"One of the most memorable things we've read in a long time." - io9 "Beautifully written and utterly gorgeous, DAYTRIPPER completely blew me away." - Gerard Way (Umbrella Academy, My Chemical Romance) What are the most important days of your life? F-bio Moon and Gabriel B- answer that question in the critical and commercial hit series that took the industry by storm, winning praise from such comics veterans as Terry Moore, Craig Thompson and Jeff Smith. Follow aspiring writer Br-s de Oliva Domingos as each chapter of DAYTRIPPER explores a completely different moment in his life. Moon and B- tell a beautifully lyrical tale chronicling Domingos's entire existence- from his loves to his deaths and all the possibilities in between. Introduction by Craig Thompson (BLANKETS).

A story about stories and the moments that make us who we are, even if we don't know it at the time. Maybe not what was intended but the photo prompt definitely reminded me of one of the author's names. #OminousOctober prompt: Moon @alwaysbeenaloverofbooks @eggs #Scarathlon2022 @StayCurious #TeamMonsterMash

Graphic novel for #foodandlit Brazil. An interesting journey through the key events in the life of an author, those moments you don‘t know are important until they are gone. Engaging with strong character development and interesting art. A definite recommend.

Butterfinger I also read a graphic novel from these writers. I really enjoyed it. 3y

#LiteraryLove Day 21: Each chapter in this unique graphic novel indicates the age when Brás de Oliva Domingos, his mother‘s Little Miracle, dies again and again and again throughout the novel with varying obituaries depending on what he has accomplished, his #CrazyLove, the meanings he has discovered about life. One of the most visually-affecting, aesthetically-moving, startlingly-unique stories out there. My review: https://wp.me/pDlzr-amt

Why do you think authors put Bras as an obituaries writer for his living? Why does not his a reporter or a blue collar professional?

Sace I think it made it possible for me to accept his fixation on death. Otherwise I would keep wondering why he thinks about it so much. 6y
sebrittainclark Like @RestlessFickleBookHoarder I thought it helped explain his focus on death. I saw it as him imagining what his obituary might be at different times at his life. 6y

What did you think of the book's non-linear structure, the misordered repetition of lives?
What do you think we're to make of the dream chapter?
How do you interpret the book's conclusion?
How about its supernatural instances in chapter 2? Which was your favourite chapter?

#litsygetsgraphic

LukkiAnn My favorite was a last chapter. It was logic conclusion of Bras life. Author show us how his character was developed through his life putting chapters in this way. The conclusion was great and the narration through the whole #graphicnovel was fantastic 6y
Eyelit I liked the nonlinear format, though it took me a bit to get used to it. I think I liked best the chapter when he died at 47 - we got to see his family life and how much they loved each other. I also think the conclusion was very fitting. (edited) 6y
Sace I really loved the non-linear format. It seems very natural. I don't ponder moments in my life in a linear fashion. I think my favorite chapter was the one where everyone spent the vacation at the grandparent's ranch. I think those are the kinds of moments I remember most as well. For me there was always this theme of touching the lives around us so even in death we continue on (Is that too cliché?) 6y
cobwebmoth I liked the format. I think I liked the last chapter best. It was very moving. 6y

Most of Bras death are accidents. Why do you think he dyes this way? In this chapter 👆🏻 his death is a mystery. Let‘s speculate. Was he murdered? If so, why?

LukkiAnn I think he was murdered by a boat guy because he set his eyes on a local girl. Or it is a local “sport” sacrifice a foreign for a celebration 6y

Let‘s talk about women characters in this book. We no nothing about Bras sister Clarice, she appears only in two chapters and has one speech bubble. We do not know who is Ana by profession and she is silent in her first appearance. We know that Bras has a half-blood sister but he refuses to acknowledge her. Why does the novel is so muscular? Why are the women characters not developed well?

Eyelit That was my only disappointment with the book, really. Maybe because it‘s written by two brothers and they are writing from an experience of not having many women in their spheres of influence? Idk. I get that it‘s Brás life and from his perspective, but he‘s got these great women in his life supporting him. Only his friend Jorge is kinda fleshed out in the story, and he‘s not even around as much as the women... 6y
Sace I felt like the women were actually quite present. He struggled to get over his first love. He calls and leaves a message just to hear his wife's voice. He is his mother's miracle. I felt like his life very much revolved around women (and the idea they bring life into the world.) 6y
LitsyGetsGraphic @RestlessFickleBookHoarder good point. It feels like despite of women‘s characters are not described very well they played a lot of roles in Bras life 6y

Daytripper is a book created by two Brazilians and is set in Brazil. Did Brás' story feel very foreign to you? And if so, did this magnify the story or detract from it in your experience? If not, what made Daytripper a comfortable story for you?

#litsygetsgraphic

LukkiAnn This story really reminds me Life After Life by Kate by Kate Atkinson which set in Britain. So there is no foreign in this story, life struggles are universal 6y

Daytripper is a book intimately concerned with mortality and its place in life. What did you think of the book's treatment and philosophy of death?

#litsygetsgraphic

LukkiAnn There are a lot of things in the book that gave me fruit for thoughts 💭 in some chapters it seems Bras death is unfair, sudden and tragic. I can see through these stories that there is no logic in death and the most important thing how you appreciate your life 6y

It‘s officially 7/7 so let‘s kick off the discussion! 😃

First off - what‘d you think of this graphic novel? Your first impressions?

If you had to summarize Daytripper, how do you think you would do it? What is this book about, what is its point?

#litsygetsgraphic

sebrittainclark This is such a beautiful book! I really think it's a book about not letting life pass by without really living. 6y
Eyelit I agree with @sebrittain - I think it‘s about living your life and appreciating the small moments as much as the big ones. It‘s also about the people that live that life with you and inform your experiences and personality. 6y
LukkiAnn I was impressed by art. Beautiful and colorful ❤️ it is rare to find a philosophical graphic novel full of color. I think it is a part of a consent - life is full of color 6y
cobwebmoth I agree, I thought it was beautiful. 6y

3.5/5

Finished just in time for @LitsyGetsGraphic . This isn't a graphic novel I would have checked out on my own, but I'm very glad I read it. The art is gorgeous and the story takes you on an emotional journey unlike anything I've read before. It's a story that wants to make you feel.

Definitely worth checking out if you have hoopla.

❤️ If you did not start reading Daytripper for our discussion on July 7, this is a reason #8️⃣ why you should do it (see more reasons below👇🏻)

At the end of every chapter you know what‘s coming, the hero death. But you still want to know what happens before then, and you don‘t want it to end, because in these moments you understand how a man‘s life got its shape.

Reason #7️⃣why you should read Daytripper is in authors words:

“The hardest thing was creating a world that would feel real.

Every reference, every photo, every color and every character, everything was made to try to reproduce feelings. A felling that you were alive, happy, lonely, afraid or in love.”

Reason #4️⃣ The novel won Eiser award for Best Limited Series in 2011
#5️⃣ the novel has a beautiful narration like you are reading a fiction novel inside of the graphic novel
#6️⃣ it‘s very philosophical. Chapter after chapter we meet Bras at different age, and follow him through some of the most important days of his life which ends in his death.

🌟🌟🌟🌟🌟
Daytripper is a fascinating story where the character, Bras, dies in the end of every chapter at different ages in his life. It is an interesting take on life and death, and what makes you feel as though you've accomplished enough in life. Success, family, friends, passion. What defines a good life? When can you die thinking you've lived your purpose? A great book.
#litsy #book #review #graphicnovel

Swe_Eva I‘ve read a few other of their books, but this is by far my favorite. 6y
ChaitanyaSethi @LT_eva I haven't read any other book of theirs. Would you recommend me something else? This one was absolutely amazing. 6y
Swe_Eva “De: Tales” is a short story collection of theirs that is good, albeit slightly uneven. Still have their “Two Brothers” to read, but I‘ve heard good things about it. They wrote a horror one called “Pixu” as well, but I didn‘t care for that one, unfortunately. 6y

Swe_Eva @ChaitanyaSethi Just a note, even though “Two brothers” is about two identical twins, it is not a biographical story about the authors... 6y

3⭐ This graphic novel was memorable as it had a unique and somewhat disjointed way of telling its story. The idea of it was interesting and worth the time reading it, but the execution was a bit lacking and the flow of the book too often broken by flashbacks, dreams, and/ or flashforwards. The overall "moral" or "point" of the story is excellent and made this a fine read.

Day tripper was my first serious introduction to the graphic novel (preceded by Maus but I thought that was an outlier) I perceived this genre to be superficial and I'm sorry. It is such a rich venue for story telling that provides visceral visual stimuli alongside dialogue. This particular book is incredibly touching and imaginative. The motion the artists create carries the story and moves the reader. I'm indebted. #booktober #favegraphicnovels
