The Mary Shelley Club | Goldy Moldavsky
54 posts | 40 read | 33 to read
New York Times-bestselling author Goldy Moldavsky delivers a deliciously twisty YA thriller that's Scream meets Karen McManus about a mysterious club with an obsession for horror. When it comes to horror movies, the rules are clear: x Avoid abandoned buildings, warehouses, and cabins at all times. x Stay together: dont split up, not even just to check something out. x If theres a murderer on the loose, do not make out with anyone. If only surviving in real life were this easy... New girl Rachel Chavez turns to horror movies for comfort, preferring stabby serial killers and homicidal dolls to the bored rich kids of Manhattan Prep...and to certain memories shed preferred to keep buried. Then Rachel is recruited by the Mary Shelley Club, a mysterious society of students who orchestrate Fear Tests, elaborate pranks inspired by urban legends and movie tropes. At first, Rachel embraces the power that comes with reckless pranking. But as the Fear Tests escalate, the competition turns deadly, and its clear Rachel is playing a game she cant afford to lose.

3 ⭐ I waited so long to read this book. I should have kept waiting. Rachael was attacked in her home and accidently killed her attacker. Flash forwards a year, she is in a new school, in a new city, trying to make friends and fit in. But her trauma has brought on a love of horror movies. She feels that by watching horror movies she can arm herself or train herself to not be frightened by what happened to her.

LibrarianRyan She ends up joining a secret society all about the love of a good scare. The purpose of the club is to scare people with frights that are prank like. But when people start getting hurt and even dying, this is no longer a prank, its life and death.

This book moved fast. It has a Gossip Girl crossed with The Game (old Michael Douglas Movie that is even mentioned in the book) feel with the poor kid in the elite private NYC school. The only
5mo
LibrarianRyan character I thought was genuine ends up dead. The concept is interesting and does work. The problem is it involves gamification, and that has been done much better. I do like that the story moves quickly and at no time does the book feel like the 460+ pages it is, and while I did enjoy it, the most memorable part of the entire thing, is the cover. While this is a standalone, and it does NOT have a cliffhanger, it has been left open for a seque 5mo
TheBookHippie I was wondering about this one. My daughter (35) loves Mary Shelley, I was thinking of it for her holiday book box. Thanks for your thorough review. 5mo

The ending is a serious punch to the gut. I‘m not even kidding. As fan of horror movies particularly the teen slasher genre of the 80s,90s and so on I really enjoyed reading the story. My rating for The Mary Shelly Club is four stars out of five. #TheMaryShellyClub

I too got suckered into the $5 book with drink purchase at B&N but I actually enjoyed it. A girl dealing with trauma trying to fit in and find her people but keeps getting betrayed. Easy to guess the ending and the who done it, but still a fun one. I think the Brooklyn setting made it for me- you could tell the author was from there like me. ⭐️⭐️⭐️ 1/2 stars!

Rachel is attacked and kills her attacker. A year later she is at a new school and joins this club - supposedly a horror fan club, but really they play cruel “pranks“ on people that they feel have wronged them. Rachel as MC is too flawed for me - constant thought of how bad she feels for defending herself but joins a club that hurts others the way she was - none of the characters are very likable. 25% in and I'm out -

Make a great day everyone 🍂

AuthorCjwhitcomb Thank you for this I'm on page 233 and hate every character, I'm trying like hell to finish it but I don't think I can, it's well written but these kids are just shitty spoiled rich kids getting revenge that's unjust and trying to justify it 9mo

I liked main character and it was easy to root for her.

This was really atmospheric read and I really loved that. I also loved how there were crafted different horror scenarios. I would have loved to have more thrilling moments because atmosphere was perfect but there weren't that many scary scenes.

This had a nice solid plot and good amount of action. With contemporary genre represented less this would have been even more intriguing.

Halloween (slasher horror, final girl) meets Gossip Girl (rich kids at an elite prep Manhattan prep school). This turned out to be a delightfully scary ride with an explosive climactic sequence and an ending that leaves open the possibility of a sequel (as any good slasher film would). I mostly predicted the twist/villain, but this did not take away from the experience at all.

The narrator for an audibook can really make or break a book. I did NOT click with the narrator of this one, I don't even think she was off base with how the character would sound. However I found it really difficult to get into because of the voice chosen, it made me really dislike the main character...in fact I didn't like any of them.

I absolutely love myself a good slasher high school book. I did like this book but there was definitely some things wrong with it. I feel like the author was really reaching for an ending you didn't see coming and I think she reached a little too far. Also there were a lot of characters and I didn't see very much character development. Also I wouldn't suggest the audio book, the narrator makes everyone sounds like a snob, it was hard to listen to.

I love a good high school horror novel. 🔪

This one wasn‘t the best one I‘ve ever read, but I did read it over two days on the tail end of a pretty severe reading slump, so that‘s saying something. I cared about some of the characters at the end and would likely pick up a sequel if the author writes one.
