I listened to the audiobook. Intriguing concept. Loved the beginning of the book, the middle was a little slow, and the end fell short.

But, what made this story for me, was the narration. Marin Ireland is absolutely amazing! Listening to her transform with each character was like listening to a stage play. She kept my interest.

Overall it was heartwarming story that I found uniquely satisfying and unforgettable.

I knew going in that it might be tricky to get past my own baggage about not wanting kids, in order to read about kids presenting unique challenges to their caretaker. If you go with the premise that everyone's a little F'd up by their parents, it's a very comforting read: the weird banding together. I'm left wishing for a better love interest for the main character, but happy with how things worked out for the kids. ⚠️ Suicide, child neglect

This was a weirdly cute quick read. It tells the story of a woman down on her luck who is asked to help out a college friend. It turns out to be a very unusual nanny job. It‘s hard to categorize, and does not always make sense. However, it is very charming and I really liked our main protagonist. 4⭐️

Kevin Wilson does a good job of drawing the reader in by opening the story with a first-person voice that establishes the tone and introduces secondary characters, which builds the dramatic conflict that leads to the inciting incident.

Super fun and quick read! I found the friendship between the two women very odd, but realizing it was written by a man makes more sense now. But Lillian‘s relationship with the kids was heart-warming!

⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ This was my first Kevin Wilson book and it was really quirky and charming with surprising heart. I remember being about 60 pages in and wondering if I‘m supposed to like the main character. I‘m definitely interested in reading more of Wilson‘s books if they‘re anything like this.

Book has huge heart & such well-drawn, memorable characters. Quirky & SO funny, w/ passages of great beauty. 28-yr-old Lillian is struggling when her friend Madison asks her to be nanny for her 10-yr-old twins on the grounds of her mansion. The catch: the kids spontaneously combust when upset. Friendship, class, power, competition, parenting, vulnerability & willful strength of children, love, stability, finding family. Badass tenderness. 2019

What else could you do
but pretend that you didn‘t know
that was possible in this world?

you ride it out and you don't let it hurt you
then there's this stretch of time
so calm and perfect
that's what was always worth waiting for

I sat on the porch, a perfect day
and watched them burn
Because I knew that when it was over
they would come right back to me

They didn't want to set the world on fire
They just wanted to be less alone in it

This reminds me so much of how I felt in the first weeks after my daughter was born, that I was an imposter but that maybe if I pretended long enough, I would grow into this person. And I did. But now that she's almost 17, I realize that it was just a temporary thing anyway. Not that I stop being her mother, but that I stop being her world. It's a big ask, stepping into and then out of this intense role. Who came up with this idea, anyway?

I rarely read books more than once, but this one I've now read twice in less than two weeks, once by myself and once out loud to my kids. I really enjoyed it both times, and my kids liked it, too, and not because of the swearing. (Or not *just* because of the swearing.) Wilson paints a vivid and truthful picture of what it's like to become a parent, no matter how you become one. I mostly made it through reading aloud without crying.

Making good on my promise to read the tagged book aloud to my kids. They're loving it, as expected. I enjoy doing a variety of southern accents, none of which are likely authentic (I've chosen Kentucky relatives for Lillian and use Dolly Parton and high school friends as inspiration for Madison).

(Amaryllis because I wasn't sure what other photo to use. My boss from 20 years ago gave this to me (last week, not 20 years ago) and they're gorgeous.)

ImperfectCJ Actually, my boss is from Tennessee, and I suspect she's influenced my accents, too. 2y

I listened to this on audio, but I might read it aloud to my kids. At 12 and 16, I think they'd get a kick out of it, and not just because of the swearing. There are lots of laugh-out-loud spots in this novel. I enjoy the relationship between Lillian and Madison and the evolution of Lillian's feelings about the children, and I relate to Lillian's feelings of trapped-ness in her mother's home and how being away makes the dysfunction stand out.

catiewithac I loved this book!! 🔥 2y

I was pleasantly surprised with this book. It was genuine, funny, heartfelt and always teetering on the brink of being dark. The audio was great (and quick). Similar to House in the Cerulean Sea by the sweet, weird, sad and magical beauty of it all not so much by actual content. I will definitely be reading more from Wilson.

The storyline of two kids who spontaneously catch on fire seems almost comical but Nothing to See here is anything but lighthearted. Families often break apart in hap-hazardous ways but so too do they come together that way. Plus, Wilson‘s characterization and narration of Lillian and Madison was simply a treat. They had such a sturdy realness to them that was neither cut-throat nor weak and wanting.

This was a quick read about a set of 10 year old kids who spontaneously combust into flames. The story itself is a sweet one when Lillian comes to take care of them for the summer. All three have had rough lives and they all learn to trust each each other and be there for one another. This is my book club‘s June pick.

A friend of mine recommended this memoir on audiobook, so I decided to dive into it this weekend. About 30 min in and children are spontaneously bursting into flames when they are upset. Either I‘ve mixed up the name of the book, or this is one helluva memoir...😂🤣😂

I thought the cover was being metaphorical 🤷‍♀️
