Beautifully written, just a little disappointed in the storyline. Going into this, I think I was just hoping for something a little more uplifting, and I didn‘t * really * get what I was looking for.. (I know, I know - a story set against a backdrop of the Russian revolution.. how could I possibly think that would have a happy ending, right?) 🤦🏼‍♀️

⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️

I really enjoyed this book. It‘s a quick, easy read but it still delivered great story and fairly well-developed characters given the length of the book. I particularly liked the way Emily was written - she may be an A.I. (or an “A.C.” if you ask her) but she still came across as an extremely relatable character and that definitely added to my appreciation of Wheaton‘s work.

Also using this for my #popsugar19 “uni campus” read 👩🏼‍🏫

laurenslibrary Gah! I just bought Milkman on audio! Nooo. Why didn't you like it? 1mo
KathrynElise @laurenslibrary haha don‘t panic! I really struggled reading the book (mainly because of the style it was written in and the “voice” it was written in). I ended up downloading the audiobook and i enjoyed it far more that way because the narrator is actually Irish... Just made it easier for me to comprehend and relate to that way, when I didn‘t have to “interpret” it in my own head 😊 I didn‘t love the book but can definitely appreciate it! 1mo
BiblioLitten I bailed on The Milkman. I appreciate the writing and the theme but it was becoming a struggle and I wasn‘t enjoying it. Maybe I‘ll pick it up if there‘s a buddy read. 1mo
See All 6 Comments
KathrynElise @BiblioLitten my experience exactly. I read about 2/3 of it and couldn‘t go any further but wanted to be able to discuss it properly at book club. So I downloaded the audiobook and it was a completely different experience - highly recommend it if you struggled with actually reading it. Wouldn‘t say it was “enjoyable” but I definitely appreciated the story and the writing more 👍🏼 1mo

When I started this I was looking for an epic fantasy, and I got what I wanted.

This book is a bit of a chunkster, but I honestly would have been happy if it was triple the size as I just didn‘t want this tale to end. It‘s a beautiful and detailed fantasy full of powerful characters and themes; and Shannon did an excellent job of delivering a tale of such grand proportions so completely and in so few pages.

KathrynElise @GondorGirl as far as I‘m aware, yes. Reading the ending I couldn‘t see this linking to a sequel, and I haven‘t heard anything to the contrary 👍🏼 3mo

KathrynElise @GondorGirl haha I hear you! So many series on my TBR list but I‘m already struggling to fit in my popsugar challenge and book club reads, so I‘m experiencing commitment issues when it comes to series 😜 This one is fine though and pretty easy to read so didn‘t take too long given the size of it! 😊 3mo

Cinfhen Confession: I bailed on the first HP and never picked up another one 🙊 (edited) 3mo
Mdargusch Haha! @Cinfhen I read the first one so I knew what the hype was. Plus my overly religious sister said Harry Potter was evil and about the devil and I needed to be able to argue against that assertion since that‘s all my girls wanted to read. 😳 but one was enough. 3mo
KathrynElise @Cinfhen 🐵🙊🙈 haha I honestly couldn‘t imagine never having read these. In saying that, I‘m also not sure I would have loved the series had I started them later on in life..? I can still re-read them now and love them, but it is more of a “nostalgic” type of love that may never have existed if I‘d been older when these became a hit 🤷🏼‍♀️ 3mo
See All 12 Comments
KathrynElise @Mdargusch haha my crazy religious uncle was rambling on for months about how these books were evil and from the devil, etc. and my parents wouldn‘t let me touch these when they first became popular! It took a parent-teacher meeting with my yr4 teacher (at an * Anglican * school) to convince them otherwise 🤦🏼‍♀️ I still can‘t believe the narrow mindedness of it 🙅🏼‍♀️haha 3mo
Cinfhen Whoa!!! What is wrong with people????? HP the devil???? Really @Mdargusch @KathrynElise that‘s NUTS!!! 3mo
Mdargusch Wow! @KathrynElise I can‘t believe someone else had that experience! I told my sister how wrong she was because to me it was a book about good overcoming evil (in a very simplistic explanation) @Cinfhen 3mo

emilyhaldi My husband loves Harry Potter and often tries to convince me to read them... I got through 2.5 and gave up. Just not for me!! 🤷🏻‍♀️ 3mo
KathrynElise @Cinfhen tell me about it! Completely crazy, right? I really don‘t know what my parents were thinking at the time 🤷🏼‍♀️ @Mdargusch that‘s exactly the same argument my teacher used, thankfully enough. It‘s all about right vs wrong in the end, which is relevant regardless of whether you‘re religious or not. Who would ever think that a children‘s fantasy book could be so threatening though? 😔 3mo
KathrynElise @Reviewsbylola @emilyhaldi they‘re not everyone‘s cup of tea I suppose 🙃 Although until I joined Litsy I honestly never realized how many people just aren‘t fans.. almost everyone I knew and/or associated with throughout primary school and high school were nuts about HP, so it‘s hard to imagine anything outside of that 🤔 Lol 3mo
emilyhaldi I would say MOST people I know are HP fans and when they learn I‘m not they‘re horrified 😆 3mo

“When little elves have cut themselves,
Or Mouse has hurt her tail,
Or Froggie‘s arm has come to harm,
This herb will never fail.
The Fairy‘s skill can cure each ill
And soothe the sorest pain;
She‘ll bathe, and bind, and soon they‘ll find
That they are well again”.

Leave you and deceive you
