@Alwaysbeenaloverofbooks

I still have my childhood copy of these beloved stories. I'm eternally grateful to Joan Aiken for igniting my lifelong love of fairy and folktales. Jan Pieńkowski's illustrations captivated me too.

I‘ve heard of the tale of Vasilisa the Beautiful and her encounter with Baba Yaga, but had never read it. I adore fairytale retellings, and was excited that this one had a darker spin on it. I thought all the nods to the original tale were clever, and I was prepared for how weird it would be based on a review. At times I didn‘t understand some of the character motivations and the book got gruesome at the end. However, I enjoyed it a lot!

Thank you @Bookgoil @Alwaysbeenaloverofbooks @Professional_Book_Dragon for this surprise happy in my mailbox this week. It came at the right time! We just buried my guy's abuela at 101 years young that same day.

An interesting and unique read. Basically a book of poems that tell a linear story. So much is conveyed with very few words. Highly recommended one-sitting short novel.

8yr old and I are about half way through this and I love it so far. Some big themes so far (death, loneliness, friendship, family) and Slavic folklore. Death positivity in this is 🙌

tokorowilliamwallace I think I would have loved being introduced to Slavic folklore at that age. 8mo
