Clare-Dragonfly I think Jan should have gone ahead and stayed in her room. Let Maxim deal with the consequences! He deserves to squirm a little! (edited) 2d

Clare-Dragonfly I mean, she ALSO should have told Beatrice about Danny setting her up. But let‘s be real, that was never going to happen. 2d
BarkingMadRead @Clare-Dragonfly and she had the perfect opportunity! Whyyyyyy did she not?!? 2d
Bookwormjillk @Clare-Dragonfly YES! She should have told Max and Bea about Mrs Danvers. 2d
peanutnine She definitely should have told them about Danvers but like @Clare-Dragonfly I'm not surprised she didn't. She doesn't seem to realize that she has power over her as an employer. But she probably thought they wouldn't believe her 2d
daena Maxim is the worst! As the chapters move forward my disgust of him grows. 2d
willaful @daena I'm really feeling why the author was pissed at this being called a romance. 2d
daena @willaful totally! 💯 2d
Crinoline_Laphroaig @peanutnine @Clare-Dragonfly I never under when characters don't tell what happened. I would be yelling it out. And #DreadfulDanny would be packing her bags. Honestly if she just told Bea she would have told Maxim and he would have fired Mrs D immediately. 2d
Crinoline_Laphroaig ^understand. Litsy needs edit option on comments! 2d
dabbe I, too, want the narrator to snap back and have a backbone, but she just doesn't. She's terrified of Danvers (and even Maxim at times) and is so UNSURE of herself that she can't fight back. Max wanted her as Alice in Wonderland--fiitting since Alice is a complete innocent, not worldly like Rebecca or Caroline de Winter. The irony is, though, that Max is primarily responsible for Jan's loss of innocence. #sosad 😞 2d
Ruthiella @dabbe Perfect analysis! 👌 2d
TheAromaofBooks @Clare-Dragonfly @peanutnine @Crinoline_Laphroaig @dabbe @Ruthiella - I'm interested to see if Jan even REALIZES that Danny set her up. I think she is going to excuse Mrs. D with a kind of “oh she didn't know people would be upset/it was an accident“ thing. 2d
BarkingMadRead @TheAromaofBooks that‘s a good point, although that creepy smile on Mrs D should hopefully clue her in! 2d
julieclair @TheAromaofBooks If she does that, it will totally be a throw-the-book moment for me! 1d
peanutnine @julieclair @TheAromaofBooks omg same! Hopefully she isn't THAT naive by now 1d
dabbe @TheAromaofBooks Agree! Jan wanted so much to believe that Danny was finally being nice to her that she had the rose-colored glasses look in her eyes. And, too true, @BarkingMadRead. That smirk and the closing of the door in the west wing should have been HUGE clues for Jan. What a scene! 1d

Tess of D'Ubervilles | Thomas Hardy

Cuilin That ending 😢 💔 6mo
Deblovestoread I finished a few days ago. What a heartbreaking story. How I wanted happiness for Tess and how I wanted the men who let her down to pay. So glad to have finally read this classic even with its sadness. Thanks for keeping me motivated! 6mo

currentlyreadinginCO This was fun to read together! Poor Tess! 6mo
Bookwormjillk That about sums it up. The one thing I remember about reading this in high school is my teacher going into a deep explanation about Stonehenge. I guess because if he told us what this book was really about he would have been fired? 6mo
TheBookHippie It‘s just #SOSAD …. Thanks for pulling us through!!! 6mo
quietjenn Thanks for leading us through a terrific, and terrifically devastating read. Can't believe I remembered almost nothing of it. 6mo
Ruthiella Thank for your fearless leadership @BarkingMadRead ! 👏👏👏🤩 The subtitle to this book should be “a novel of poor communication and bad timing”! 6mo
eeclayton Thanks for leading us @BarkingMadRead and thanks everyone for your comments and posts. I couldn't take part in the discussions as much as I had wanted to because it was a really busy period for me both at work and in private, but I was following and enjoying your comments all the while 💕 Hardy broke my heart but I loved the book all the same! 6mo
dabbe Thanks @BarkingMadRead for getting us through this. 🤗 Tess will stay with me for a long time. I'd add that the moral of the story is to never fall asleep on the side of the road in the middle of a dark night. 😃 6mo
julieclair Absolutely heartbreaking ending. 💔 Thanks, @BarkingMadRead for your (as always) excellent leadership through this sad tale. 6mo
Clare-Dragonfly @dabbe One of a number of morals, I‘d say! Another might be “don‘t rape women, even if they are asleep, no matter how hot you think they are.” 6mo
dabbe @Clare-Dragonfly 🤩 6mo
Daisey I knew going in that this was not going to be happy, but it was also quite different from what I expected. I also liked it better than expected. After his treatment of Tess, I was kind of hoping Angel was just going to waste away from his illness, rather than get another chance. 6mo
Bklover What a wonderful and brutally sad book! I do find it frustrating that Angel gets another chance with Tess‘s sister! Thanks @BarkingMadRead for your guidance and humor. Definitely the only way I got through this one! 6mo
KAO Thanks for the company and much needed comic relief on this journey with poor Tess! This was my first group read done with a paced plan, and the encouragement helped get me through a challenging book. I enjoyed it—even if there was some gnashing of teeth at every tragic turn! 6mo
eeclayton @Daisey I was hoping that too! 6mo
BarkingMadRead @KAO I wish we had something more fun for you to start with 🤣 6mo
Bluebird Thanks @BarkingMadRead i had remembered so little of this book from my prior read that this felt like the first time. So terribly sad! You really helped get us all through this tragic book. I really enjoyed(!?!) this group reading. 6mo

I am a day late posting my weekly update (very sick yesterday-didn‘t want to move). I was able to get in 3 gardening sessions and 1 meditation so I hit my goal. I also read or listened to 7 short stories/books (703 pages). I‘ll count that as 2 books out of 6 for my goal. Points: I‘ll edit once I count them up. My favorite was the Grumpy Cat book. #shewillbemissed #sosad

JaclynW Sorry you have been sick! I hope a speedy recovery is on its way! 5y
jb72 @JaclynW Thanks! I‘m much better now. Maybe it was food poisoning?! Much to do today (chores - boo!). 5y
JaclynW @jb72 I'm glad you feel better! Chores can wait! Take one more day to recover! 🙂 5y

The Chalk Artist | Allegra Goodman

Mehso-so

That feeling you get when a favorite author produces subpar work. :( #sosad Goodman is usually great at criticizing systems we subscribe to--see INTUITION, KAATERSKILL FALLS. This is a shallow books vs video games screed. I wish she'd focused more on her teacher and a three dimensional high school experience. The video corp storyline was contrived and convenient. Startlingly one dimensional villain there, did nothing enlightening for the story

Whew. That really was tough, and although we leave Griff, Jackson, and Wade in better places than the start, we can see the potential for them to have been in even more awesome places if Theo hadn't left them. Thank goodness for the idea of alternate universes. #sosad #realityhurts #grief #preview #adamsilvera
