The Kingdom of Back
The Kingdom of Back | Marie Lu
71 posts | 69 read | 86 to read
From #1 New York Times bestselling author Marie Lu comes a historical YA fantasy about a musical prodigy and the dangerous lengths she'll go to make history remember her--perfect for fans of Susanna Clarke and The Hazel Wood. Two siblings. Two brilliant talents. But only one Mozart. Born with a gift for music, Nannerl Mozart has just one wish--to be remembered forever. But even as she delights audiences with her masterful playing, she has little hope she'll ever become the acclaimed composer she longs to be. She is a young woman in 18th century Europe, and that means composing is forbidden to her. She will perform only until she reaches a marriageable age--her tyrannical father has made that much clear. And as Nannerl's hope grows dimmer with each passing year, the talents of her beloved younger brother, Wolfgang, only seem to shine brighter. His brilliance begins to eclipse her own, until one day a mysterious stranger from a magical land appears with an irresistible offer. He has the power to make her wish come true--but his help may cost her everything. In her first work of historical fiction, #1 New York Times bestselling author Marie Lu spins a lush, lyrically-told story of music, magic, and the unbreakable bond between a brother and sister.

My 3rd Marie Lu read and boy was it a frustrating one.

I don't remember much from reading Legend and the Young Elites (both first books of different series) but I do know this isn't the same as how I felt before.

I wanted to like this book more than I did. It was a fantast telling of Mozart and his sister and a magical land.
It was a very easy read.

The Kingdom of Back is beautifully written historical fantasy fiction that revolves around the Mozart siblings and their childhood composing and performing music around Europe.
This book had all the beats of a historical novel with pieces of magic and fairy tales but it was missing a little oomph and the juicy bits that keep me reading. I wanted to love it but I think it would have made a better novella or short story.

This was lovely fairytale inspired by a very young Mozart and his sister Nannerl (Maria Anna). The children create a fantasy world that starts to creep into reality. It combines my love of music and fantasy. It drags a bit at times but I still would recommend for fans of YA fantasy. 4⭐️ Another #bookspinbingo square done! #yafantasy

This fictional tale is so rich in imagination, yet so true in human nature, people want to be known for who they are. Mozart had a sister he loved dearly, & she had a desire to be remembered. Prodigies, they traveled Europe by day & visited the Kingdom of Back by night. In a "deal with the devil" she nearly trades her soul to desire. How rich we would be if genius wasn't lost for being a mere girl. Much world building; some tedious; a great story.

This book was really underwhelming. The plot was slow and the magic/fantasy parts didn‘t make any sense. I also found no reason to root for the main characters. However, the concept is really original.

This book was truly enchanting. This story is about the Mozart siblings. Nannerl and Wolfgang both dive into this fantastic world together but they soon realize that the Kingdom of Back is dangerous and their actions have consequences. I really enjoyed this book because it is based on a true story. Nannerl and Mozart actually did create their own universe called the Kingdom of Back when they were touring as children and Marie Lu made it real.

After a slow start, I was surprised to find that I enjoyed this whimsical read full of fantasy, perseverance, a loving sibling relationship, and the constraints of gender and it‘s expectations. I wasn‘t the biggest fan of the epilogue, but it did tie things up a bit nicely. In addition, I also liked that this book had not one, but two book maps!

A historical fiction account of Nannerl Mozart and her brother Wolfgang mixed with fantasy. Normally I really enjoy Marie Lu‘s works but for some reason I wasn‘t feeling the fantasy aspect and at times it was slow. Overall it was just okay for me but I enjoy the author‘s other works more.

Well I have wrestled with this book for a couple of days and am over a hundred pages in and am SO BORED. I also find the MC to be basically unlikable as she is completely self-obsessed with her entire life focus of trying to figure out how she can be FOREVER IMMORTALIZED, which, if I'm honest, is literally the opposite of my personal life-goal of being basically unnoticed haha

So apologies to my #LMPBC group, but I am moving on to my back-up ⬇️

TheAromaofBooks (cont'd) choice, which I'll tag here. This one just has too much modern tang (oh the horrors of the patriarchy, blah blah blah) to really pull me in to what is supposed to be historical fantasy.

I've seen a lot of positive reviews for this one, but it's just not my style. It's just SO SLOW.

TheAromaofBooks @Chrissyreadit - It's so ironic that I'm sure I'll keep it because it's so pretty even though I'll never read it! 😂 I read Entwined once a really long time ago & all I can remember is that I liked it, so I have higher hopes for it working out!! 2y
TheAromaofBooks @Laughterhp - If it sounds interesting to you, I would still give it a try as I have seen a lot of positive reviews for it. It just wasn't for me!! And maybe it's because my other two books are Moby-Dick and Northanger Abbey?? I need at least one book where SOMETHING is HAPPENING! 😂 2y
TheAromaofBooks @reluctantangeleno - I've just never been able to relate to the whole “I wish I was famous & I would do anything to make it happen“ kind of attitude. I care about the opinions of maybe a dozen people in my life & as long as they like me, I'm really not fussed about the rest of the world haha All I want to leave behind is a general impression of “she seemed pretty okay“ 😂 2y
reluctantangeleno @TheAromaofBooks Bahahhahaha, we are definitely soul sisters!! 2y

The Kingdom of Back was an absolutely enchanting historical fantasy (or maybe historical fairy-tale). The MC was Nannerl, the older, real-life sister of Mozart. And Marie Lu did a beautiful job writing this book against the backdrop of the Mozart siblings‘ early life.

I‘m not going to get another #bookspin bingo before the month‘s out, but I‘m quite pleased with my progress.

And another 2 hrs for a total of 7 for #24B4Monday

wanderinglynn As a side note, I didn‘t read the entire book in 2 hrs. I started this book 2 days ago. Also, #bookspin has definitely helped me cull my huge TBR stack (which I just refilled with a new Bookshop order 🤭🤫🤣) 2y

julesG Stacked. That cover😍. I just hope it's not too fairy-tale-y - I tend to bail on too whimsical stories. 2y
wanderinglynn I didn‘t think so. It definitely is grounded in historical fact (at least what little facts there are about Nannerl). The kingdom of back is the story that Nannerl makes up for Wolfrl. 2y

This book was just incredibly underwhelming. The book had an interesting premise and I liked the juxtaposition of classical musicians and magicians and the interweaving of music and magic but in the end, everything about this story felt insubstantial. I also felt that I have read this story numerous times before and nothing about it really felt new.

Overall it's just a really "meh" book.

tpixie I‘m only 1/2 way done, but it seems so far that a female‘s wish to be heard is bringing about evil. ( I guess that goes with the time back then? ). I don‘t trust the Princeling. 2y

This was a quick but enchanting read about the Mozart children. Imagined as a fairy tale adventure as the children grow. I especially enjoyed the attention to being a woman during this time period and what that meant for Nannerl, Wolfgang's sister.

Examines how history has limited artists to white men of means through a reimagined world of Mozart‘s sister. Fairytale elements are interwoven with history and biography to create a fascinating look at this time period where the Grimm Brothers and Marie Antoinette were the influencers of the day.

Interesting mix of historical fiction & fantasy. The writing is highly polished & flows easily. The plot is fairly methodical & moves at a steady pace. A comfortable & good read. The magical elements were thoughtful & whimsical with a lovely touch of darkness. There were a few moments of surprise & several pieces of high tension, but the plot overall holds no super surprising twists. I enjoyed my read without a doubt, but I was not blown away.

Easily my favourite Marie Lu book. It reminds me a lot of the blend of history and fantasy from The Light Between Worlds. I love that Lu didn't shy away from how sexism has in fact resulted in the loss of some amazing pieces of music, literature, inventions, etc simply because they weren't allowed to do that. I thankfully didn't feel lost despite being very uninformed on the creation of music.

I‘m sad I didn‘t enjoy this more, as it combines two of my favorite hobbies-music and fantasy fiction. It was very interesting learning about Mozart‘s sister, who was a gifted musician and composer in her own right. But the fantasy element was simplistic and didn‘t capture my interest. Maybe current events also are playing a role in my having little patience for stories that don‘t knock my socks off, but there you have it.

My reading is slow going these days - hmm, wonder why? 😳
This is a beautiful book - I‘ve always been fascinated with Mozart and his brief time on Earth, and his genius. To find out he had a sister who was equally as talented but unable to succeed as he did because she was a woman? These days, it seems ridiculous. Back then, it was commonplace. This was a dream book of Marie Lu‘s and she writes with such love in the acknowledgments. ❤️❤️❤️❤️
