The Ones That Got Away
The Ones That Got Away | Stephen Graham Jones
4 posts | 4 read | 14 to read
These thirteen stories are our own lives, inside out. A boy's summer romance doesn't end in that good kind of heartbreak, but in blood. A girl on a fishing trip makes a friend in the woods who's exactly what she needs, except then that friend follows her back to the city. A father hears a voice through his baby monitor that shouldn't be possible, but now he can't stop listening. A woman finds out that the shipwreck wasn't the disaster, but who she's shipwrecked with. A big brother learns just what he will, and won't, trade for one night of sleep. From prison guards making unholy alliances to snake-oil men in the Old West doling out justice, these stories carve down into the body of the mind, into our most base fears and certainties, and there's no anesthetic. Turn the light on if you want, but that just makes for more shadows.

Hi campers!

Barbara, Meg and I thought you‘d like to see the books that didn‘t make it onto the long list for #camplitsy23. As you know there were MANY wonderful books nominated, so these are your faves that received 3 or more nominations.

The Ferryman didn‘t make it as it‘s a bit too long for a 2-week read, and all of the others weren‘t available in the UK in time for camp.*

Don‘t forget to vote if you haven‘t done so yet! Link below ⬇️

squirrelbrain * there were also books that were nominated in the UK but not published in the US in time, just not as many…. The UK publishing dates seem to be way behind the US, as a rule! 12mo

Cinfhen Thanks for sharing! Can‘t wait to see the final 6 🤩 12mo
Bookwormjillk Thanks for this! I am counting down the days until we see the final 6! 12mo
Hooked_on_books I was curious about The Late Americans not being on the list. I thought it came out in the UK the same day as the US, but I don‘t have much of a way of knowing these things. Such a bummer, as I was hoping it would be one of our books, but we definitely want everyone to have access! And Hello Beautiful is just wonderful. I liked The Ferryman a lot, too (I somehow scored an early copy, which felt like winning the lottery)! 12mo
squirrelbrain It‘s the 22nd June over here @Hooked_on_books so just a tiny bit too late for people to get hold of. I have it on #netgalley, along with Hello Beautiful, which is mid-July over here. Looking forward to both, when I can get to them! #somanybooksolittletime 🤪 12mo
Magpiegem Oh no… I‘m in the UK and I nominated The Celebrants 🤦🏻‍♀️ obviously didn‘t do my research properly! 😂 12mo
BarbaraBB I screenshot these as if the longlist is not doing enough damage to my TBR 🤦🏻‍♀️ 🤣 12mo
squirrelbrain That‘s OK @Magpiegem ! The Guncle was bad enough to get hold of in the UK anyway - it was ridiculously expensive for ages. I‘m hoping this one won‘t be the same when it gets published. 12mo
Megabooks @Hooked_on_books I really wanted Americans (as I‘ve pre-ordered it), but we had to draw a line somewhere. And I also loved HB and think it would‘ve made a great discussion book. Those and Half Moon were the ones that broke my heart the most. Still, we‘re getting some great votes in! Very excited for how the winners are shaping up so far. 👍🏻🏕️ (edited) 12mo
JamieArc Thanks for sharing this! 12mo
Soubhiville Thanks for this post! We‘ll just have to enjoy them all on our own I guess 🙃📚 12mo
CatMS Looked at these that didn't make the long list and have to confess there are only one or two that interest me on this list. Looking forward to the long list. Thanks ladies for your hard work on #CampLitsy23 12mo
TheAromaofBooks I'm still working my way through checking out all the books on the longlist! 😂 12mo
CBee @squirrelbrain two of those are ones I chose and I just figured the publishing dates were wonky. Still so excited to see what gets chosen! A lot of nominations were ones I want to read anyway 😊👏🏻 12mo
Larkken I‘ll throw them down at the end of my copy of the long list! Looks like it‘s another source for years worth of reading for me and I still haven‘t figured out my top 6! I Promise I‘m getting there… 12mo
AmyG Oh, thanks for posting this! 12mo
Ruthiella Good to know. Accessibility is key if we want everyone to have a chance to read along and I did not pay any attention to length when choosing, which can be critical. Thanks! 😃 12mo
squirrelbrain @Larkken @TheAromaofBooks - we‘re looking forward to your nominations! 12mo
Hooked_on_books I‘m itching to know what‘s high up in the voting. Want to give us any hints? 😬 12mo
ChaoticMissAdventures It was such a long list a quarter of the way through I forgot what I had nominated in the first place!! So many good books. Thanks for all your hard work sorting through them. 12mo
robinb I‘ve read four of these and definitely recommend them to anyone‘s TBR list. (Beautiful, Ferryman, Moon & Clover) 😊 12mo
squirrelbrain Well, seeing as it‘s you Holly @Hooked_on_books , the top 3 are….. only kidding! My lips are sealed.😇 12mo
squirrelbrain I really want to read all 4 of those @robinb - I have Beautiful and Moon as ARCs. 12mo
Hooked_on_books Drat! Well, I had to try. 🤷🏼‍♀️ 12mo
BkClubCare I am most looking forward to Hello Beautiful and the Stradal ❤️ Thanks for sharing! (I was wondering why they weren‘t there - thx for explaining) 12mo
robinb @squirrelbrain I think you‘ll enjoy them. 😊 12mo

I recently read a short story collection by this author and loved it. I did not love this collection though.

Each story felt like the author was trying too hard and the twists seemed forced. I'll still read his other books though, this one just wasn't for me.

Pickpick

Thirteen brilliantly written, seriously creepy stories.

You know that thing when you‘re reading good horror and you‘re just really uncomfortable and kinda want to stop but keep going because you have to know and then you finish and can‘t stop being creeped out and can‘t sleep for a while? I had that feeling more than once... and can‘t sleep right now. Wait... did you hear that?!? 😳

The story notes are 👌🏻 too. #authorcrush

Thanks to @SGJ , I was late to work because I couldn't stop reading this. (No hard feelings, though.)

SGJ Thank you. I can write a note to your boss, maybe? 7y
ohyeahthatgirl @SGJ Thanks, but I work in a bookstore so I convinced her it was sales research. Then I put Mongrels on our Blind Date with a Book table, so not even a lie. 7y
SGJ Too cool. Thanks. Thanks for setting Mongrels up. 7y
Hooked_on_books I'm liking the trippyness of this cover. 7y
