Christmas and Other Horrors
Christmas and Other Horrors: An Anthology of Solstice Horror | Garth Nix, Josh Malerman
14 posts | 3 read | 18 to read
Hugo Award winning editor, and horror legend, Ellen Datlow presents a terrifying and chilling horror anthology of original short stories exploring the endless terrors of winter solstice traditions across the globe, featuring chillers by Tananarive Due, Stephen Graham Jones, Alma Katsu and many more. Even though many celebrate the winter solstice as a time of joy, a darker tradition of ghost tales and horror stories resides in the long winter nights. This anthology of all new stories will scour the world for the unholy, the dark, the dangerous, the horrific aspects of a time when families and friends come togetherfor better and worse. Alongside Christmas celebrations, around the world are Makara Sankranti in the Hindu calendar in India, Yalda Night in Iran, Chanukah, the Roman Saturnalia, the Krampus, Dongzhi (solar term) in East Asia where sunlight passes through the 17 arches of Seventeen Arch Bridge, Summer Palace, Beijing, the pagan festival of Yule, St. Lucias Day in Scandinavia, the Druidic tradition of Alban Arthan, Soyal for Hopi Indians, Peruvian solstice festivals, and even Christmas in Antarctica at the research stations. Because the weather outside is frightful, but the fire inside is hungry Featuring stories from: Nadia Bulkin Terry Dowling Tananarive Due Jeffrey Ford Christopher Golden Stephen Graham Jones Glen Hirshberg Richard Kadrey Alma Katsu Cassandra Khaw Josh Malerman Nick Mamatas Garth Nix Benjamin Percy M. Rickert Kaaron Warren

Yay! A new “winter solstice” anthology. We read this for book club and I was happy it was a pretty solid collection with a good range of what can make up this sub-genre. The writers that I thought nailed the assignment were the ones that did something relatively simple very well. There were a few duds (and no Krampus, even though he‘s on the cover!!), but overall I thought it was a solid collection! Check it out.

For those who like to read horror and ghost stories around Christmas, the tagged is an excellent anthology. The lineup of authors is awesome, and Ellen Datlow is a great editor.

Like most short story anthologies, this collection runs the gamut between great and awful. Some of these are terrifying creature tales, some are more noir, and others are more tedious lit-fic. I had hoped for more Yule folklore terror.

vivastory This is such a great cover! (How was the SGJ?) 5mo
DGRachel @vivastory I‘m not a big SGJ fan, but his story was probably in the middle of the pack, for me, but it had an underlying theme that I don‘t like. My favorites were the first three by Christopher Golden, Benjamin Percy, and Alma Katsu and I thought Tananarive Due‘s story was good, too. I agree about the cover. I‘d almost buy a copy just for the cover. 5mo
vivastory Thanks! I'll def be checking it out. I've read, & loved, several of Datlow's anthologies this year 5mo

I love anthologies edited by Ellen Datlow. She knows how to put together an enjoyable reading experience. The horror found within ran the gamut from gory to more cerebral. 5 stars. Whopping 5,160 Word Search.

My book might seem a little out of sorts for the #HyggeHourReadathon, but I‘m enjoying it. I have on my festive and comfy leggings.
