A Florida school has banned Amanda Gorman's poem after one parent's complaint. 😒

Gorman commented, “Book bans aren't new. But they have been on the rise…often all it takes to remove these works from our libraries and schools is a single objection. And let's be clear: most of the forbidden works are by authors who have struggled for generations to get on bookshelves. The majority of these censored works are by queer and non-white voices.”

CaitlinR Any banned book, or attempt to ban a book makes me crazy, but this, this is just ignorant! Her poetry is powerful, approachable, and broadly embracing. To ban it, is to ban beauty! 2y

Traci1 @CaitlinR right? I don't understand anyone thinking "I don't want my kid exposed to this, so I should be able to make that decision for all kids." But this is just beyond understanding. What do they see in her beautiful work that they don't want their kid to see? I can't even begin to comprehend it. I mean, I kinda figure I know what the issue is. But the fact that the school goes along with it. Just ugh. 2y

Reggie @KathyWheeler I now kinda understand why my English teacher my senior year made our parents sign waivers giving consent to read whatever we wanted. Otherwise he would figure out a curriculum that was “safe” for your kid. 2y

Ruthiella When I was a junior in high school in 1982, one person was excused from reading existentialist literature for religious reasons and was assigned something else. But the rest of us read Kafka. That makes more sense, right? Rather than denying all the other students access. 2y

Traci1 @Ruthiella I can honestly understand someone wanting to protect their child from reading something that will possibly be traumatic to them. I read The Prince of Tides when I was 17, and 30 years later, it still haunts me. In terrible ways. But. That's me. Or that's one person's kid. I'm not religious but I have no issue with that reasoning. But again. One kid. Yours. I don't understand people who feel entitled to control the world. 2y

Traci1 @KathyWheeler I do wonder if it wasn't as much an issue when I was in school (I graduated in 92) because books by and about minorities were less prevalent. People certainly weren't more progressive. They just had less pushback on their tendencies towards racism/sexism/whatever. That's my theory anyway. 2y

KathyWheeler @Traci1 I‘m much older than you (graduated high school in 75) and you could be right. Books by and about minorities weren‘t prevalent in school back then, and my parents didn‘t censor what I read at home. 2y

I listened to the audiobook and hearing her read her work was powerful. I listen to it slowly, just a few poems at a time to savor it. She did a beautiful job paralleling our current pandemic and political unrest with similar times throughout history. I love her word play.

I haven‘t read much poetry, but I very much enjoyed this. None are as good as The Hill We Climb, but I especially enjoyed her erasure poems and The Soldiers (or Plummer), which was particularly well done in the #audiobook. Amanda is so skilled at narrating her poems that I truly felt her emotions. Many are about the pandemic while others are about immigration or being Black in America. I am looking forward to more Gen Z voices in the arts!

I don't know what your experiences were like while you were in the PNW, but Spokane gets a fair bit of snow and right now, the roads have been like ice rinks - slippy and slidey! And as grateful as I am for the rental, everyone just knows how their car handles those type of road conditions better, y'know? 4y

Hooked_on_books You have no need to be embarrassed! I think 16 titles is a great top picks list. I read far more than any human probably should, so it‘s easier to come up with 21, since I have more to work with. But we should all read what we want in whatever quantity we want and that‘s that! 4y

Hooked_on_books For me in the PNW, I lived in places with little snow and ice, but I learned to drive in Colorado, which of course has it every year. I hear you about road conditions—I would definitely want to be in a known vehicle. And your anxiety is completely understandable. I‘d be surprised if you weren‘t anxious! I feel badly for you for the tough winter. Hopefully you have some calmer weather that‘s a little easier on your psyche. 4y

I have been wordless since January 20th. Because something took place that defied speech. Because there was a moment of pure astonishment as I was watching the Inauguration of President Biden and Vice-President Harris. Not the kind of astonishment comprised of disbelief as I experienced on January 6th. Trust me that was a moment of lost words as well.👇🏽

Nute This...THIS was more of an amazement from ABSOLUTE JOY that rendered me without vocabulary adequate enough to express to another.
Amanda Gorman - the look, the vibe, the sharp intelligence in her eyes, the brown hue of her skin, the sculpture of her hair, the majestic movement of her hands, and then...THEN the flow of her words. The rhythmic musicality of her elocution. Why did I need speech when there were her words, her message, her poetry!👇🏽 (edited) 5y

Nute Her song! Her voice! I swear that I felt the earth move and tilt closer to the heavens! Why need I speak, when she spoke for me...WHEN SHE SPOKE FOR US ALL! A message of raw urgency...a request for decency, accountability, unity, realness and HOPE! An instruction to rise up and be more than before and better than ever! It might not seem like it BUT I AM STILL WITHOUT ADEQUATE WORDS!!! (edited) 5y

Me, crying getting ready for work watch Vice President Kamala Harris & President Joe Biden getting sworn in. Then me crying in the car on my commute listening to Biden‘s speech, Amazing Grace, and especially to Amanda Gorman, who knocked it out of the park with her poem. Definitely going to buy her book when it comes out. Just WOW!
