Pan's Labyrinth: The Labyrinth of the Faun
Pan's Labyrinth: The Labyrinth of the Faun | Cornelia Funke, Guillermo Del Toro
Fans of dark fairy-tales like The Hazel Wood and The Cruel Prince will relish this atmospheric and absorbing book based on Guillermo del Toros critically acclaimed movie. Oscar winning writer-director Guillermo del Toro and New York Times bestselling author Cornelia Funke have come together to transform del Toros hit movie Pans Labyrinth into an epic and dark fantasy novel for readers of all ages, complete with haunting illustrations and enchanting short stories that flesh out the folklore of this fascinating world. This spellbinding tale takes readers to a sinister, magical, and war-torn world filled with richly drawn characters like trickster fauns, murderous soldiers, child-eating monsters, courageous rebels, and a long-lost princess hoping to be reunited with her family. A brilliant collaboration between masterful storytellers thats not to be missed. Perfectly unsettling and deeply felt, this reminded me of the best kind of fairytales wherein each chapter is a jewel that, when held up to the light, reframes how we see the world around us. Roshani Chokshi, New York Times bestselling author of The Star-Touched Queen and Aru Shah and the End of Time A fearless and moving adaption of the film, and a gorgeously written, emotional, frightening parable about the courage of young women amid the brutality of war. A tale of despair! I wouldn't recommend it as a bedtime story for children. Ofelia is a child who endures sadness, pain, and death at such a young age. (Check trigger warnings) I highly recommend this if you like dark atmospheric reads with life and death intermingling together to teach us all lessons.

Pan's Labyrinth The labyrinth of the Faun ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐
The movie is one of my favorites, so finally got to read the book... Had to finish it in one sitting because I couldn't put it down. Just as dark as the movie, maybe not as graphic.
Ps: I am in love with this cover, found it at at thiftstore for a dollar.

This book was beautiful, heartbreaking, and terrifying in spots all at once. Cornelia Funke did an excellent job bringing the movie into print form. One of my favorites reads for #Scarathlon2022.

I guess I was expecting a lighter version of the movie since this is targeted towards middle grader readers, but it was still very, very dark. Way more intense than I would have been able to handle as a kid... visually, it was amazing - the illustrations and overall design were beautiful! #scarathlon #teammonstermash @StayCurious

Absolutely stunning. That‘s the only way I can describe it. While I remember loving the movie, upon reading this, it feels like it started it‘s life as a book, not a film. Poignant, dark, and absolutely gorgeous.

1. My favorite fantasy movie is Pan‘s Labyrinth. So striking.

2. My favorite fantasy character is Alice. I feel like I can relate to her too much 😂

3. Well sometimes. When something throws me off and I can‘t get my emotions in check and can sometimes throw a tiny tantrum.

ElizaMarie My husband hasn‘t seen Pan‘s and I loved it so much! I keep telling him he needs to watch it but he hasn‘t been in a “place” to watch it — like he couldn‘t fully focus... but it‘s so so beautiful. I worry that I have hyped it up so much! 3y

Violent, complicated, and not for the faint of heart. Compared to the movie, this goes more indepth into the fairy tale's backstory. Feels like a modern Macbeth.

Recommended for adults or older teens who can handle the dark side of humanity. Fans of Neil Gaiman, Holly Black, or Stephen King may like this. Content warning for death and torture. #dw2020reads #audiobooks

This fairy tale *could* be fantastic for teens or grown-ups who think they're too old for them. Only 11% in, so I'll keep ya posted.

I wanted to love this one but never really felt into it. I had to switch to the audiobook because I wasn‘t making time to read the physical book. There‘s a lot going on right now, so my mindset is geared more toward fun, light reads. Maybe I‘ll revisit this one another time. At least it marked off another tbr and was my #doublespin for #bookspin

This was a gimme' as far as me loving it. I love the movie and anything that gave me extra insight into this fairy tale world was going to be a winner.
Be warned, this is a graphic and violent story set during the civil war in the Spain. But this is totally my wheelhouse of graphic and gritty fairy tale with a fantastical aesthetic that I love.
4.5/5 Stars.

Set against the backdrop of fascist Spain 1940s this is a dark & heartbreaking tale of a young girl‘s imaginative journey to another kingdom filled with fantastical creatures, while soldiers are killing rebels in the real world. A mix of dark fantasy and politics, the book captures the evils of war very well. Great for those who like magic & a little darkness in their reads.

I loved this movie when I first saw it, so when the book came out recently, I knew I had to read it. 💚

The illustrations are so amazing! Yet again I was transported to a world were magic exists and creatures and humans work together to overcome the terrible tragedies that humans inflict on one another. Very well done. 😍

This book is listed in the Juvenile section, but it might not be appropriate for all young readers due to the violence.

I was a little hesitant to read this b/c it was shelved as YA, and one of the aspects of the movie I loved was that it so perfectly captured the essence of fairy tales: gaping wounds, murdered children and all! Thankfully, Funke's novelization is every bit as dark and magical as Del Toro's film.
