The Chain | Adrian McKinty

Mehso-so

This had a great premise, but as other reviewers noted, kind of fizzled towards the end. The idea of an organization forcing child kidnap for ransom was intriguing, & I even liked the background on who was behind the chain. But I wasn't drawn in by any characters except maybe the kids, the bad guys were a bit cartoonishly evil, & by the end the chapters were too short & jumped around too much. Lots of suspension of disbelief required. 2.75⭐️s

If it weren‘t for #Popsugar2019, I never would have picked this #LitRPG, but I liked it!

Jason is a bullied, lonely teenager in the not-too-distant future whose favorite escape is video games. We follow him into a brand new, intuitive virtual reality game controlled by an AI. The game is fascinating, the story is fast-paced, if at times a little predictable, and Jason is a likable character. I may even continue the series. 😯

#Screamathon friends....throw some of your rec's my way!

I'm further behind on the #popsugar2019 challenge than I planned on being by October, so I am looking for a few #screamathon worthy books to fill the following prompts:

✨A book with 1 mil.+ ratings on Goodreads (that is not Twilight! 😂)
✨Pop, Sugar, or Challenge in the title
✨a book you see someone reading on TV or in a movie
✨a book with salty, sweet, bitter or spicy in the title

4thhouseontheleft Frankenstein is another with 1 mil plus ratings, but I've already read it. 2w
Birdsong28 This is a really good book 2w
SauerPatch The Shining! From the episode in Friends where Rachel finds a copy of it in the Joey‘s freezer because it scared him. 🤣 2w

4thhouseontheleft @SauerPatch I forgot The Shining was the freezer book! So it would work for the #bbrc freezer prompt too! Thanks! 2w
4thhouseontheleft @Birdsong28 Thanks, I‘ll take a look at that one! 2w
Boooooks Gilmore girls for the tv one should give loads of options I know Christine, Cujo, Jekyll and Hyde and Rosemary‘s Baby are on the Rory Gilmore reading list 😁 2w
Birdsong28 @4thhouseontheleft and @SauerPatch He also does that with Little Women as its Rachel's favorite book and they swap books and he doesn't like the fact that one of them isn't too well (tried to cover a spoiler lol 😂 ) 2w
4thhouseontheleft @Birdsong28 Yeah, I remember Little Women (and Joey's reaction, LOL), but forgot which book was the first freezer book. I 💜Friends. 2w
Shakespearience In Good Omens (Amazon Prime counts as on screen right?) one of the soldiers on screen is reading American Gods. 2w
Shakespearience Also I haven‘t read it yet but one of the books on my TBR list is 2w
4thhouseontheleft @Shakespearience Thanks! I‘m going to see if my library has House of Salt and Sorrows! 2w

This book was so charming. I loved basically all the characters, even the vapid and self-involved ones. I rooted for Bee through the whole book and loved seeing an intelligent and quirky mother raising her daughter to be intelligent and quirky. The theme of motherhood and selfishness was refreshing and honest. Bernadette was unapologetic in her personality and I couldn't have admired her character more for it. Highly recommend!

This book was hilarious. Full of funny nuggets of wisdom from a father that while at times is brusque and an oddity, really loves his kids even when they baffle him. I highly recommend listening to this one!

kricheal 😂😂😂 I love your review. I'll take 1984 but I'll give you back Station Eleven 😵(didn't hate it, just didn't see what was so great about it). 2w

A twisted domestic suspense novel that I enjoyed for the first 3rd, despite some juicy, yet unpalatable plot points, but it ended up devolving into a repetitive & disappointing work with quite a few noticeable plot holes. Stephanie changed from a neurotic mommy blogger with ugly secrets to a bumbling, people-pleasing idiot, & I found Emily's motives & control over people unbelievable. I still really want to see the movie! 2.5⭐️s

ElizaMarie I really enjoyed the movie. It was aesthetically pleasing 3w
lele1432 @ElizaMarie it looks so good! The casting seems perfect. 3w

I haven't been posting my #popsugar2019 reading challenge books but I did keep notes so I'll start adding them. This is for - a book with a question in the title. It also features a podcast in the story and I think that was on last year's list. I really liked this and it stuck with me, I can remember the story vividly even though I read it months ago.

CoffeeK8 This was a great book! 3w

Here I am with another #unpopularopinion. Zuri was insufferable; hyper-sensitive when she felt disrespected, but proudly judged & disrespected anyone she felt was "bougie" & not black enough. Too many 1-dimentional caricatures of nasty rich folk who presumably didn't like Zuri b/c she's hood, & her hood status made her "realer" than anyone else. Writing was juvenile, unrealistic, & full of stereotypes. The love story felt forced & dry. 1.5⭐️s??

lele1432 I'm disappointed b/c this could've been an excellent illustration of class dynamics, but ended up losing all credibility with me. We got a bunch of broad-stroke interactions that were so exaggerated it almost felt like satire. Zuri's behavior is never addressed & doesn't change. She thinks blacks who speak proper are corny, yet she's well-read & aspires to go to Howard. Her character had too many incongruities. Narration was great tho. 3w
SW-T I wasn‘t crazy about Zuri either for basically the same reasons. 3w
lele1432 @SW-T yeah something was just off about her character. I couldn't really root for her. 3w

Finding this hard to rate! I loved Ma's depictions of NYC, American consumerism, & millennial corporate life. The ennui she portrayed that can result from the mundane tasks of product development was spot on. Even in the midst of Shen fever, corporate climbers tried to hold onto irrational career ambitions. I didn't like the post-apocalyptic storyline as much. It felt like too much going on, & I tired of Bob. Nancy Wu's narration was good. 3.5⭐️s!
