From one of our most exciting and provocative young writers, a poignant, riotously funny story of how far some will go for love and how far some will go to escape it.Hazel has just moved into a trailer park of senior citizens, with her father and Diane his extremely lifelike sex doll as her roommates. Life with Hazel s father is strained at best, but her only alternative seems even bleaker. She s just run out on her marriage to Byron Gogol, CEO and founder of Gogol Industries, a monolithic corporation hell-bent on making its products and technologies indispensable in daily life. For over a decade, Hazel put up with being veritably quarantined by Byron in the family compound, her every movement and vital sign tracked. But when he demands to wirelessly connect the two of them via brain chips in a first-ever human mind-meld, Hazel decides what was once merely irritating has become unbearable. The world she escapes into is a far cry from the dry and clinical bubble she s been living in, a world populated with a whole host of deviant oddballs. As Hazel tries to carve out a new life for herself in this uncharted territory, Byron is using the most sophisticated tools at his disposal to find her and bring her home. His threats become more and more sinister, and Hazel is forced to take drastic measures in order to find a home of her own and free herself from Byron s virtual clutches once and for all. Perceptive and compulsively readable, Made for Love is at once an absurd, raunchy comedy and a dazzling, profound mediation on marriage, monogamy, and family."

Welp, I loved it. Lots of reviews focused on the dolphin-love, but I thought the dystopian themes of tech-gone-wrong were interesting, too. (Read about Elon Musk‘s brain chip plans the same week I read this book, and how thousands of Swedes are using their hand as a credit card, health monitor and key card via an implanted chip.) Hilarious, disturbing and sweet book all at the same time.

Megabooks I love Alyssa Nutting. She‘s an auto-buy for me! 7mo
Reggie Her father and the doll was crazy. The way the dr took out the fixation in Jasper‘s head and made him love her only to break his heart, really angered me. Such manipulation. I get it, men do it all the time. HE did it all the time. Still didn‘t make it right. 7mo
Leelee.reads @Reggie Right? Lots of interesting aspects to consider in this book. 7mo

I read half of the book, and had lots of witty (if I do say so myself) markups in it for #LMPBC... but then my darling puppy destroyed it (and my purple pen) when I left it on the end table for an hour unattended. So I finished on audio and am choosing a new book to send. 🤷🏻‍♀️

This book is weird, subversive, and hilarious. Alissa Nutting is not afraid to go to the strange, and she‘s not for everyone, but she‘s definitely for me.

Current work lunch book. This book is hitting a sweet spot I didn't know I had. Preposterous/weird yet firmly rooted in reality. Darkly hilarious. Reminds me, in feel, of My Year of Rest and Relaxation. Trying to parse it out over my lunch breaks but will probably cave and take it home on Friday. Would love to hear any recs in the same vein 🙂🐬💻😯🌴

Just finished this extremely weird and quirky novel; I gave it 4⭐️. There was plenty of incisive observational humor and none of the characters could really be considered conventionally likable. I thought the writing was very skillful and the plot moved quickly, but the end got very anticlimactic and sometimes things veered from interestingly absurd into silly. If you don't mind a lot of strangeness, you might enjoy this one.

This book is just so weird and wonderful and brilliant. I‘ve been reading it on and off since #24in48 . And it‘s because I never wanted it to end. The last time I remember feeling similarly was with Katherine Dunn‘s Geek Love. This book is for people who like things odd and quirky and far from politically correct. It isn‘t classically feminist in a Roxane Gay kinda way, but it challenges the idea of women as property without saying it outright.

Alternate Review:

Call me crazy, call me a prude, but I never got past the fact that Hazel‘s elderly father (passionately! continuously! & openly!) stuck it in sex toy dolls (PLURAL), and the discussion of his “fluids.”

The end.

monalyisha Also, if you‘re reading along & you‘re thinking to yourself, “I just have to get through this one chapter. These two chapters. How long can she talk about old dudes & sex toy dolls?” The answer is: FOREVER. FOR THE WHOLE BOOK. Diane (the doll) is a major character, with about as much feeling & warmth (more, depending on your chosen interpretations of those words) as pretty much all of the human characters.

Mehso-so

Masquerading as “realistic fiction” (with the world‘s most infinitesimal dash of sci-fi/dystopia), the characters & situations in “Made for Love” are too ridiculous to actually conjure empathy & connection. So while I alternately tittered & recoiled from certain tidbits of writing, I never felt drawn in or wholly emotionally-invested.

*Cont‘d in the comments below.👇🏻

monalyisha 1/2: Nutting has a firm grasp on observational humor. She notices the comedy in every tiny detail of life (down to the expiration dates on boxes of cereal in the kitchen pantry). All of this *noticing* makes her narrative feel almost stream-of-consciousness. I think I‘d love her as a stand-up comedian, but her book didn‘t totally do it for me. 2y
monalyisha 2/2: Is it morally terrible for me to say that I enjoyed this book more after Hazel‘s father died? Probably. But that actually suits the tone of the whole thing kind-of perfectly. 🤷‍♀️ I will say that I enjoyed the ending and its message: “Whatever you do, DON‘T fake it ‘til you make it. That way leads to non-consensual brain implants, manure fields, and traumatic dolphin sex. Or, y‘know, something like that. For God‘s sake, just be real.” 😳 (edited) 2y

Nutting's book is full of eccentric characters that find themselves in progressively more outrageous situations as they search for meaning & companionship. For all of the wildly imaginative scenes brimming with gallows humor, there is social commentary. Technology's dominance of our social & personal lives is examined, yet the outrageousness of the situations undercuts any meaningful & lasting critique. 👇

vivastory Unapologetically outlandish, very much in the spirit of Chuck Palahniuk. 2y

This is a crazy book—surrealistic, funny, thoughtful, with a lot to say about love and sex. Sometimes it‘s savage, and then unexpectedly sweet. Most true affection is lavished on sex dolls. If you like fiercely creative and weird literature, this novel is for you! I really enjoyed it.

Reggie Have you read her other book? Tampa? I feel like she has a lot to say about parents. 2y
EloisaJames @Reggie I haven‘t. Do you recommend it? The heroine‘s relationship with her father is central to Made for Love. 2y

EloisaJames @swishandflick yeah, exactly! That was a surprise! 2y
Reggie That book‘s not for everyone. It‘s about the molestation of a young teenage boy by his young married female teacher. It starts light then gets real heavy. But just like Made for Love, Nutting has a lot to say about the world. 2y
EloisaJames @Reggie Yikes. Not for me~ thanks for telling me! 2y
Jokila I actually love Tampa lol. We don‘t get a lot of female gaze in lit, so I‘m all for it. I actually enjoyed it so much it set up unrealistic expectations for this sophomore novel (for me) 2y

Bailedbailed

Good until out of nowhere it gets hatefully ableist and peddles the kind of junk abnormal-psychology that has been used for centuries to dehumanize and hurt mentally ill people who don't have the fluffy kind of mental illness that makes neurotypicals want to wrap you in blankets and feed you. I'm going to bed now.

blurb
Bertha_Mason
Made for Love | Alissa Nutting

The author just put it approvingly into a character's mouth that people with NPD are "awful," "wretched" people who "might not deserve to live." I wish, I wish, I WISH non-cluster-B people would just forget we exist. Stop demonizing us. Stop sexualizing us. Stop being "fascinated by" us. Stop fetishizing us. Just stop thinking about us. Just leave us alone. You sicko fucks.???

Bertha_Mason A major plot point is that a character's NPD has been "cured." Which means, according to the text, that he can "feel love" and "has a moral code." Something something he helps Hazel in order to make the cure "complete" something something, and now I'm done reading this book. I'm disgusted and hurt and want to go to bed and never get up again. 2y
Bertha_Mason I guess I should be grateful the "bit of a s*ciopath" wasn't theprotag's abusive husband. I'm not, though. That was just how the author strung me along for fourteen chapters. Fuck her. 2y

The reviews by people saying they didn't like it because it was weird and surreal are baffling to me. Then why did they pick it up? The weirdness and, yes, the perversity, were all things they were warned about in the first sentences of the synopsis. Like ???

His first question to everyone, always: " What do you *do*?" by which he meant, *What can you do for me?* Hazel wanted to make a real effort from now on for her words, actions, and existence to be as pointless as possible. From this day forward, she vowed to be a living middle finger of inanity raised in the direction of either Byron or his grave."

batsy Oh, perfect. I love Hazel's goal so much. I meet countless Byrons every day... 2y
Bertha_Mason Me too. 😝 We should all strive to spend more time being unproductive, or at least questioning what our productivity goes toward. 2y

Mehso-so

What to say about this book - what to say? I'll start with what the heck did I just read? The cover is great and that's what drew me in. But the story seemed completely disjointed and I couldn't relate with the main character at all. And let's not even start on Jasper's, um, situation. My eye may never stop twitching. I did genuinely giggle a few times, so that earned the so-so rather than pan. Still, great cover.
