I agree with Fanny on one thing: Mr Sparkler will act foolishly

Yes still slogging through this one. I‘m finally going to start skipping the long-winded and irritating dialogs from certain characters to speed this along, such as Mr Dorrit and Mrs General. Whew! But I still love Dickens‘ writing in this one, too. Take this example about Edmund Sparkler!!

Cuilin I may have employed some speed reading techniques finishing this. 😏🤭🤔 2d

And we‘re back in the US. And back to uncomfortable similarities with the current times. @Texreader @Cuilin

Cuilin These American chapters are shockingly real. I got distracted reading American Notes about Dickens‘s travels in America. 3d

Pickpick

Visitors to London, especially those from outside of the UK, who wish to see the remnants of early Victorian London are probably going to be somewhat disappointed, although this is not just a recent thing, As the author argues, the truth is that the London of Dickens's time was already being lost before the end of the Victorian era & his writing was beginning to be thought of as 'old hat' by then too.

OutsmartYourShelf London is most definitely a living palimpsest where the evidence of previous centuries can occasionally be glimpsed through the modern city, but the rookeries & crowded tenements have been erased. In truth there is not much of 'Dickensland' left apart from the survival of an odd coaching inn or two immortalised in Pickwick Papers & the Charles Dickens Museum at Doughty Street where he lived between 1837-1839. 4d
OutsmartYourShelf In fact the most popular sites such as the purported original Old Curiosity Shop or Nancy's Steps are linked with Dickens more by tradition than hard evidence as this book points out. The last chapters deal with Dickens's work adapted for film & TV, especially the musical 'Oliver', & were really interesting too. I do wish I had known of the brief existence of actual tourist attraction 'Dickensland' as I would have liked to 4d
OutsmartYourShelf have visited before it closed but I'd never heard of it before this book. Overall it was a really interesting & informative read & has made me want to dust off my old Dickens books for a re-read at some point. 4🌟

My thanks to #NetGalley & publishers, Yale University Press, for the opportunity to read an ARC. (Catching up on some older ARCs)

Anthony and Jonas Chuzzlewit are grifters, but at least they‘re honest about it: “Hypocrite! why, we are all hypocrites. [To Pecksniff] The only difference between you and the rest was . . . you would deceive everybody, even those who practice the same art . . . Now I, when I have a business scheme in hand, tell Jonas what it is, and we discuss it openly” (123). Unlike Pecksniff, they‘re open about their chicanery!

Lcsmcat I‘m glad to be back in England- so far the American chapters are hitting a little close to home! 6d

I‘m loving the illustrations in this edition! Punch doesn‘t look quite as I picture him in my head, but Pecksniff totally does! #whatthedickens @Cuilin @Texreader

Cuilin Agreed. Pinch in my head has a more pleasant appearance than these illustrations. 2w
Lcsmcat @Cuilin Mine too! I see him as pleasant but a little sad. 2w

Can we please bring the word “snuggery” back?

The online dictionary describes it: “a cozy or comfortable place, especially someone's private room or den.”

Me: “I dare say, I‘m going to have a cup of tea and read in my snuggery. Oh, no, don‘t wait up for me.” 😊

AnnCrystal 👏🏼🤩👍🏼 #Snuggery 👏🏼😉👌🏼💝. 2w
Nebklvr Another vote for snuggery 2w
Cuilin We use it in Ireland, usually shortened to snug. Some old pubs have them. I‘ll have a g&t in the snug. A bar in Belfast “the Crown Bar” has ten!!!! 2w

In Chapter 5, we see more of Tom Pinch‘s sweetness and generosity when he meets Pecksniff‘s new pupil—none other than young Martin Chuzzlewit! Tom immediately takes to him and is unperturbed to find himself crowded uncomfortably into the carriage with Martin‘s luggage. My favorite part is Tom‘s visit to the bookstore: “all those rows on rows of volumes, neatly ranged within—what happiness did they suggest!” (78). Tom‘s a reader!!❤️

Cuilin I love Tom Pinch!!!! Such a kind sweet man. 🩷 2w
Sparklemn Tom‘s generous spirit is under appreciated by his employer and pupils, I fear. (edited) 2w

I was just telling a fellow reader about how funny Dickens is, and then reading Dickens, he gave me this: “and cause him to exhibit the soles of his shoes to the object of his dearest wish”

Having ridden boats in the Venice canals I can imagine that fall! 😂

And yes I‘m still slowly reading this one. #whattheDickens @Cuilin

Ruthiella I always forget how funny Dickens is! 3w
