The Hotel: A Novel | Elizabeth Bowen

Cuilin I want a movie made of this book just for that scene alone. Hilarious. I get Rev Eager vibes from a Room with a View. 1w

mcctrish @Cuilin I was totaly thinking how did Merchant Ivory not make this into a film?! 1w
IndoorDame @Cuilin @mcctrish yes!!! I totally want to watch this scene in a movie version! It would become a priceless cult classic! 1w
Bookwormjillk Amazing. Maybe my favorite chapter of the year. I don‘t think this can be topped. 1w
peanutnine @mcctrish 🤣🤣🤣 so perfect! This chapter was a hoot! 1w
julieclair This chapter was hysterical! Four chapters in, and Elizabeth Bowen has catapulted to my list of best authors of all time. And yes, @mcctrish and @Cuilin , Merchant Ivory dropped the ball… they NEEDED to make a film version! 1w
Cuilin @julieclair @mcctrish @IndoorDame Surely there is someone we can write to due to this glaring oversight. We need a movie!! 🎥 🍿 1w

Every once in a while I find it necessary to just filter my library's holdings by 'picture book' and enjoy a selection of the results. Harry the Dirty Dog has the most charming mix of art and story, though for colour Leo the Late Bloomer wins. The Shrinking of Treehorn is actually a pretty sharp critique of adults dismissing children. Who Was That? turned out to be a memory game I did VERY poorly at. 🤦🏼‍♂️ No fair quizzing the adult after work!

Robotswithpersonality The more I think of it, the more Leo needs further consideration from a modern context: Feels like an oversimplification of the possibilities surrounding delayed development and eliminating the potential of neurodivergence - what if there was some help besides just waiting that could have been offered? What if Leo bloomed differently than others and couldn't measure progress by the same reading/drawing etc metrics? 12mo
