Shirley, by Charlotte Bronte | Emily Bront, Charlotte Bront, Anne Bront

It was a bit of a slow start with this book, but once the title character enters the scene it‘s been an absolute treat. Jane Eyre will always be my favourite of Charlotte‘s work, but Shirley is quickly becoming a firm favourite. I love spirited & intelligent heroines, & Shirley is the very definition of this. If you haven‘t read this one, I highly recommend it. I‘ve even laughed out loud at a couple of parts, always a sign of a good book.

batsy I put this off for a long time until some of us did a buddy read on Litsy and I was surprised by how much I enjoyed it. I mean, it's Charlotte after all but still, it was a nice surprise ❤️ 3d
catebutler @batsy I definitely think reading this as a group was the nudge I needed too. I honestly haven‘t heard that much about her lesser known works, so this one was never at the top of my list to get to. It‘s interesting though, I just found out, several historical figures praised this book, including Vincent Van Gogh. Interesting indeed! 2d
batsy @catebutler I love Van Gogh, and it's so cool to learn that he liked this too! Thanks for that 🙂 2d

I‘m going with a classic #iconic figure, Charlotte Bronte. I can‘t imagine growing up in such an isolated place and yet crafting arguably one of the best loved novels ever. This recent biography is on my tbr list - another book I started when it first came out, had to put down, and haven‘t had a chance to pick it up again. I adore the cover! #Movember

Also, I woke up to see so much concern over personal fears on not doing Litsy right - be you! ⬇️

Librarybelle These fears show me I‘m in the right place, because I honestly felt the same way, yet feared (haha) mentioning it. Did I post my cats too much? Anyone super annoyed over my buddy read posts? Then, I thought, just be myself. This is my happy place, and I really feel blessed to know all of you. You‘ll never know how much you help me! ❤️❤️❤️ to all! 2w
Sace @Librarybelle I wonder if people have the same fears on bigger social media outlets. The fact that we are having this conversation makes me think not. We are less "anonymous" here. I like that intimacy 2w
ljuliel Agreed. You guys just post. The older I get, the more I realize I can‘t please everyone , so I just say what I think. I‘m not too concerned about winning popularity contests. Life‘s too short. Be yourself. @librarybelle @Sace (edited) 2w

Librarybelle @Sace Agreed. We‘ve developed a close relationship in here compared to other social media sites. 2w
TheAromaofBooks One of the things I love about Litsy is how personal it feels. I think the lack of political discussions around here really helps us all to focus on more happy things than other social media! Also, side note, I don't really think it's possible to post about cats too much, so keep up the good work. :-D 2w
Billypar I like the cats: my apartment doesn't allow them, so I feel like I'm living vicariously through the #catsoflitsy And to my knowledge, no one has suggested that we ditch the books and change the name to Catsy (though, wouldn't be bad as its own social media app 😸) 2w
Mollyanna I love the focus on books with the accoutrement of life on Litsy!! It‘s a beautiful balance. And I totally agree, you be you, and @Librarybelle You are awesome! 2w
batsy Charlotte! ❤️ I want to read this, too. 2w
Librarybelle @TheAromaofBooks @Billypar Catsy! Now that‘s an app I would download! I think animals are perfect reading companions and love to see everyone‘s pets. 2w
Librarybelle @Mollyanna Thank you! 😊 2w

Just a note to say that I'm opting OUT of #JB, but staying IN #LITSYLOVE and #JBUK. However, if you were IN #JB and I've tagged you above I'm keeping your addresses as we've become friends!

It's not that you're not all my friends, I'm just struggling with who is in which group!

I'm keeping the pile of addresses on the right! 🤣🤣🤣

CatLass007 So glad you‘re keeping me! 😘😘😘 2mo

@Tamra here's some more books on Jane Austen. I haven't read them all but 4 of these are written by well-known literary or Jane Austen scholars. Will tag the rest in comments. I haven't read The Secret Sisterhood one - I know it features other authors but they may crop up in your modules!

jenniferw88 I haven't read this one either 2mo
jenniferw88 Haven't read this one either, but may be of the most use to you 2mo

The Professor: A Tale | Charlotte Bront
post image

I enjoyed the book, although it could be hard to get through at times. The story follows the life of The Professor, and his search for happiness in a professional capacity as well as in love. He finds both and settles into a life. That pretty much sums up the book.

Luddite is a pretty pejorative term now but the destructive of new technology in northern English mills into the early 1800s was a protest over working conditions and deskilling during a time of economic upheaval. Shirley is set against this backdrop in West Yorkshire. #ayupaugust #IPredictARiot @Cinfhen @squirrelbrain

saresmoore It was Shirley that really helped me understand Luddite for the first time. History really does repeat itself. 3mo
squirrelbrain I really should reread this one - haven‘t read it since I was a teen and I‘m sure it didn‘t mean much to me then.... 3mo

I just got a new phone and can't figure out how to take screen shots. 🙄 So this is an audiobook that I own and I LOVED it! I collect all things Bronte and thoroughly enjoyed this book. Normally for my audiobooks I use #libro and #hoopla through my library. I'm a big fan of multitasking and audiobooks are perfect for that! 😁
