Devil's Highway: A True Story | Luis Alberto Urrea

After finishing All the Pretty Horses, I just couldn‘t jump back into my current audio so I went looking for something else in my available listens. This story of a group of men who attempted to walk across the border from Mexico to the U.S. in 2001 seemed a perfect complement to the story I had just finished. It is a harrowing story of persistence, death, and the situation at the border in the early 2000s.

Daisey @Lola Good to know! I really enjoyed the style of the book so I may need to check out another by him at some point. 6mo

I enjoyed this book, but I can‘t help comparing it to Gut, which I also listened to recently. This one was more humorous with diversions that varied the topic more, and it seemed to mostly skip the small intestine. I felt Gut was more focused on the actual function of the entire human digestive system.

I listened to much of the book on the drive to my house yesterday from visiting my family with my pets looking very ready to go home.

Daisey @Crazeedi It was fascinating, and I have others of hers on my someday TBR. 6mo
JeanaRae I've read Stiff and currently reading Bonk. I love her work! 6mo
Dolly I found this book rather incomplete too and felt the same way after reading Stiff by Roach. I liked Working Stiff by Melinek much better. 6mo

#audiobookchallenge #24in48

I almost exclusively use my various library accounts for Audiobooks. The ones I own either come from #audiobooksync every year and are stored on Overdrive app, or if I do buy them, I use Libro.fm. I am anti-amazon.

I have been introduced to Chirp from bookBub but I haven‘t used it yet. And I will use iBooks or the text to speech function when necessary.

Also want to give a shout out to the TBBS system. ❤️❤️❤️

LibrarianRyan Tagged is the book I am currently listening to on Hoopla. 6mo

I finished listening to this while weed-eating under fence and taking an evening walk. I like Van Gogh‘s art, but I knew very little about his life. This book was incredibly interesting to me, but also sadder and heavier than I expected. There is a decent amount of discussion of prostitutes, syphilis, mental illness, and suicide. The story of the brothers‘ relationship was fascinating and wonderful.

Daisey This is also my #audiowalk no filter selfie for this week‘s #BFC photo challenge. #BFCr2 @wanderinglynn

Finally, those are our farm fields drying out from flooding behind me, and if you look very closely to the left and under the audiobook screenshot, you can see one of the holes in the levee. #BooksontheFarm

Butterflyamore This is one of my favorites! I love Vincent Van Gogh‘s art. This book was so beautifully written. It felt like the author was painting her own portrait with words. If you are interested, Loving Vincent is a great movie to watch and the entire thing is animated through the art of Van Gogh! 6mo
wanderinglynn Beautiful! ❤️ a lovely photo! Thanks for sharing! 6mo

Daisey @britt_brooke Thanks! It was longer than I expected, but it really was fascinating as someone who knew so little. 6mo
Daisey @Butterflyamore I agree that the author did a lovely job with her description. Thanks for the movie recommendation; I‘ll have to look it up. 6mo

Yesterday I finished up my listen of Sourdough as a #reread for #LitsyBookClub and enjoyed this slightly crazy but fun story just as much as the first time.

Then I started listening to Vincent & Theo, an #audiobook I‘ve been looking forward to from #AudiobookSync this summer.

I listened while cleaning out tractors and checking what fields and roads look like as the flood water continues to recede. #BooksontheFarm

Daisey Free downloads available this week through Overdrive from https://www.audiobooksync.com, including Vincent and Theo & 6mo
BarbaraBB Great. Is it about the Van Gogh brothers? 6mo
Daisey @BarbaraBB Yes, it is about the Van Gogh brothers. I‘m not very far yet, but from what I‘ve seen about it, it relies heavily on the letters Vincent wrote to Theo as source material. 6mo
BarbaraBB Heavy stuff thus! Interesting though! 6mo

4.5 ⭐️ - loved it 🙌🏻

I listened to this via the #audiobooksync program. I was beginning to think I just can‘t enjoy YA - most of the choices so far have been meh 🤷🏻‍♀️ to me.

But THIS knocked it outta the park ⚾️!
I hope & pray there are kids like Walt, Noah, & Sam in every town today - kids who still believe in love, kindness, respect, hard work, & friendship & family.
And I hope we‘re building them a better ending than these kids get 😔

Although I could see this classified as either, I would consider it slightly more #middlegrade than #YA and am reviewing as such. For that audience, I think it is a wonderful family story and description of the experiences of East Germans soon after the building of the Berlin Wall. It clearly describes the difficulty and danger without ever being too graphic.

One note about the audio narration in the comments.👇

#AudiobookSync #audiobook

Daisey One thing that annoyed me a bit about the narration was that specifically the East German guards‘ voices were read with an accent. All the characters are German, so why were just these characters specifically read that way? It may be just my perception, but it seemed to possibly be a part of their negative portrayal. (edited) 7mo
marleed That‘s a really interesting point. I wonder if I would have picked up on it - I hope so! 7mo
Daisey @marleed I consciously realized it when one of them turned out to be a former classmate and friend of the brother. It seemed their voices should be similar. 7mo

I‘ve had this book on my TBR for a while and am enjoying the audio I downloaded through #audiobookSync. I don‘t know of many #middlegrade or #YA books with stories of the impact of the Berlin Wall, so I‘m glad it‘s also in my class library.

Today was another rainy day, but I got out for walk this afternoon to make sure I met my step goal for the first day of this round of the #BookFitnessChallenge.

I can‘t find this in the Litsy database, but it‘s available for free download yet tonight through https://www.audiobooksync.com. I started listening this afternoon when I got home and continued straight through to the end. It‘s told in documentary play format and includes stories of people on the Deepwater Horizon oil drilling rig that exploded in 2010, as well as their families and others impacted by the disaster.

Kathrin Sounds interesting. I don‘t know that platform at all. 8mo
Daisey @Kathrin It‘s a program I first saw promoted as a way to get audiobooks to teens through the summer, but it‘s available to anyone in the U.S. and sometimes internationally. There are two audiobooks available for download through Overdrive each week through the end of July. 8mo
Kathrin @Daisey I have deleted the OverDrive app when I switched over to Libby. So I guess I put it back on. 🤪 8mo
Daisey @Kathrin This program is the only reason I‘ve kept Overdrive. 8mo
