This was a ✨comforting✨ amalgam of maxims, personal stories, and short histories that show a bit of the hope in life
I bought this actually as a gift for my sister but wanted to read it first so I read it pretty quickly before I sent it to her. But I think it would be even better digested slowly, reading passages as a pick-me-up every so often

To the friend who always provides comfort in exactly the right way at exactly the right time, thank you for your thoughtful Christmas gift. The tote bag is fabulous and I look forward to reading this! (And I didn‘t know Maltesers were a brand of malted milk balls in the UK! One of the Derry Girls actresses uses them on a holiday GBBO special and I am going to rewatch it now and eat them! 😂) Merry Christmas!

Mitch I‘m so god you like it. I‘m very very fond of Harris & Harris books and wanted to share a little of that with you ❤️ 1mo

It is wonderful to be reminded from time to time to just "be" instead of "do", to be reminded there is always hope and that better days follow after bad days. This book felt like a personally tested emotional "survival guide", a balm for those days when our soul is experiencing really gloomy weather conditions and all seems bleak and forget that maybe we just need to change the perspective from which we look at things.

The_Penniless_Author Your cat looks like two different tuxedo cats we've owned combined 😻 4mo
IuliaC @The_Penniless_Author 😂 tuxedo cats are nice. This is my first tuxedo and my first cat as well 😺 4mo
The_Penniless_Author They're very friendly! I don't know if it's something with the breed or just the particular cats I've owned/met, but they're all extremely nice. 4mo

⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️

A friend lent me this book, but I ended up buying my own copy because I can see myself finding comfort in its pages during difficult times (and wanting to loan or gift it to others). It‘s packed with short passages that draw from topics like poetry, philosophy, science, history, and personal essays, all aiming to remind us there is always hope. I wanted to savor this book slowly, reading only a bit at a time to let the words digest.

#tarottakeover so interesting that the nine of swords was pulled- I interpreted it as representative of a collective fear and anxiety that is technically very appropriate in these times. So I offer Teo books that accept these emotions and encourage us to live with them and move into a safe space as well. Thank you @ErinSueMreads for being our host and guide in this activity.

There is a comfort listed for everyone. If peanut butter toast isn‘t for you, it might be getting up and taking a shower and a walk. Exactly as titled, this book of comforts is a comfort read. What‘s really nice is that you can pick a section or a comfort and don‘t have to read in sequential order. If you have limited time or trouble focusing, that can be a comfort as well.

Words of comfort and hope from a writer who has been in the depths of despair and found a way to cope. I read a few pages a day with a family member; and when we had finished, we started again from the beginning. The book lives up to its name. Highly recommended.

“Your self-worth is not found in the minds of other people.” Haig writes openly about his struggles with depression and anxiety, and has filled a book with thoughts, quotes, and ideas that he‘s found comforting over the years.

I just loved this book. I‘m so glad I happened upon it on the “New” Nonfiction shelf at the library.

A book like this is what we need from time to time to gently remind us to keep going.

"The best thing about rock bottom is the rock part. You discover the solid bit of you. The bit that can't be broken down further. The thing that you might sentimentally call a soul. At our lowest we find the solid ground of our foundation. And we can build ourselves anew."

When the author was younger he suffered from depression and this book is a collection of thoughts, meditations and quotes that help keep him 'afloat'. It is a short self help type book that would make a good gift for anyone going through rough times. They were several memorable lines that I will try to live by...including “Get a routine baggy enough to live in.“ I gave it 4/5 stars.

I went into this with low expectations. I thought it would be full of hollow quotes but I loved it. I listened to it while walking the dog & it honestly felt like I was calling a best friend/therapist/life coach. It is full of perspective, advice, and shared experiences. I highly recommend it to anyone suffering with anxiety, depression &/or panic attacks. It really is a comforting book to listen to.

I haven‘t actually read any Matt Haig NF (I‘ve read The Midnight Library) and I really think that I need to.

This book is a collection of thoughts and quotes that Matt has collected over the years. I know a few a Littens have already posted the Pizza quote but I love it! The other quote really resonated right now for me too.

I read this from Libby and it would definitely be better as a hard copy so that you can dip into it when needed.

Caroline2 Yeah, I‘ve loved Matt Haig‘s nf books. Esp Reasons to stay alive. It‘s part self help but mainly a memoir of his own breakdown. It‘s so good. 👍 (edited) 2y

My title: Zen and the Art of Being

THE COMFORT BOOK is Haig‘s life raft: it‘s a collection of notes, lists, and stories written over a span of several years that originally served as gentle reminders to Haig‘s future self that things are not always as dark as they may seem - incorporating a diverse array of sources from across the world, history, science, and his own experiences.

The sky isn‘t more beautiful because if you have perfect skin. Music doesn‘t sound more perfect if you have a six pack. Dogs aren‘t better company if you‘re famous. Pizza tastes good regardless of your job title. The best of life exists beyond the things we are encouraged to crave.

This book is like being wrapped up in a warm blanket with a cup of hot chocolate.

Full disclosure. I love Matt Haig. I think he‘s an awesome human. I love how open and honest he is about his mental health. How he inspires others to do the same. I love his simple outlook on life.
So yes, I loved this book of quotes, essays, the odd recipe, playlists etc. It‘s a book to dip in and out of, to gift a friend having a bad day, week, year. As someone who has suffered panic attacks since my teens, I found this helpful & quite lovely.
