BarbaraBB I‘m doing okay. Occasional weird bouts of pain, but tweaking my meds seemed to help. Otherwise I‘m just worried about my dad not staying at home. I think mom and I are going to attach a leash to him. 4y
BarbaraBB @Megabooks I‘m glad your meds seem to help. Your dad on a leash 😉, that makes me smile. Can‘t you convince him to avoid places with many people? 4y
Megabooks He has been home all day today, and I have never seen a more mopey, miserable dad. ☹️ on the other hand, mom is forcing him to clean out Christmas decorations, so maybe I know why he‘s so into leaving! 😂😂 4y
BarbaraBB @Megabooks well it is about time to get rid of the Christmas decorations 😂. Maybe promise him a walk afterwards 😉😘 4y
Megabooks @BarbaraBB oh we‘re not talking about the small amount of decorations we use each year. My parents are cleaning out the ones my mom had in her classroom in the 60s, my great-grandparents nativity scene...like deep attic cleaning. Another attempt to read We Cast a Shadow this week for the #ToB2020. Also lined up I have Made for Love, to use for both #Booked2020 and #ATY2020.

Welp, I loved it. Lots of reviews focused on the dolphin-love, but I thought the dystopian themes of tech-gone-wrong were interesting, too. (Read about Elon Musk‘s brain chip plans the same week I read this book, and how thousands of Swedes are using their hand as a credit card, health monitor and key card via an implanted chip.) Hilarious, disturbing and sweet book all at the same time.

Megabooks I love Alyssa Nutting. She‘s an auto-buy for me! 5y
Reggie Her father and the doll was crazy. The way the dr took out the fixation in Jasper‘s head and made him love her only to break his heart, really angered me. Such manipulation. I get it, men do it all the time. HE did it all the time. Still didn‘t make it right. 5y

I read half of the book, and had lots of witty (if I do say so myself) markups in it for #LMPBC... but then my darling puppy destroyed it (and my purple pen) when I left it on the end table for an hour unattended. So I finished on audio and am choosing a new book to send. 🤷🏻‍♀️

This book is weird, subversive, and hilarious. Alissa Nutting is not afraid to go to the strange, and she‘s not for everyone, but she‘s definitely for me.

Just finished this extremely weird and quirky novel; I gave it 4⭐️. There was plenty of incisive observational humor and none of the characters could really be considered conventionally likable. I thought the writing was very skillful and the plot moved quickly, but the end got very anticlimactic and sometimes things veered from interestingly absurd into silly. If you don't mind a lot of strangeness, you might enjoy this one.

This book is just so weird and wonderful and brilliant. I‘ve been reading it on and off since #24in48 . And it‘s because I never wanted it to end. The last time I remember feeling similarly was with Katherine Dunn‘s Geek Love. This book is for people who like things odd and quirky and far from politically correct. It isn‘t classically feminist in a Roxane Gay kinda way, but it challenges the idea of women as property without saying it outright.

Alternate Review:

Call me crazy, call me a prude, but I never got past the fact that Hazel‘s elderly father (passionately! continuously! & openly!) stuck it in sex toy dolls (PLURAL), and the discussion of his “fluids.”

The end.

monalyisha Also, if you‘re reading along & you‘re thinking to yourself, “I just have to get through this one chapter. These two chapters. How long can she talk about old dudes & sex toy dolls?” The answer is: FOREVER. FOR THE WHOLE BOOK. Diane (the doll) is a major character, with about as much feeling & warmth (more, depending on your chosen interpretations of those words) as pretty much all of the human characters.

Mehso-so

Masquerading as “realistic fiction” (with the world‘s most infinitesimal dash of sci-fi/dystopia), the characters & situations in “Made for Love” are too ridiculous to actually conjure empathy & connection. So while I alternately tittered & recoiled from certain tidbits of writing, I never felt drawn in or wholly emotionally-invested.

*Cont‘d in the comments below.👇🏻

monalyisha 1/2: Nutting has a firm grasp on observational humor. She notices the comedy in every tiny detail of life (down to the expiration dates on boxes of cereal in the kitchen pantry). All of this *noticing* makes her narrative feel almost stream-of-consciousness. I think I‘d love her as a stand-up comedian, but her book didn‘t totally do it for me. 6y
monalyisha 2/2: Is it morally terrible for me to say that I enjoyed this book more after Hazel‘s father died? Probably. But that actually suits the tone of the whole thing kind-of perfectly. 🤷‍♀️ I will say that I enjoyed the ending and its message: “Whatever you do, DON‘T fake it ‘til you make it. That way leads to non-consensual brain implants, manure fields, and traumatic dolphin sex. Or, y‘know, something like that. For God‘s sake, just be real.” 😳 (edited) 6y

“A single beam of light shot down from the ceiling to illuminate a toilet. It looked like the toilet was floating in the middle of outer space... Hazel walked over & sat down on it, disturbed to find that her pee didn‘t make a sound; what did make a sound was a whoosh & a rush of heat between her legs upon her urine stream‘s conclusion. Like she‘d just been wiped dry by a sunbeam.”

I‘m not crazy... this sounds kinda nice, right? 😆🚽☀️

Kaye It sounds more to me like she took a hit of Meth before hitting the toilet. Odd. 😳 6y

I picked this up because Rainbow Rowell recommended it. I can tell that I‘m eventually going to find it really funny & engaging... but right now, it‘s suuuuper difficult to get through the first few pages of “my elderly dad bought a sex doll & wants me to recognize her personhood.” 🙈🤮😆 SOS!

swishandflick Just wait until you get to the 🐬 stuff 😂 6y
monalyisha @swishandflick As long as the dolphin stuff (read: dolphin sex?) isn‘t coupled with dad sex, I have no fear. 😆 (edited) 6y
monalyisha PS @swishandflick have I ever told you that I really thought your username was a Legally Blonde reference for more than a hot minute? 😂 #bendandsnap 6y

This cat is just so weird. The smaller the platform, the better! #catsoflitsy

Weekend TBR: After a crazy busy December, I'm spending time on the Northern California coast reflecting on 2017. I think that fans of a Carl Hiaasen romp will enjoy this fun book. Happy New Year 🎉🎉

I liked a few books that came out this year; Most notably- Forest Dark and Made for Love, but I didn't have a favorite. #BookOfTheYear #ReindeerReads

This book was really strange and slightly uncomfortable at times.

Nutting's book is full of eccentric characters that find themselves in progressively more outrageous situations as they search for meaning & companionship. For all of the wildly imaginative scenes brimming with gallows humor, there is social commentary. Technology's dominance of our social & personal lives is examined, yet the outrageousness of the situations undercuts any meaningful & lasting critique. 👇

vivastory Unapologetically outlandish, very much in the spirit of Chuck Palahniuk. 6y
mrozzz Oooohh comparisons to Palahniuk will definitely pique my interest.... 6y
batsy That dolphin 😂 6y
Reggie When I read this I had quit Facebook the month before and it felt like Facebook was quickly becoming a stalker. E-mails saying, hey so and so just updated, I would get texts saying hey so and so just posted a pic. Lol technology just wouldn‘t let me quit. So this book made me laugh a lot. Also, have you read Tampa, by her? I think she has a lot to say about parents, in both books. Great review!!! 6y
vivastory @Reggie This is my first Nutting. Tampa is on my TBR, I'm also interested in her short stories. She has a new collection of stories being released next year. 6y

Weird and wonderful story about attraction and desire and free will. Hazel escapes her tech-billionaire husband to move back in with father, who has just started a new relationship with a sex doll. And don‘t even get me started on the side character with a dolphin problem.

TheWordJar Sounds...interesting? 😳 6y

4. Favorite Book Cover of 2017: Made for Love

Just loved how retro and fun this cover is. Definitely against the grain of what‘s popular in book covers today. Goes well with the wacko story inside. Dolphins play an unexpectedly large part in the plot of the book.
