Decided my other holiday read was too large to read at dinner (sooo nice, do you think they‘ll let me take the chef home?) so I finally started this - on book 3 now, wish the holidays were longer (according to the academics at the next table they should be - they are baffled that not everybody can spend three weeks at a swanky hotel every year - absolutely baffled!) so I could just keep reading …

Buying a book just for its cover and finding out that it‘s set right where you are spending your holiday … I‘m just a few pages in but I already like the narrator - angry 12-year old forced on a family hiking holiday who would rather be on her own in her room … sounds very familiar …

Lords and Ladies | Terry Pratchett
Pickpick

I found my first Pratchett novel in our local station bookshop aged 14 or so and read the Witch books completely out of order within weeks. I enjoyed the humour and the characters but never loved L&L that much. Listening to it now in the new audio version I realized how much I missed at that age - the grief, the fear of aging, the anger and the way that those can make you stronger … loved it so much more. Also: Indira Varma‘s Sean Ogg is 😍

Just listening to the audio book - the narration is just lovely. Do I really need to be awake for work tomorrow? (Yes. I absolutely do. Argh. Why isn‘t “I couldn‘t stop listening” a valid excuse to skip work?)

So, there may have been a thing where the big evil online place sent me an email saying my pre-order‘d been cancelled. And I may have re-pre-ordered the book. And then it happened again. Which may have resulted in this little pile of fabulousness … Definitely won‘t be sending these back to get destroyed or whatever nasty things they do to returns there. Anyone in Germany who could use a free copy? (Also - the audio is utter delight! 💗)

The tagged book was supposed to get a Catholic Award for teen books but German bishops said no (it deals w sex in a non-repressive way &one of the minor characters is trans). The jury decided not to choose another book instead. So, guess who bought lots of lovely books with what would‘ve been my church tax? When I picked up my pile this morning my fave bookseller told me that Papierklavier is now sold out everywhere. 🥳

About a Boy | Nick Hornby

I need to rant about English teachers in my part of Bavaria for a bit - indulge me. Why is the choice of reading material for Abitur English classes so samey every single year? I‘ve been tutoring kids from those classes for over two decades and while Of Mice and Men and About a Boy are good books they are NOT the only books in the world!!!! Honestly! There are great writers whose names are not Hornby or Steinbeck, trust me. 🙄

BookwormM I get the Steinbeck but have never heard of Hornby being taught that is an interesting choice 3y
Kaddele @BookwormM The Hornby is really popular - at least in the schools here. I‘m teaching three students all from different schools and they are all doing About a Boy. Last everybody did Of Mice and Men and I haven‘t seen any other novels for the last few years, apart from one student who goes to school in “the big city” - they did The Hate U Give. Things are looking up :) 3y
BookwormM That is really interesting what do they teach them about About a Boy? 3y
Kaddele @BookwormM It‘s mostly characterizations / character development and looking at how the different relationships are portrayed. If the students pick a literary text for their exam the questions often include characterizations so it‘s good practice for them and the text is okay to read for most of the students. They‘re not native speakers so teachers try to pick something manageable. It‘s not a bad text for class - I‘m just really bored of it 😉😗 (edited) 3y
BookwormM I can imagine 🤣🤣interesting information thank you for sharing 3y

Mehso-so

Well, it did get better towards the end but it definitely takes far too long before anything happens, mainly because the main characters spend most of the time introspecting instead of doing things - and then you don‘t pay attention for a minute because you‘re refilling your pineapple punch and they‘re suddenly all over each other. Liked the premise and some of the other characters were great so I stuck with it till the end. Rum punch def helps!

Real Men Knit | Kwana Jackson

Okay, stuff is starting to happen but although we‘re halfway through no men have knitted anything. I feel betrayed! Actually, all the knitting has been people thinking about having knitted something in the past. I do like the brothers - right now Damian is my fave because he told Kerry off because she knows “how to beat shit into the ground” - yep, that‘s exactly what she is doing.

Sooo ... Not sure about whether to stick with this one. The narrator of the audiobook is doing a great job and I really thought I‘d like it but I keep zoning out because nothing seems to happen and there‘s all this backstory/exposition/thinking (even in the middle of a dialogue) but not much plot so far. Does it get better once stuff happens? 🤔

Definitely shouldn‘t have read this part before teaching my own litter of tiny little show dogs. 😂 So very accurate ...

AutumnRLS I just gifted The House on the Cerulean Sea to a friend who is going through a tough time. It is the most lovely book I have read in a long time. It was exactly what my sad heart needed. Looking forward to reading this one too. It's been a busy year for Klune. 4y
Kaddele @AutumnRLS It‘s so lovely! I keep going back to it again and again when I‘m having a bad day. Extraordinaries is very different in tone with lots of action and it feels faster and more upbeat. But it‘s still got that loveliness when it talks about the character‘s real emotions and relationships among all the superhero madness. Just started to read Klune and quite impressed so far 😍 4y

Google For Dummies | Brad Hill

Student who is taking his A-Levels in English in two days‘ time has just asked me to send him an interpretation of The Road Not Taken because “there is nothing on the internet”. NOTHING ON THE INTERNET! 🤦‍♀️ Tempted to send him a link to this instead. Will join the league of oldies complaining about The Youth Of Today asap...

swynn For what it's worth, I work in an academic library, and I find that for every kid who thinks Google is for the hired help there's one who is amazing but never asks for help because they're too busy changing the world. 4y
Kaddele @swynn Oh absolutely - I‘ve got some amazing students who come up with the most amazing ideas seemingly out of nothing. I think all this homeschooling has made it more obvious, there are quite a few spoiled brats who haven‘t done anything to prep for the exams on their own and now expect others to do the work for them and then I‘ve got a group did an amazing job and organized a study group by themselves. 4y

Oookay, so that was unexpected - this was a recommendation from a friend and I wasn‘t convinced at first but I was so wrong! The narration is simply divine, the story & dialogue are hilarious and silly and the characters are adorable. Did I mention how fabulous the narration is? No? It‘s glorious - Michael Lesley is so dedicated to the story and so incredibly funny, it‘s just a pleasure to listen to. Definitely worth it just for that!

Kenyazero I only made it a page or two into this book. But I'm starting to pick up that I should give it another go. 3y
Kaddele @Kenyazero I‘m not sure if I would have stuck with the book if it wasn‘t for the audiobook tbh - but the narration was very entertaining so it made up for some bits that could have done with more editing. 3y

There it is - I‘ve only read a few pages so far, my Latin is far more rusty than I thought ...

Buechersuechtling Heeeey, thanks for tagging me. 😃 But honestly, I don‘t know if I shall laugh out loud or throw my hands up in horror. Seriously, _who_ is capable of translating this English into proper Latin⁉️😉 I‘m really surprised that there obviously is an audience for this. (I mean, for me it‘s easy, I don‘t speak Latin, but I‘m sure that you‘ll understand where I‘m aiming at. No offence meant.) But … Is it used in Latin classes at school❓🤔 4y
Kaddele I had the same reaction 🤪 - hope it‘s being used in classes, it‘s much more interesting than most of what we had to read. 🥱😴There are quite a few Latin translations of modern books - definitely The Hobbit, Winnie the Pooh and of course some volumes of Asterix. 4y

It's still Tuesday! Yay! Thanks @Buechersuechtling, I like those questions!

1. The tagged book - works well with a wee dram, or two, or ... er ... well.

2. I usually read English books in the original, with other languages it's either the English or German translation, whichever is available. There are a couple of French and Czech books on my shelves, as well as a Latin Harry Potter, although I find those hard to read.

Another blast from the past - got this edition as a Christmas present ages ago (1988 - I was 11!). Loved it to bits. It‘s got 17 out of the 18 volumes & it‘s pink. Best present ever! (If you‘re wondering - no, there is no previously unknown Blyton book about a girl called Dolly - these are the Malory Towers books. The German translation is ... interesting to say the least.) also, there are 12 extra volumes written by a German writer.
