Small and the Mighty: Twelve Unsung Americans Who Changed the Course of History, from the Founding to the Civil Rights Movement
Small and the Mighty: Twelve Unsung Americans Who Changed the Course of History, from the Founding to the Civil Rights Movement | Sharon McMahon
From America's favorite government teacher, a heartfelt, inspiring portrait of twelve ordinary Americans whose courage formed the character of our country. In The Small and the Mighty, Sharon McMahon proves that the most remarkable Americans are often ordinary people who didn't make it into the textbooks. Not the presidents, but the telephone operators. Not the aristocrats, but the schoolteachers. Through meticulous research, she discovers history's unsung characters and brings their rich, riveting stories to light for the first time. You'll meet a woman astride a white horse riding down Pennsylvania Ave, a young boy detained at a Japanese incarceration camp, a formerly enslaved woman on a mission to reunite with her daughter, a poet on a train, and a teacher who learns to work with her enemies. More than one thing is bombed, and multiple people surprisingly become rich. Some rich with money, and some wealthy with things that matter more. This is a book about what really made America - and Americans - great. McMahon's cast of improbable champions will become familiar friends, lighting the path we journey in our quest to make the world more just, peaceful, good, and free.

Hello #SheSaid!

I hope you enjoyed this one. I‘m still behind, but am enjoying it and the tangents too. Please drop by the comments as you finish.

Riveted_Reader_Melissa Anyone else feel a little depressed in some sections…about how much some of these people went through, did for their communities, got no recognition, and here in the US it feels like we are determined to repeat it all again….like we have learned nothing. 🫠 1w

vlwelser We're not great at learning from mistakes here in the US. Or the wrong people have all of the power. Could be both. 7d
Riveted_Reader_Melissa @vlwelser People put the wrong people in power, so same thing. I‘m still very disappointed that people saw the “child separation” policy, and said this time they will only get rid of criminals, let‘s put those exact same people back in power again and give them more money & people. 6d
Riveted_Reader_Melissa …and then shocked, just horrified at what happens. Like it was not obvious what they would do. 6d
vlwelser It was dreadful the last time but it's like they forgot. It's all propaganda. They hear what they want. And think they can't possibly be talking about them. 6d
Riveted_Reader_Melissa So sad and was so easily avoidable 5d

Hello #SheSaid!

Sorry I‘ve been behind this month, but I hope you are all enjoying it. Hopefully I‘ll catch up sometime before too long. Stop in to the comments as you finish this week‘s section.

kspenmoll I have really enjoyed the chapters on Hawaii, the horrific decision to intern Japanese citizens, the fight for reparations, & the lifelong relationship between Alan Simpson & Norman Mineta. 2w
MallenNC @kspenmoll I read this previously and the Hawaii chapters were my favorite 2w
vlwelser This section is far and away my favorite so far. Maybe because these guys are more modern. It would have been great if she found more like this esp a female. 2w

I follow McMahon on Instagram and really enjoy her take on politics. As a fellow history teacher and fan, I expected to like this more. The history teacher in me loved the figures she highlighted, her reflections on events, and her not-so-subtle connections to today's world. However, the English teacher in me struggled with the inconsistent voice and disjointed organization. It's a pick, but not a love. #SheSaid @Riveted_Reader_Melissa

I am captivated by these diverse, passionate, & dedicated heroines in American Women‘s history. If I had to choose among the 6 women & the Hello Girls, I would choose Clara Brown & Inez Milholland as my favorite heroines. But they all gave of their hearts, souls & lives to whatever cause they espoused.I am exhilarated by this education I am experiencing through this book. #SheSaid

Suet624 Finally got this book from the library 1mo
kspenmoll @Suet624 I hope you enjoy these women as much as I have- feisty, bold, doing whats right in their eyes in pre Civil War & later when women had no rights. Impressive. 1mo

staci.reads I'm a couple chapters short of being caught up, but I'm close. My takeaways so far are that I'm enjoying learning about these lesser-known Americans who should be commonly- known, and holy cow...tangents! I am struggling with the organizational style that allows her to be feeling the story of Maria de Lopez and all of the sudden we're reading about Fortunate Eagle and the Pope...then suddenly it's about Walt Disney. . 1mo
staci.reads (Cont) ...then oh yeah, we were learning about Maria. Whiplash! Or, let's learn about Katherine Lee Bates... but suddenly, 2 pages on Paul Revere's life, all because the church bell in Katie's father's church was made by Revere 🙄 1mo
staci.reads Also, I highly recommend that when you finish chapter 11, Google images of the Spirit of Idaho Women statue; it's marvelous. 1mo
vlwelser I'm digging this. Entirely. I enjoy that she goes off on tangents like a hyperactive school teacher. 1mo
DebinHawaii I‘m finally caught up & went past to the next section by accident. I agree about the whiplash😳 but it definitely is keeping my attention & I‘m enjoying it. 3w

Twelve lesser known figures whose lives had great impact on American history, this was the perfect palate cleanser audiobook after some heavier listens. It held my attention, taught me things I didn‘t know, and reminded me that individual can make a difference, a timely reminder these days.

I kept seeing good things written about this book and they‘re all true! It looks at people who aren‘t necessarily remembered in American history, but who made major, notable impacts on some very familiar things. And McMahon is such a delightful audiobook reader that I would like to request she read all history audiobooks from now on.

“One of the most effective ways to stop cultural change is to create a moral panic around it. Moral panics have been around since this country‘s inception. Since then, moral panics have been used as a tool to subvert & dismantle movements that the dominant caste views as a threat.” A very relevant book for the current political environment. Reading the obstacles that many have faced & overcome in our history gives me hope.

⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ As the author introduced herself to the reader, I died laughing. Read it and you‘ll get it. Definitely set me up for a fab reading experience. The subtitle says it all. A brief history of 12 lesser-known Americans. This was well-written, fascinating, and important. And often times delivered in a funny way. Highly entertaining.

I listened to the book narrated by the author. Given recent political events, this was a timely read about everyday people who made significant impacts in seemingly small acts. It leaves me hopeful that history will repeat itself.

1. It changes! At the moment it‘s The Change by Garth Brooks.
2. One of the people profiled in this book is Katharine Lee Bates, who wrote the poem that became America the Beautiful. All four verses. She made $5 for the original submission and subsequently gave away copies for free.

⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ I love Sharon McMahon!I love her commitment to the truth of history, her writing style, her desire to give voice to the stories that have mostly been untold. This book‘s content and the way it was written is excellent! The only reason it‘s down one star is because I‘m a bad reader of story collections, & that is more what this feels like than an overarching narrative. The audiobook is excellent,&I‘m so appreciative of what Sharon has given us!

“The best Americans are not the critics, they are the doers. They are the people who went for broke when everyone else yelled to turn back. They are those who know that one becomes great because of who they lift up, not who they put down.”

Sharon tell us the stories of 12 ordinary Americans, who are not in the history books but should be, who did the next needed thing. And we are all better for it ❤️
