Charlotte Brontë (21 April 1816 – 31 March 1855) was an English novelist and poet, the eldest of the three Brontë sisters who survived into adulthood and whose novels became classics of English literature. She is best known for her novel Jane Eyre, which she published under the gender neutral pen name Currer Bell. Jane Eyre went on to become a success in publication, and is widely held in high regard in the gothic fiction genre of literature. ??

I finally read Jane Eyre and I can see the hype! So much happening in this novel! I think as a modern reader my reception is likely different as there was not any moment during this novel that I liked Mr Rochester. He bugged the hell out of me. Just the biggest red flag all of the time. Not one endearing quality for me. (Cont. in comments 👇🏻👇🏻👇🏻)

i.z.booknook (2) Also for me it was way too far fetched that she happened to turn up at the house of her long lost cousins (the Rivers), I did struggle to overcome that coincidence. Nevertheless, I really liked Jane, despite falling for one of the worst guys ever, she seems really level-headed and is a good narrator. 2mo
i.z.booknook (3) It moves at a really good pace with so much happening so is really engaging. Like Agnes Grey, it is a really good insight into the life of Governesses and even more so than Agnes Grey it goes into power dynamics, so, whilst I don‘t like Mr Rochester, I appreciated that Jane fought for her place and returned when they were on an even footing. 2mo
i.z.booknook (4) The prose was also spectacular; somehow simultaneously simple, to the point, and detailed and thoughtful. Now to watch the film and see how it measures up! 2mo

I had not read this since I was a teen. It is sometimes difficult to read these books without overlaying today‘s social mores and attitudes. Jane is just so young. And whilst Rochester is nowhere near the worst of the heroes of these novels, I did not like the way he teased her and threw his relationship with other women in her face.
I listened to this as a prelude to re-reading Wide Sargasso Sea, which I previously loved.

Thank you for tagging me, @Eggs

1. Jane Eyre - she just came along when I needed her most and I was so impressed by her.
2. Zofia (The Gilded Wolves) - she's just WOW! The way she faced her fears and grew is just amazing!
3. Gideon the Ninth/Harrow the Ninth/Nona the Ninth - they all sort of belong together and are just kick-ass in their own ways.

I also kept on thinking about Murderbot 😅

My book club picked this one as our first read of the year and I‘m looking forward to hearing what everyone thought tomorrow! I listened to it this time around and Thandie Newton‘s performance was really wonderful! Obviously no surprises but it was nice to remember parts that I had forgotten- and it‘s easy to see why this is one of the classics that continues to be popular as it is over 175 years old! Dear Reader, I loved listening to it!

Charlotte's writing is so beautifully descriptive and engaging and her world-building so engrossing that you can picture every element of the story so vividly. Her characters come alive on the page. Rochester has his issues, of course, but is also a well written, well developed, complex character and the story itself is a good one. I would definitely recommend it for someone who wants to get lost in a good book for a while!

Jane Eyre was on my wishlist for a long time. Glad that I waited to listen to this narration. Thandiwe Newton is brilliant - bringing the characters and the slow narrative to life.

Funnily, I read Wide Sargasso Sea before I listened to Jane Eyre. But, the competing narratives really offered a very well rounded experience. Recommend.

As an Indian it felt strange and frustrating listening to them romanticise colonisation and forced conversions.

I wanted to read this for a long time. But, once again another Bronte sister book I wouldn‘t say was a great love story. Both options for Jane were horrible. One only wanted a great worker and the other was manipulative. Mr.Rochester had some good qualities like actually loving Jane. I liked Jane‘s character a lot. She was strong and held to her principles. Also, the twist of fate, fortune and family was delightful. I enjoyed the book and ending.

I enjoyed this reread with the #pemberlittens a lot. As always, the chapter-a-day pace helped me notice details I would have missed otherwise, and I loved the daily posts and memes.
The book was darker than I remembered (esp. her childhood), and like other readers, I noticed more red flags about Rochester this time around. But he got his punishment and seemed to learn from it, so I'm okay with the ending.

Perhaps the most fun thing about reading this book #chapteraday for #pemberlittens was making the memes! ??
This was my first time reading this classic and my second book by a Brontë sister (the other one was Wuthering Heights). The sisters seem to have a taste for the supernatural and sick romance. The plot was well written, despite the love interests.

i.besteph Even the side characters had better personalities than them.
Jane‘s a favorite although her choices are questionable. She‘s strong for a 19th century protagonist. She has impeccable strength and pain tolerance. Rochestor‘s okay. He would‘ve been likable if he had apologized in the end. St. John‘s a big NO. Helen was the one I missed the most.
I‘d definitely read it again.

Jane: I see that there are three types of men in the world: Abusive, Mansplaining, and Liar. Ooh, I pick Liar!

To be fair, while mansplaining doesn‘t sound as bad as lying to me, St. John is so egregious that Liar is actually a better choice.

And they all lived happily ever after, except St. John, who died happily ever after.

#PemberLittens

lauraisntwilder 🤣 Yes!! 1y
i.besteph Great review! 😂💯 1y
nanuska_153 You pose an interesting question, although both the liar and the mansplainer are disrespectful as partners and I can see why lying is objectively worse; I think I'd still pick the liar, I mean, at least he'd try to hide his disrespect; the mainsplainer would disrespect me to my face... and quickly die for his crime😅 1y

Chapter 37:
Reader, we‘re almost done….and so the lovers unite!

Rochestor is half blind and lost an arm. Probably a harsh thing to say but his suffering brought out the good in him. He mentions how he searched for Jane in vain, but the best part (for me at least) was when they perceived they could hear each other miles apart.
Flawed as they are, that‘s some type of love people only dream to have Definitely a wholesome chapter🥰

DebinHawaii The #chapteraday #buddyread with the #PemberLittens is probably my 5th reading of this book, the latest one about 11 years ago. Although I have not had romantic illusions of Rochester in any rereading, I think the daily chapter focus makes him even more dismaying as a romantic lead, although much better of course than St. John. That being said, I love Jane & am always glad when she gets her happy ending. Thanks to our hosts for the daily fun. 🤗 (edited) 1y

I have very different impressions than those of my first read,I'm shocked that I used to love Rochester so much that I was oblivious to all those red flags, although I have to confess that in the end I find him so funny that I nearly forgave him for everything again. I loved this book the first time I read it and my deeper understanding of how dark Jane's relationships are makes me like it even more. My admiration for Jane as a character and for⬇️

nanuska_153 Charlotte as her writer only increased. Jane is so well drawn that she feels real, even when she manages to reach the perfect combination of goodness and strength; of generosity and being capable to sacrifice herself for others and at the same time have the fortitude to set very clear boundaries. I loved her as a fool teenager, I love her as a fool adult and I know I'll love her every time I revisit her #Pemberlittens 1y

Jane takes off to find Rochester after hearing his voice calling to her on the wind (peak Gothic Novel activity here). She comes across Thornfield, now a burned-out ruin of its former self, and gets the story out of an inkeeper: Mrs. Poole succumbed to the ol' gin and water one night, and Bertha stole her keys, busted out of her cell, and indulged in some arson. The fire blinded Rochester, who's now living in seclusion at Ferndean- go, Jane, go!

nanuska_153 I find everything John does so oppressive, that little note implying that Jane was about to swear to God that she would marry him...he is so determined that the things that go through his mind are happening in reality that it almost fools Jane into believing it. Have to share this post of Sparknotes, brilliant as always.
St John leaves, passing a creepy note underneath Jane's door on his way out *we all shudder*Jane goes to Thornfield, which is much further than I imagined,to find it burnt out.The owner of the inn explains that Bertha burnt it and died,Rochester survived "but he had better be dead", Jane fears the worst, but the owner of the inn is just dramatic, Rochester is only blind #Pemberlittens

Ruthiella It‘s interesting to me how Rochester has to be physically maimed and no longer that imperious, powerful manly man to become Jane‘s true partner. 1y
nanuska_153 @Ruthiella agreed,I think this is the Rochester that I fell in love with and made me forget how awful he was.In general is a man connected with his emotions,he was never afraid of crying in front of Jane, but he was too worried about not needing anybody to be a true partner;now that he found real vulnerability he is happy to embrace it and surrender to Jane. Also I find him quite funny and after suffering "St" John,he is like a breeze of fresh air 1y

After she rejects him, St. John gives Jane the cold shoulder for a bit, but eventually he tries again to talk at her until she reconsiders his work-based sham "marriage" plan. Our girl isn't having it, though, and even St. John's sisters are like, "yeah, no" about the whole thing. Then one night after some fiery reading from Revelations (kill me now), Jane feels her "no" become a "maybe"...but then she hears Rochester 's ghost voice from afar!

Buckle up, folks, because today St. John offers Jane quite possibly the WORST proposal in literature. Worse than Darcy's "inferiority of your connections" and worse than Rhett Butler proposing at Frank's actual funeral, this asswaffle is like, "I will never love you, and I only want you for the work you'll provide." Jane gives a rager of a comeback with "I scorn the counterfeit sentiment you offer: yes, and I scorn you when you offer it." ???

BarkingMadRead 🤣🤣🤣 1y
nanuska_153 😂😂😂 I agree, I thought Rochester was in for the win, with his plan of firing Jane, pretending he is going to marry another woman and confessing he actually proposed to her before proposing to Jane and was rejected; but at least there was love somewhere behind those awful moves. St John somehow managed to combine the worst of Darcy's and Mr Collin's proposals, it is quite a feat come to think of it 1y
Andrea313 @nanuska_153 THANK YOU! Sadly I ran out of room and couldn't mention Jane's FIRST disappointing proposal. Man, Charlotte doesn't exactly set a high bar for romance; these dudes are just grim. 1y
