One Flew Over the Cuckoo's Nest
One Flew Over the Cuckoo's Nest: 50th Anniversary Edition | Ken Kesey
Boisterous, ribald, and ultimately shattering, Ken Keseys 1962 novel has left an indelible mark on the literature of our time. Now in a new deluxe edition with a foreword by Chuck Palahniuk and cover by Joe Sacco, here is the unforgettable story of a mental ward and its inhabitants, especially the tyrannical Big Nurse Ratched and Randle Patrick McMurphy, the brawling, fun-loving new inmate who resolves to oppose her. We see the struggle through the eyes of Chief Bromden, the seemingly mute half-Indian patient who witnesses and understands McMurphys heroic attempt to do battle with the powers that keep them all imprisoned.

What a great classic. While reading I tried to picture Jack Nicholson, which at times gave me a great chuckle.

Incredible inside view from the perspective of a schizophrenic Native American Chief who does not speak. It is his view of McMurphy, played by Jack Nicholson in the movie, which brings the story of the inner workings of a Psyche Ward to life.

⭐️⭐️⭐️ Second time around and this still didn‘t knock my socks off, but in appreciation for Kesey‘s brazenness, I bumped it up a star. Growing up with a psyche nurse mom, I thought this would be especially riveting, but it‘s more about a power struggle between two unlikeable characters than anything else. I love Chief Bromden and his first-person narration, but McMurphy and Ratched are both insufferable pains in the ass.

Scochrane26 Did you know Kesey was high on lsd while writing part of this? Not too surprising. 4mo

Dropped my kindergartener off for his first full day of school this morning. 😭 Now, both of my babies are in school. To distract myself - and celebrate my freedom - I headed to the greenway which I usually only manage on weekends. Got in a 7-miles (5mi run, 2mi walk) while rereading the tagged book. Then, I met a couple of mom friends for lunch. 🥐🍓

I first read this about 40 years ago. It‘s funny how you remember the movie and the play more than the book. That said, this is still a telling book about mental illness and man‘s inhumanity to those less forty. It‘s also a book that has stood the test of time. With its overt religious symbolism, this is a book that, for me at least!”, ranks right up there with 1984 and Catcher in the Rye. Although magnificent, the film omits so much from the book

DAY 22: I‘m not sure if Nurse Ratched is considered a sociopath or a #psychopath, but this controlling, vindictive “Big Nurse” might be the most disturbed person at Salem State Hospital.

I didn‘t love this book when I read it a few years ago, but I feel compelled to try it again someday.

#nofemmeber

Billypar It's a very good realistic villain role- she doesn't actually do anything that is out of bounds for a nurse, but she's part of a system that values order over patient well-being. 12mo

I hated this “classic.” I found it to be racist and misogynistic, and it seems to revolve around the idea that white men are being emasculated. Nurse Ratched is wretched, but the idea that women and minorities could use the system against the very people who built it (white men) is not just silly but feeds into racism and misogyny. https://cannonballread.com/2018/09/pass-the-harpoon-cuz-this-one-blows/

I‘m always fascinated by this story. I‘ve read the book, seen the movie and seen multiple stage adaptations- the subject matter is, obviously, traumatic but a few years back someone put in my mind the idea that perhaps Chief imagined McMurphy; that he was just a manifestation of the person he needed to gain empowerment and, through that lens, the story is especially fascinating. #kenkesey #cuckoosnest #classics

I dare not guess at how many times I‘ve read this book over the years. I first encountered it on one of the bookshelves in my parents house at age 10. I had just seen the film and brought the book to my mother for confirmation that it was indeed the very same Cuckoo‘s Nest. I still consider it one of the greatest novels written in the 20th Century.
