Founder and CEO Elizabeth Holmes ran Theranos like a cult. I‘m not sure if she‘s a sociopath or just deeply delusional. Her technology that was to allow dozens of lab tests to be analyzed from a few drops of blood never worked. Employees who acknowledged this were either fired or told they didn‘t know what they were doing. Holmes, who will go on trial in 2020, seems remorseless. Excellent investigative journalism.

A gripping story of Elizabeth Holmes fraud and the people impacted directly. However I was irked by the authors use of "describe physical appearance", but this person was really smart.

It's as if people who aren't perfectly attractive and put together can't be assumed to be intelligent in his mind.

It reads like fiction, but it's not. This book covers the absorbing, unbelievable story of Elizabeth Holmes and her fraudulent "revolutionary" lab company, Theranos, told by the investigative journalist who broke the story. The potential impact to patients' health is horrifying, as Holmes touted lab tests that gave massively inaccurate results. Yet she pulled the wool over the eyes of many intelligent, prominent people.

Highly recommended.

Expanding on his exposé of Theranos, Carreyrou briefly details Elizabeth Holmes' background and her founding of Theranos. The sketchy details that mar the beginning of this endeavor are presented as they develop, and it makes this story even more astounding/horrifying. This book is very readable despite the science behind it (or science allegedly behind it). Carreyrou makes real and human the people who were chewed up and spit out by Theranos.

What a wild story! This is a nonfiction account of the rise & fall of Theranos and it‘s going CEO Elizabeth Holmes. From their false claims of successful blood testing with a single finger prick, to her faked deep voice, to the insane working conditions, constant employee turnover, threats, and lawsuits, it‘s almost unbelievable that this company was able to swindle investors out of billions of dollars. It‘s well written and fascinating.

At first, I was a little put off by the author (male) and every interviewee (mostly male) about their perspective of Elizabeth Holmes and the events surrounding Theranos in Bad Blood. However, it became pretty clear that she was the problem. There might've been some biases and sexism, but that had nothing to do with her decisions and deceit. ⭐⭐⭐⭐/5

I know I am one of many saying the same thing but what is this fuckery? 🤯😤 I keep looking at the time stamp like, how can there be more? Why are there still so many hours? WHAT ELSE CAN HAPPEN???

The most telling thing for me is that when young Elizabeth is asked what she wants to be when she grows up she says a Billionaire. Despite what I‘ve seen in interview clips, it was never about helping or saving people. It was about accumulating power.

Urgh, I had a whole review typed out for this but then lost it!

TL;DR version: this was a fascinating listen, and I‘m glad I did it on audiobook, as it felt like listening to an extra long podcast season. It still seems so unbelievable how dishonest and vindictive Holmes and Sunny were, and that neither of them are really experiencing adequate punishment for their fraud. Stray thoughts below 👇🏼

Kimberlone I think Carreyrou was trying not to verge into double standards about women‘s appearance, but I missed having any significant commentary on Elizabeth‘s very obvious affectations in appearance and persona. He comments upon her obsession with Steve Jobs and how that manifested in her presentation, but not on her hair or, more obviously, her voice. These were things that stood out to me so much watching the documentary. (edited) 4mo
Kimberlone Carreyrou did a great job of explaining how dysfunctional Theranos‘s company culture was - it makes me think that maybe had Elizabeth been more open to constructive criticism and not entrusted Sunny, that maybe they would have been more successful in creating the product she originally envisioned. (edited) 4mo
Dolly I think she mixed up “Dont take no for an answer” with “when someone says ‘no‘ fire them” 😂 4mo
Itchyfeetreader This is high on my list of most fascinating reads of the year. Her absolute unshakeable belief she was right and should not listen or adjust course in any meaningful way blew my mind (edited) 4mo

WHAT A RIDE. The story of the Theranos scam is compulsively readable, absolutely unbelievable, but somehow true. Carreyrou reports this story meticulously, without losing his readers' attention to the detail. I still can't really believe that Holmes managed to convince so many powerful and respected people to invest and work in a business in pursuit of a product that fundamentally couldn't do what it proclaimed to. Such is the power of privilege.

Still about Bad Blood 😅 I realized that the book focused mainly on how bad Holmes and Theranos management was (yeah, we get it - they were horrible!). It would be nicer if the book focused more on Carreyrou‘s investigation process, just like the story about how Boston Globe‘s Spotlight team uncovered child sex abuse cases by Roman Catholic priests. That‘d be nice!

squirrelbrain I thought that some more about his investigation would have been really interesting, but it seemed as though many of his sources wanted or needed to remain anonymous so maybe it would have been difficult to write about in any detail without compromising someone? 5mo
