Blogger Anne Bogel of Modern Mrs Darcy says: "Pride and Prejudice should be read in the spring; Emma in the summer. But Persuasion is for colder months."

Mansfield Park is a summer read as well. All the discussions of the heat, hahas and improving of gardens just make it perfect for the season. ?????

Mehso-so

Everyone seemed to love, for me went to SoSo because of 'forgive your abusive mother to save yourself' theme. You can acknowledge that you had a horrible mother and move on to make a better life for yourself. Lots of us daughters of dysfunction have. At least this book didn't go full on 'she did the best she could' Redemption Arc. But still the guilt tripping to visit abusive mother irked me.😒

Crinoline_Laphroaig Sorry but I get particularly cranky about this around Mother's Day. When I'm bombarded with sappy commercials and Social Media. 3y
GingerAntics @Crinoline_Laphroaig I‘m with you on that. I love my mother, yes, but there is still MASSIVE distinction there. It‘s hard not to all out roll my eyes at some of these commercials. (edited) 3y
Crinoline_Laphroaig @GingerAntics it's my yearly Mother's Day Rant. 😉 3y
GingerAntics @Crinoline_Laphroaig we all need one!!! 🤣 3y

Pickpick

Epiphany #Pemberlittens on not liking when originally read as a teenager. Now I have Elizabeth Bennet's Obstinate Headstrong Girl attitude, back then I was Fanny Price. Quiet, shy, & afraid. Often I compare my hypochondriac mother to Mrs Bennet. Yet so many times with reading(especially w/Juliet Stevenson audio) Mrs Norris sounded exactly like my mother. Verbal abuse & neglect of Fanny I think just hit to close to home for me back then....⬇️

Crinoline_Laphroaig Another reason for disliking - Fanny got her HEA but Edmund is no Mr Darcy or Henry Tilney.

Having survived and thrived despite of my childhood, I can now read through older eyes and appreciate Fanny Price. #musingsonmansfield

Crinoline_Laphroaig I can definitely see myself reading Mansfield Park. Especially this beautiful copy I received from @Mitch for #AVeryAustenHolidaySwap. I treasure it. #forevershelf 3y
Andrea313 Feels wrong to "love" this comment. I'm sorry to hear about all you have been through. But I appreciate your words on appreciating Fanny, and of course I love your beautiful photo. ❤️ 3y

It's officially Fanny's family has driven her to drink. Myself I would have gone for the Whisky. 😉

I've been collecting Clothbound Penguin Classics as #Pemberlittens read Jane Austen. We're currently still reading Mansfield Park but I spied a copy of Emma today when I stopped into Barnes and Noble for a coffee and I brought her home. I liked to be prepared. 😉 @sprainedbrain

#throwbackthursday - A year ago today, when the biggest worry I had about going out was whether or not there would be tea. It was the last time going out was carefree.

Today #Pemberlittens I'm at home catching up on my #chapteraday #musingsonmansfield @sprainedbrain

Palimpsest Emma was the last movie I saw in the theater on March 8th 2020. 3y
Crinoline_Laphroaig @Palimpsest I had lunch with a friend that day. We did talk a bit about Covid but mostly books. After the movie we decided if Emma was the last movie we saw(and it was) at least it was one we both loved. 3y
GingerAntics I think the tea is the only thing that has made quarantine tolerable. I applaud you for sneaking tea into the movie. Especially for that kind of movie, tea is absolutely essential!!! 💙💙💙 3y

Crinoline_Laphroaig @GingerAntics how could you not have tea with Emma! 3y
GingerAntics @Crinoline_Laphroaig see?! It‘s a requirement. I can‘t believe the theatre wasn‘t prepared for this necessity, or at least open to bringing your own. This is a totally reasonable expectation to have tea with Emma. 3y
GingerAntics I just looked it up. The last time I went out carefree was 7 March 2020 to an Irish festival. A week to the day after, I was sick and we were about to go into lockdown. 3y
GingerAntics Okay, so I‘ve been looking into good places to start with Jane Austen. Would you say Emma is a good starting point? 3y
Crinoline_Laphroaig @GingerAntics Pride and Prejudice was my 1st Austen and remains my 1st love. It's also one of earlier works 3y
Crinoline_Laphroaig @GingerAntics ^ one of her earlier works. But love Emma as well. Emma's a bit of a snob but has a good heart. 3y
Crinoline_Laphroaig @GingerAntics either one is good read. #Pemberlittens will be reading Chapter a Day of Emma starting May 1st. It's a fun group to Readalong with. 3y
GingerAntics @Crinoline_Laphroaig everything I‘ve seen says either Pride and Prejudice or Emma for varying reasons, and it seems Pride and Prejudice was first and Emma was second. I‘m not the biggest romance fan ever, so I‘ve been avoiding Austen like the plague. I was leaning toward Emma because someone said it wasn‘t as much a romance as Pride and Prejudice (more a comedy of errors type thing). 🤷🏼‍♀️ 3y
GingerAntics @Crinoline_Laphroaig that could be a way to get through it. Hm. I think I‘m adding that to this month‘s book order. Maybe an audio version as well. 3y
Crinoline_Laphroaig @GingerAntics Juliet Stevenson has done audio for all Austen except Pride and Prejudice. She's my absolute favorite Narrator 3y
Crinoline_Laphroaig @GingerAntics ^she just makes story come to life. 3y
GingerAntics @Crinoline_Laphroaig I just found an Apple Books classics edition of Emma (so free). I have a copy of Pride and Prejudice that I got on Apple Books for free a while back that I totally forgot about, too. Okay, so I basically have no excuse. lol (edited) 3y
Palimpsest @GingerAntics I think while romance plays the biggest role in all of Austen‘s novels, there are other elements like the communities themselves, class, and etiquette which differentiates these novels from a typical, especially modern romance, which I don‘t really like. I read Northanger Abbey first, but I wouldn‘t start with it as it is sort of mocking the Gothic novel. I think Pride & Prejudice or Emma would both be good choices and my favorites. 3y
Palimpsest @Crinoline_Laphroaig I absolutely loved this version of Emma and while there were a few moments where I thought okay, that was different, I don‘t understand why so many people disliked it. I‘m re-reading Mansfield Park with the Pemberlittens, but I‘m not enjoying it as much as I did ten years ago for whatever reason. I‘m Looking forward to re-reading Emma and Persuasion. 3y
Crinoline_Laphroaig @Palimpsest I thought this Emma was one of the most beautiful movies ever. All that blue and cream. Most period films are so dark. 3y
Palimpsest @Crinoline_Laphroaig agreed. The costumes and sets are gorgeous. 3y
rwmg I didn't get to see Emma. Covid got here first 😭 3y

Catching up on Ch 30 - 32. And all I can think is ??? - Henry Crawford & Sir Thomas.

"I had thought you peculiarly free from wilfulness of temper, self-conceit , and every tendency to that independence of spirit, which prevails so much in modern days, even in young women, and which in young women is offensive and disgusting beyond all common offence."
