The Japanese Lover
The Japanese Lover: A Novel | Isabel Allende
Named one of the most anticipated novels of the year by New York Magazine, The Wall Street Journal, Entertainment Weekly, Cosmopolitan, Harpers Bazaar, Publishers Weekly, The Huffington Post, and more. From New York Times and internationally bestselling author Isabel Allende, an exquisitely crafted love story and multigenerational epic that sweeps from San Francisco in the present-day to Poland and the United States during the Second World War.In 1939, as Poland falls under the shadow of the Nazis, young Alma Belascos parents send her away to live in safety with an aunt and uncle in their opulent mansion in San Francisco. There, as the rest of the world goes to war, she encounters Ichimei Fukuda, the quiet and gentle son of the familys Japanese gardener. Unnoticed by those around them, a tender love affair begins to blossom. Following the Japanese attack on Pearl Harbor, the two are cruelly pulled apart as Ichimei and his familylike thousands of other Japanese Americansare declared enemies and forcibly relocated to internment camps run by the United States government. Throughout their lifetimes, Alma and Ichimei reunite again and again, but theirs is a love that they are forever forced to hide from the world. Decades later, Alma is nearing the end of her long and eventful life. Irina Bazili, a care worker struggling to come to terms with her own troubled past, meets the elderly woman and her grandson, Seth, at San Franciscos charmingly eccentric Lark House nursing home. As Irina and Seth forge a friendship, they become intrigued by a series of mysterious gifts and letters sent to Alma, eventually learning about Ichimei and this extraordinary secret passion that has endured for nearly seventy years. Sweeping through time and spanning generations and continents, The Japanese Lover explores questions of identity, abandonment, redemption, and the unknowable impact of fate on our lives. Written with the same attention to historical detail and keen understanding of her characters that Isabel Allende has been known for since her landmark first novel The House of the Spirits, The Japanese Lover is a profoundly moving tribute to the constancy of the human heart in a world of unceasing change.

How does one live in the present when the past was defined by war, abuse, and loss? And how does one build a brighter future? In this novel, the characters are dealing with these questions and finding their answers through the many forms love takes. #audiobook

This in an epic tale: historical & romance, involving a romance from WWII to modern era. It is both heartbreaking and realistic. Ichimei and Alma are the star crossed lovers of their time. This feels like it could be real. In the modern era we have Irina, the Moldovan immigrant who becomes close to Alma and is entrusted with her secrets all the while Irina‘s skin crawling childhood secrets come to light as well. ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ #mbcreadathon

A book about how we love different people in different ways for different reasons, and about how each person we love meets needs for us that no one else can.

Isabel Allende achieved greatness once again with this unique love story. It jumps from present day as Alma decides to live out her old age in a retirement home, to her past when she is sent to the United States to live with her aunt and uncle during WWII. A forbidden love affair begins there, and is sadly disrupted after the love of her life is sent away. Beautiful story with complex characters.

Not my favourite novel by Allende - she seemed to be including 2 different novels in one book. There was definitely enough to recommend though - and I loved the ending.

Today is a wildcard day for #Augustisatrip so I‘m choosing #SanFrancisco as a place I‘d like to visit. It‘s been too long since I‘ve been there! I‘ve been reading the tagged book (set mainly in SF with other locations thrown in) a chapter or two at a time during #lunch at work. It‘s been slow progress, but I should make up time the next few weeks because my lunch buddy is traveling.

⭐⭐ (1.5)
Too much nonchalant exposition for my tastes.

This was another #BlameItOnLitsy, and second on my #MakeMeReadIt stack, so I feel bad that I didn't like it very much. It never grabbed me, there were a couple historical inaccuracies, and it just seemed too dull. I found myself trying to finish it just to be done with it and move on.

Well, I was looking forward to reading in the waiting room of my derm's office this morning, but she had a personal emergency and my appointment was moved to tomorrow. So I ended up snuggled on the couch with Han Solo, scruffy nerf herder, who guarded my Kindle during an inadvertent nap after snapping this pic. I'm on the last chapter, so I hope to finish today so I can move on to something more to my liking. #dogsoflitsy #WhenItsQuietINap

1. "Back to the Future" and "ET" were tied for that honor that year.
2. I order french fries, and usually steal an onion ring or two off my husband's plate.
3. In the house, we are all about kid sing alongs, in the car my oldest picks from my cd collection, which is heavily classic rock mixed with random stuff from different genres. I really want to hear the new McCartney, though.
4. Meh.
5. Okie dokie.

Set aside Western Lit after finishing the first chapter because my Overdrive hold came in today. The 2nd book on my #MakeMeReadIt stack is The Japanese Lover. Well, 99 pages in and I'm ... bored. I don't usually like to read romance, so I purposefully picked one with subject matter that I'm interested in, particularly the San Francisco area and Japanese Internment. Even with that, I'm finding this book kind of dull. Hoping it gets better.

I read this one when it came out, years ago. I remember thinking it was a sweet and sad love story. Funnily enough, it also came at a point when I read a lot about the Japanese American internment camps, so I was very aware of the history behind this novel. It‘s far from being Allende‘s finest book, but it is rather enjoyable as a light read.

TheBookAddict I love Allende!!! 💕💕💕 2y

Geez louise, so much tragedy! Not my jam there. The historical aspects were quite interesting but the violence against women and children (though not graphically detailed throughout) was disturbing stuff. The audiobook was well read though the various back and forth in time about both Alma and Irina got confusing at times. Also I'd love to know if the cat really was Nico or actually Neko 😽 #mommyreads #audiobook

I really enjoyed this love story, as it wasn't just a love story. It was an ode to growing old, to relationships; It was historically accurate, detailing Japanese internment. Isabel Allende writes beautifully and this novel is no exception. #ThirdBookof2018

I was thrilled to spot this book in my local library as it's been on my TBR list for a while. I loved Allende's Eva Luna and this book came highly recommended from a few friends.

It wasn't love for me, however, and I had to push myself to finish it. I found the beginning a bit slow, and found myself waiting for it to pick up and get a bit more exciting but it never really did.

LeahBergen How did I miss this post?? 😮 2y
Jakaranda Almost quit after first few chapters but was bookclub pick and I‘m a little trooper. Too many topics in this book and felt a bit like a soap opera to me. When it briefly touched on aging it hit close to home (a bit too close with my mom) and found the Utah internment camp stuff really interesting. Our bookclub agreed Irene might have made a better main character. Other than that, breathed a sigh of relief when I️ turned the last page. (edited) 2y

Allende's novel takes a closer look at relationships, family, and love. Irina, a Polish immigrant accepts a job at a retirement home where we are introduced to Alma. Alma and Irina fall into an unexpected friendship that stems from Irina working as her assistant. This is also how Irina meets Alma's grandson, Seth. Irina and Seth bond over their mutual interest in Alma‘s past which is revealed through letters and mysterious flower deliveries.
