A Florida school has banned Amanda Gorman's poem after one parent's complaint. 😒
Gorman commented, “Book bans aren't new. But they have been on the rise…often all it takes to remove these works from our libraries and schools is a single objection. And let's be clear: most of the forbidden works are by authors who have struggled for generations to get on bookshelves. The majority of these censored works are by queer and non-white voices.”
This poem isn‘t in her book - she wrote it in response to Uvalde (amongst so many other horrors that seem never ending). It‘s beautiful.

Guys look! I think I might be the first to post my goodies from the #blitsyswap but can you blame me? Thank you so much @tmjg1978 I can‘t wait to take this stuff to work with me!!!!
I listened to the audiobook and hearing her read her work was powerful. I listen to it slowly, just a few poems at a time to savor it. She did a beautiful job paralleling our current pandemic and political unrest with similar times throughout history. I love her word play.
“It is east to harp, harder to hope.”
“Even now handshakes and hugs are like gifts, something we are shocked to grant, be granted.”
Some days, we just need a place
Where we can bleed in peace.
Our only word for this is
Poem.
I haven‘t read much poetry, but I very much enjoyed this. None are as good as The Hill We Climb, but I especially enjoyed her erasure poems and The Soldiers (or Plummer), which was particularly well done in the #audiobook. Amanda is so skilled at narrating her poems that I truly felt her emotions. Many are about the pandemic while others are about immigration or being Black in America. I am looking forward to more Gen Z voices in the arts!
“Our wounds, too, are our windows.
Through them we watch the world.”

Dearest @Hooked_on_books
Thank you for thinking of yours truly when it came time for #Top21of21 (hope I got the hashbrown right!) I'm flattered ☺ 💜
Mine has not been an illustrious reading year (more strange than solid!) and I know that lately I've been distracted by anxiety stemming from my car accident back in October AND... Animal Crossing. But I digress!
Without further ado, here for your entertainment are my Top... 16! Lol!
“When day comes, we step out of the shade, aflame and unafraid.
The new dawn blooms as we free it.
For there is always light,
if only we‘re brave enough to see it.
If only we‘re brave enough to be it.”~Amanda Gorman
Thanks for the tag @Eggs

I have been wordless since January 20th. Because something took place that defied speech. Because there was a moment of pure astonishment as I was watching the Inauguration of President Biden and Vice-President Harris. Not the kind of astonishment comprised of disbelief as I experienced on January 6th. Trust me that was a moment of lost words as well.👇🏽
So Amanda Gorman has a book coming out in April! It‘s the commemorative edition of the inauguration poem (not to be confused with the September publication of her poem collection of the same name.)
Of course, we preordered it!
More phenomenal #AmandaGorman news, Littens 😊
I pre-ordered Change Sings (a copy for my niece, one for myself) as well as her poetry collection that'll be published later this year.
And now... 💜
Placed a preorder for this book of poems by Amanda Gorman today! After hearing her speak at the inauguration, I just had to have it. 💙🇺🇸
I was both floored and inspired by this young woman. So powerful she is.

Jumping on the bandwagon with everyone. This young lady is going to change the world as Maya Angelou did. What a moment for her, & so well deserved! 🇺🇸
Amanda Gorman FTW
“Now more than ever, the United States needs an inaugural poem,” Gorman said. “Poetry is typically the touchstone that we go back to when we have to remind ourselves of the history that we stand on, and the future that we stand for.” —from the New York Times: https://www.nytimes.com/2021/01/19/books/amanda-gorman-inauguration-hill-we-clim...
A very worthy reason to break my book buying ban!
I‘m sure most of y‘all have read it, but I just had to post about it. I look forward to hearing a LOT more from Amanda Gorman 🔥

I flipped onto Twitter to follow her during the inauguration. She had 16.9k followers. She‘s up to 819k right now!!!! 👏🏼🙌🏼👊🏼
She rocked it at the Inauguration! And yes, we preordered her books!
I hope the years ahead will be inundated with these kinds of historic moments. #MadamVicePresident #AmandaGorman
Cried many tears today, felt chills while listening to the incredible poetry from this young woman. Highly recommend watching & listening if you didn‘t catch it live.
Listening to Gorman was the most powerful part of the inauguration. I can‘t believe she‘s only 22! So excited for the release of this book in Sept.
The National Youth Poet Laureate stole the Inauguration show and we loved every moment of it.
I think we can all agree the Amanda Gorman won the Inauguration today. What an incredible talent.
Me, crying getting ready for work watch Vice President Kamala Harris & President Joe Biden getting sworn in. Then me crying in the car on my commute listening to Biden‘s speech, Amazing Grace, and especially to Amanda Gorman, who knocked it out of the park with her poem. Definitely going to buy her book when it comes out. Just WOW!
🤎💜💛❤️
