This was an engaging listen with compelling characters, but I thought it left some of the most interesting questions unexplored and relied too much on a cultural fascination with “passing” that always seems problematic to me when it‘s left at a surface level.

It‘s different but so are the characters and the ways of life we don‘t discuss. I enjoyed it. I think it shows that we all struggle with insecurities and some form of discrimination along of own life path. You can let it define you or choose to overcome it.We are all different (there‘s beauty in that) but yet the same.

I loved the overall theme of finding who you are (or running from it). I also really loved Jude‘s character. It‘s hard because even though I might understand Stella‘s reasons, I could never leave my family.

Good but a little heavy-handed. Themes of identity, transformation, & memory are threaded through *every* *single* piece of the story.

I definitely found myself more invested once Jude (Desiree‘s daughter) & her boyfriend, Reese, entered the narrative. Their love story and individual tales of “becoming” were tender & engaging.

This was my first by Bennett but I own The Mothers ( courtesy of @Soubhiville ) & I‘m still eager to read it.

Soubhiville I think The Mothers is a little more subtle and definitely more unique. I hope you‘ll enjoy it! 3y
CarolynM I liked this one a lot, but I think I liked The Mothers more too. I'm certainly looking forward to seeing what she does next. 3y

Bailedbailed

I started listening to this book and had to restart it twice because I felt so lost right at the beginning. I gave up on it and while this is a bail for me, I would like to revisit it in print form to see if that makes a difference.

AutumnRLS I had issues with the audiobook as well. Not sure why, it just didn't hook me in. 3y

An engrossing, beautifully written story about twin sisters whose lives took on different paths after one major life choice. This book covers many grounds - from racism to abuse, gender identity, acceptance, yet doesn‘t feel heavy. Very much worth the hype, in my opinion.

RebelReader Will be starting this one next for book group. 3y

I checked the print copy of this out of the library, read about 1/3 of it, renewed it several times and finally had to return it because someone had it on hold. Yesterday, I noticed that the ebook copy was available and checked it out and finished it today. So many of the characters were not able to just be who they were, and that made me incredibly sad. I expected a different ending but was okay with the actual ending.

A friend loaned this, telling us it was the best book she read in 2020. I couldn‘t put it down. It‘s such a compelling story about identify: who we are born, how we are raised, and ultimately who we decide to be. There is a lot packed into just 343 pages and Bennett doesn‘t waste words. Anything that can be assumed is left out, leaving only the essentials. It‘s a great novel that avoids any easy judgements or moralizing. I really liked it.

I‘ve never done the #BFC21 challenge before. I‘m in a bit of a reading slump, but I know if I can make time to read, I‘ll pull myself out soon. Some accountability would be nice!
Book goal: 3 books (at least 1, hopefully 2, will be #BOTM reads)
Nutritional goal: drink 2 glasses of water per day. I‘m terrible at this and consequently, perpetually dehydrated.
@wanderinglynn

wanderinglynn Welcome to #BFC21! We‘re happy you‘re joining us. And great goals! 🙌🏻 3y
eanderson Little tip with the water, drink water before breakfast. It will help get it into your system and should help you start to crave it. Also, cut a lemon in half and squeeze the juice in it. That way it helps get that first glass of water down. Rooting for you! 😀 3y
PerksOfBeingABookworm @eanderson thanks for the tip! I have to take medicine in the morning and usually I drink enough to swallow the pill. I‘ll start drinking more and hope it helps me crave water. So far I‘m 2 for 2 on my goal! 3y

Desiree & Stella Vignes are twin sisters from Mallard Louisiana. Mallard is a town where although most of the population are light-skinned African Americans, racial discrimination & violence is a part of daily life. The sisters run away to New Orleans & eventually Stella disappears. Desiree attempts to track down her sister over the years. Stella has decided to pass as white & has formed a new life for herself. There are certain aspects of👇

vivastory Bennett's novel I think worked well. I found the sections that focused on Desiree & Stella's relationship to be the strongest. This is the emotional foundation of the book & the most rewarding in terms of character development. There are flashes of great writing as well. Vanishing Half feels ambitious, but I'm not sure it paid off. I liked, but didn't love this one. 3y
Megabooks I liked the discovery of/relationship between the cousins the most but maybe that‘s because I have cousins and not siblings. I also found the section where Stella is living in LA and the Black actor‘s family moves in across the street really interesting. I loved how Bennett explored Stella longing to find her sister in that woman, yet also being conditioned to be repulsed by her. 3y
vivastory @Megabooks I admit that the siblings' connection seemed the most interesting bc I have a sibling, so I think it's great that Bennett is able to reflect different family dynamics of readers. I agree, I was also really interested in that part too. It just felt like it moved around too much at times. 3y
See All 9 Comments
Megabooks I agree re: moving around. Sometimes just as I‘d get deep into a time or place, it would change and I‘d think, “no, wait!” 😂 (edited) 3y
BarbaraBB I have said it before but even though I liked this one, regarding the subject I think this one is so much better: 3y
AvidReader25 @BarbaraBB I just read that and felt the same way! I enjoyed The Vanishing Half, but Passing was incredible! 3y
BarbaraBB @AvidReader25 glad you felt the same! 3y
Vansa It's amazing to think that after all these years, Passing holds up as a classic- it must be close to a 100 years old now, no? 3y
Moray_Reads @Megabooks The main disappointment for me was that I felt none of the characters got the attention they deserved. I needed more detail of Stella/Desiree after they left Mallard. Would also have loved more development of Reese/Jude 3y

Third month that I had to get out my heat gun to dry my BOTM books. Does anyone know when we are going to get them shrink-wrapped again? I‘m not complaining, just wondering if anyone knows as we have many months of snow or rain coming our way. Yes I know I can always skip. Excited to have my January books 📚 just sad that the box they come in doesn‘t protect them. 😫

Unpopular opinion alert.

I really didn‘t like the first part and considered bailing at this point. I liked the second part told by Jude and decided to keep on reading. Jude was my absolute favorite with Stella as a way down second. And I didn‘t like that last part.

What is your favorite book published in 2020?

All of my books are packed and prepped to move. Since it will be a few weeks before I‘ll have the chance to open them, I‘ve been adding some new releases to my holds list at the library.

Drop your favorite newly published book below! ⬇️⬇️ All genres, historical fiction, literature, YA, nonfiction, graphic novel, middle grade.

Maybe I‘ll actually be prepared for the Goodreads Choice Awards this year!

Soubhiville If you feel like laughing I also liked this on audio: 4y
Gaylagal2 For sure it's my current read: The Ghosts of Harvard! And it's her debut novel, 10 years in the making. The author, Francesca Serritella is the daughter of Lisa Scottoline. And they have written together for many years, but this is her first (of many more I hope) novel all her own and it's brilliant 🤙 4y
