Ring Shout | P Djeli Clark
Nebula, Locus, and Alex Award-winner P. Djl Clark returns with Ring Shout, a dark fantasy historical novella that gives a supernatural twist to the Ku Klux Klan's reign of terror D. W. Griffith is a sorcerer, and The Birth of a Nation is a spell that drew upon the darkest thoughts and wishes from the heart of America. Now, rising in power and prominence, the Klan has a plot to unleash Hell on Earth. Luckily, Maryse Boudreaux has a magic sword and a head full of tales. When she's not running bootleg whiskey through Prohibition Georgia, she's fighting monsters she calls "Ku Kluxes." She's damn good at it, too. But to confront this ongoing evil, she must journey between worlds to face otherworldly nightmares--and her own demons. Together with a foul-mouthed sharpshooter and a Harlem Hellfighter, Maryse sets out to save a world from the hate that would consume it.

Oh my lord @Reggie I was so stressed out reading this book! But it was so GOOD! It‘s the kind of reading experience where you‘re tensing up ready to run or fight the whole time. And So Very Many Monsters.
I would think this novella would be enjoyed by people who like their historical fantasy a little dark and stabby. And after all who doesn‘t? 😂

This book is one of the most creative plot lines in a book I have read. I loved it! It is a mix of sci-fi/fantasy and a horror twist on Jim Crow South. It is basically a story about the release in 1915 of the movie "Birth of a Nation," and how it was used by white men to summon demons. The story is told through the eyes of the character, Marse, the kick-ass heroine in this book, who wields a sword and fights monsters. I loved this character.

Djeli Clark really is becoming one of my favourite authors. His ideas are so unconventional. I loved how he imagined KK-members as sort of zombies. It's another way of dealing with tragedies, pain and suffering. This book sends some strong Dread Nation vibes, and actually I could accept it as some sort of sequel.

I was listening to the audio book and it made great book even better. It was astonishing and amazing!

I have loved everything this author has written, and this book is no exception. Set in Georgia with a strong woman of color who fights the Ku Klux Klan (some of whom are actual monsters) with a magic sword — how could I not like it. I truly worried about Maryse too and was afraid of the consequences for her of some of her decisions.

Jari-chan I'm listening to the audio book right now and it's amazing! 7mo

🎧 I LOVED Sadie!

Another book set in the 1920‘s ~ISH. Macon GA. The movie Birth of a Nation puts a spell on America turning the KKK into Ku Kluxes ... demons. At least once I was thinking, WHAT THE F? 🤨

Maryse & her 2 co-hunters take on the demon Klan with their sword, bullets & bombs.

Fantastic narration!

A lot of grossness but racism is ugly so maybe not gross enough.

I hear this is like Lovecraft Country. Guess I‘m interested.

⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️

Set in 1920s Macon, Georgia, Ring Shout pits champion Maryse Boudreaux, with her sword forged from the spirits of the enslaved and a sharpshooter and Harlem Hellfighter at each side, against the forces of evil—not only the Klan but the “Ku Kluxes,” monsters colonizing our world through hate and racism. As action-filled as it is soulful, Ring Shout is ultimately a powerful, gruesome, and transcendent meditation on trauma, hate, grief, and survival.

Speculative fantasy/historical fiction that's well written, unique, and heart pounding. Clark has such a powerful writing style that you're left feeling like you just stepped out of an intense workout. The author's ability to deliver such astonishing social commentary in a world of monsters and monster hunters leaves me in awe.

Excellent horror novella that my only complaint of is that I wanted more. 😀

Finished this packs-a-punch novella as my sweetie drove us through the Cascade Mountains on our way home from San Juan Island. In 1915 evil forces use the film Birth of a Nation to turn Klansman into monsters called Ku Kuxes. Maryse and her fellow warriors face the hate. I don‘t usually read horror but this was a 4 star read for me

Horror/fantasy based in the reality of American racism. In 1922 Macon, GA, Maryse has a sword infused with the spirits of dead slaves. She uses it to kill Ku Kluxes, ie monsters who thrive on hatred and violence. The hatred grows like a virus and Maryse is the key to ending it unless she gets sucked into it. Another brilliant short novel from Clark. https://cannonballread.com/2021/02/ring-shout-or-hunting-ku-kluxes-in-the-end-ti...

This is one of those times when I think “what did I just read”? Or in my case “what did I just listen to”. I started this audiobook at least 3 different times because I kept getting lost. But notice, I never gave up because it‘s so weird you just have to see what is going to happen next. I loved it. It was such a different look at race, fantasy, magical realism, etc. And it leaves itself open for a sequel.

I've heard mixed things about this book. I thought the first few chapters were boring, but it picks up rather quickly after that. I really liked it. There seems to be room for a sequel so I really hope there is one. Something about it kind of reminded me of Alice isn't Dead (which I also loved). They both have monsters hiding in plain sight that feed off of hate, but Ring Shout has a more mystical aspect to it and is much darker.

The Klan is using a film to turn people into drones, there are monsters known as Ku Kluxes, but Maryse kills monsters, and she is ready to take them on. The author uses sources from Gullah-Geechee culture, folklore, and history to wind together this story. ↘️

ReadingEnvy I couldn't help but think we don't need fleshy monsters with tiny scary mouths to know that racism damages communities, but supernatural elements generate a more obvious monster to take on. I listened to the old Buddy the Vampire Slayer tv soundtracks while I read because it seemed appropriate. 11mo

Clark is someone whose books I immediately pick up without knowing a thing about them. He‘s so good a building a believable world and strong characters in very few pages. Amazing! This one is about a plot by the clan - some members of whom are literal monsters - to spread hate, and a group of anti-racism fighters. It‘s fun and fast and I loved the rich world he created!

Unpopular opinion ahead. This had all the right ingredients...strong female protagonists, monsters and racist idiots getting their comeuppance, but this just didn't do it for me. It felt like a missing episode from HBO's Lovecraft Country.
But don't let all that stop you. It could be a case of "it's just me".

LibrarianRyan No. I have started and stopped this audiobook twice. The first time I kept thinking I missed something. I just think I might not be in the right headspace. And the HBO makes sense because when I tried to watch it week to week , nope. But binged. Yep😁 11mo

P. Djeli Clark has a real gift for fitting incredible worlds full of history into short stories and novellas and this novella is no different.

In this world there are two types of Ku Klux Klan members: monstrous humans and literal monsters who seem to have crossed over into our world from another. Maryse uses her sword to fight the latter.

It's an incredible novella and I absolutely recommend it.
